..."may he/she rest in peace". I've thought about it for a minute or two, and I think it's a bit of a paradox. Anyway you see it from time to time - someone dies, like Evel Knievel, and known athiests say the afore mentioned phrase. So, are they just not thinking about it? Just trying to be cordial? I mean c'mon now if all there is, is total oblivion and complete nonexistence, what's all this resting in peace crap? THINK before you speak, eh? A little consistency is always appreciated. Otherwise confusion starts to mount.

Well its like being an Atheist and having children. You'll probably still buy a Christmas tree and some presents for the kids, just so they dont feel left out. Then when they're old enough to understand, you can turn the holiday into something else.

So when a Buddhist says "God bless you" your head explodes?

Haha, quoted for truth and funniness.

Plus, isn't oblivion resting in peace? If you think about it...:mischief:

Chill, its just a phrase, just like saying god damnit and bless you, its just a polite thing to do and have you ever thought that words werent invented by God? We have all kinds of phrases like that.

Peace? What the hell do you think eternal nothingness is!

I suppose it's become ingrained enough in our collective vocabulary that it's also a courtesy/respect/whatever you want it to be.

May he rest in peace. ;)

I say it because I'm expressing my heartfelt concern that the deceased person remains as such instead of reemerging as a zombie or some sort of futuristic cyber-lich bent on murdering and plundering.

Jesus Christ, go to hell.

I do think people should consider they're language carefully. For example when someone sneezes I say "bless you" rather than "God bless you". Personally I think it's a nicer sentiment. I'm not hoping God blesses them, I am giving them a blessing from my own heart. :)

Can you explain how there could be an afterlife if there is no God of any sort?
The two beliefs don't necessarily have any relation to each other.

The world exists with no God, the next world could just as easily exist without Big Poppa as well.

because saying rest in peace is much more polite than saying

"enjoy being thrown into the ground and eaten by worms as your body slowly decomposes which of course will be completely irrelevant to you because you can neither feel it nor care because you have undergone brain death"

Can you explain how there could be an afterlife if there is no God of any sort?

not that i as an atheist subscribe to it, but theoretically if there can be life without a god there can be an afterlife without a god(once again i disagree with this)

I was thinking of you when I made that post, Narziboo
