Questions about The BUG Mod

Are they replacement scripts for the factory maps?

They are new maps created by other community members here at CFC. We like them and use them a lot, so we packaged them up with BUG. You can find information about each by searching the forums for their names.

Excuse me but where do I download BULL? I downloaded 4.1 but I can not find the DLL any where.

Although I have played every version of CIV from I through BTS, I'm a newbie with regard to MODs.

Last week I patched up to 3.19 then discovered the unofficial 3.19 patch which I installed 3 days ago. Both installed just as advertised and worked just fine.

Then I discovered BUG/BAT/BULL/PIG/BBAI/Blue Marble and lots of other interesting stuff. Holy Spit, Batman!

I did some research at the sourceforge mediawike for CIV4BUG. There I read that BAT includes BUG and BULL and that BULL includes the 3.19 unofficial patch and something there includes Blue Marble or parts thereof. So......, downloaded and installed BAT 2.0 That also went smoothly.

But today, I have read several hundred (maybe thousands) of posts on at least a dozen threads and now am far more confused than before I started.

After reading posts 975 & 976 above, I downloaded and installed BUG v4.1 - successfully as far as I can tell.

Which brings me to several questions:

1. Do I now have all of the latest and greatest available features of BUG, BAT and BULL. If not, what do I need to do to get them?

2. Same question re: Blue Marble.

3. If I download and install BBAI will I loose any of the features of the BUG/BAT/BULL MODs?

4. Same question re: PIG.

5. How about LoR or RoM and others?

BAT 2.0 includes BUG 4.0. It can be difficult for end-users to stay current on all the latest features when mods like BAT package other mods (BUG, BULL, VD, parts of BlueMarble) that are also progressing. While you can upgrade BAT to BUG 4.1 by copying over the files from BUG's Assets folder over BAT's Assets folder, sometimes problems may arise. I think 4.1 should be okay, though.

I strive to keep BUG backward compatible. You can always use the older saved games with a new version of BUG, and you can always use your old settings files as well.

1. Do I now have all of the latest and greatest available features of BUG, BAT and BULL. If not, what do I need to do to get them?

If you copied the new BUG files over BAT, yes.

2. Same question re: Blue Marble.

BAT includes only some if BlueMarble, and BM hasn't been upgraded since BAT's 2.0 release.

3. If I download and install BBAI will I loose any of the features of the BUG/BAT/BULL MODs?

You can copy the BBAI CvGameCoreDLL.dll file into BAT's Assets folder, but you'll lose BULL (extra hover text information). BBAI includes the UP, and jdog and I are hoping to be able to release a BULL/BBAI merge. C++ merges are more difficult, especially since both include the UP.

4. Same question re: PIG.

PIG includes both a DLL and BUG and some XML, so it will be harder to merge with BAT. You would definitely need some logic and computer skills to merge them yourself. You might be better off merging VD with PIG and installing BM separately.

5. How about LoR or RoM and others?

These are like PIG in that they are more complex mods that alter gameplay, graphics, and the interface. I believe both include BUG (4.0?), but upgrading them to BUG 4.1 would require some Python (programming) knowledge. I think they upgrade BUG as new versions are released pretty quickly, though.

EmperorFool:

Thank you for your kind and quick reply. I think I will wait for you and jdog to merge BBAI/BULL rather than further confuse myself along those lines.

Am I correct in thinking that I can install PIG, LoR, &/or RoM and let them use their own included "BUG" without damaging or losing the BUG v4.1 files that I have already installed?

I don't know how I think I can keep up with the MODs - I can't even keep up with the initials and acronyms! In that vein, with respect to the MODs, what are VD & UP?

Mods installed into their own folders in the Mods folder will never interfere with each other. Anything installed in the CustomAssets (BUG's single-player install method) can interfere. If they mess with a mod, go to the mod's folder and edit its INI file. Change NoCustomAssets to 1.

What are VD & UP?

VD: Varietas Delectat, a mod that adds ethnic building and unit artwork and nicer leaderheads.

UP: Unofficial Patch, a mod that fixes several bugs from the game and official patches.

Advanced Combat Odds texts are hard corded into CvGameTextMgr.cpp.
Do you have a plan to extract them to XML files as same as original ACO?

BULL has an older version of ACO still. Thank you for the reminder to upgrade to the latest version.

In BULL, what exactly is the Map finder? What purpose does it serve?

In BULL, what exactly is the Map finder? What purpose does it serve?

It requires BUG to drive the UI and BULL to perform the map regeneration. It adds two functions: ALT + G to regenerate the map once and CTRL + ALT + G to start MapFinder which regenerates maps continuously, saving those that match rules you've set up with the separate HOF utility program.

For example, you could find maps and starting locations that have 2 Gems, riverside Corn, and Marble with at least 5 Forests and no Desert tiles. You can set up all sort of rules and have multiple rule sets checked at once to allow many types of maps to be generated.

All that BULL really does is expose CvGame::regenerateMap() and add CvGame::canRegenerateMap(). BUG and the HOF MapFinder program do the rest.

Sorry, I missed this post. I'm still working on the BUG 4.1.1 fix release and then will tackle BULL 1.0. At this point using SVN (see the DLL Features thread) is the only way to get an older version of it.

BTS 3.19 w/ UP 3.19 : BAT 2.0 & BUG 4.1 : RoM 2.8beta

Alerts show only repeated lines of: "BugOptions - failed writing INI file '%s'

Tried making changes on the Alerts Tab of BugOptions - no change.

1. What did I do wrong?

2. How do I fix it?

Just getting back into things after being away for months. Best I can tell I left off with BUG 3.6 and BTS 3.17. Updated to BTS 3.19 and BUG 4.1 and I noticed the BUG settings have all moved into a userSettings folder. Somehow I still have the old INIs under the root of the <BUG Mod> folder. Can these files safely be deleted? I also copied my <CustomDomAdv.txt> over to the new folder under userSettings as well. Is that ok to do?

Just reading up on BULL. Does it work with the official 3.19 patch yet? If so, where does one download?

Yes, but if you want to keep your old settings you can copy them into the new UserSettings folder first. Otherwise, once you remove the old INI files BUG will create new ones from scratch with default settings.

I also copied my <CustomDomAdv.txt> over to the new folder under userSettings as well. Is that ok to do?

Yes. It goes into the "UserSettings/CustDomAdv" folder. Then you can delete the old one.

It requires 3.19, but right now you can only access a development version from SVN. A downloadable ZIP is on the way and eventually an EXE installer. There is also BUFFY which is BUG + BULL + HOF stuff so you can submit HOF/XOTM games. It uses BUG 4.0 right now, but we're working on a new release.

Hi I have downloaded BUGMod4.1 and exe. It seems to put a folder in my Mydocuments/Beyond the sword fosler, I am not sure what else it does. However the Mod does not operate and there is no option to load it ingame.

I tried entering mod = BUg Mod (name of folder) and mod = BuG Mod 4.1 (What it says in instalation instruction) in the civilaztion, ini file in MD/BTS folder, mod does not get activated, warning about not loading mod on startup.

Not sure what to do.
I play FFH regualrly, will that cause a problem as I expect I wont want to use BUG with FFH.

Thanks

FFH is installed in its own folder in the Mods folder so you should install BUG as a mod as well. Did you double-click the EXE to install BUG? You only need the EXE installer, not the ZIP.

When you double-click the installer, you'll be asked which type of installation to do. Select Multi-Player and click next. It sounds like you just haven't launched the installer yet.

Selecting the multiplayer option appears to have done it. No idea why. Thanls for the help.

It didn't seem you had done the Single-Player installation method before, but if you had it would load automatically and there'd be no way to load it manually. If you have any trouble with FFH, rename your My Games / BTS / CustomAssets folder to remove the SP version of BUG.

I have run BtS 3.19 and BUG 3.6 (successfully, until now - see below) and would obviously like to move up to the latest version of BUG. But how should I do this ? (a) simply download 4.1 and hope that it will install itself over what's already there, (b) do a complete reload, repatch, and then download 4.1, or (c) something between these two ?
Also, the initial screen shows the "Blue Marble" logo, but I don't remember downloading this and searching finds no files, folders, or other references to Blue Marble. Is it built solidly into BUG ? Could it be connected with a recent problem ? - on reaching 1040AD in the game, all buildings disappear from the panel and up come messages "You cannot continue building xxxxx in xxxx". Total frustration, abandon aborted game, and (cursing foully) delete the dratted thing. If there is a potential link between Blue Marble and this horrible problem, how can I get rid of Blue Marble ? Assuming I can, and do, get BUG 4.1, will this still happen ? Is Blue Marble Gold safer ? Even if this is so, does it come built solidly into 4.1 or is it optional ? In any case I don't really want it as I find eye-candy superfluous: I'd be quite happy with, for example, 2-D cardboard sprites instead of 3-D animated figures.
By the way, I always play alone, at Normal speed and Emperor level, and never play scenarios or other mods. I like the basic Civ4, with the additional informational displays of BUG.

Safest path is to use BUG's uninstaller which is installed along with BUG. If you opted to install the program group when installing BUG, it will be in that group. If you used the single-player install method, it will be in "My Games/BTS/BUG Mod". If you used the multiplayer install method, it will be in "Programs/BTS/Mods/BUG Mod 3.6".

No. BAT 1.2 includes both BUG and BlueMarble, but BUG does not include BlueMarble itself. You either installed BAT or BM or some other mod that has it. I don't see how BM could cause any game-related problems as it is entirely graphical.

Could it be connected with a recent problem ? - on reaching 1040AD in the game, all buildings disappear from the panel and up come messages "You cannot continue building xxxxx in xxxx".

A screenshot would really help here, but it sounds like what happens when a rival completes a wonder while you're still building it. I don't see how BUG could cause this problem either. Can you post a saved game where this occurs?

By the way, I always play alone, at Normal speed and Emperor level.

Same here except I play Epic because I do like to trounce the AIs once I get a tech lead.
