Did you know that changing the science/lux % changes the amount of income from cities, not just the income distribution? This is because science buildings (Library/University/Research Lab) only increase the beakers allocated to science, and the tax buildings (Market Place/Bank/Stock Market) only increase the beakers not allocated to science or lux. This also means that these buildings might be useless to you. I.e. If your science/lux always add up to 100% then you won't gain any extra beakers from the Market Place/Bank/Stock Market, so are paying for their upkeep for nothing!

That was kinda my point :p

But you do get culture from the scientific buildings, and marketplaces improve the value of luxuries...

Ah, but do you need culture? The answer is, it depends what victory condition you're aiming for. It's only recently that I've stopped myself from building every building as it becomes available, without thinking "Do I need that building? Will the benefits of building it outweigh the cost to build/maintain it?". In this months GOTM we were a scientific Civ, and I was going for Space Race, so wanting high science rate. For a change I actually avoided the religious buildings, only building a temple in the largest of my citys for happiness (market place wasn't enough). It made a real difference to the amount of money I could put into science! Admittedly I still built lots of banks/stock exchanges, but I had Smith's Trading, so it wasn't costing me :).

The main purpose of the marketplace is to generate happiness. Once you have access to several luxuries, it's a very high priority even if your tax rate is 0%, because it lets you drop entertainment to 0% and thus increase research, and/or increase the size of your cities before they go into sivil disorder, and/or let your cities celebrate We Love The King Day, which makes them more productive.

The bank and the stock market are indeed of limited utility, and I rarely build them.

Err, I don't know what level you are playing, but to beat the level I play, banks and stock exchanges are a must. Marketplaces are very important for the increase in income, and it is often cheaper to buy a tech than to research it.

[ptw]

In PTW, there is an option to "Fortify all".
If you have a spearman that has used up all of its movement points, and a Warrior which has full movement left, and you click "fortify all", does this fortify the Spearman as well (on that turn) ?

Edit: Thanks Annares :)

Gainy Bo,

AFAIK you don't get a fortify bonus unless that unit has all of it's movement left, so no, they won't have a fortify bonus.

Imagine moving a spear 2 tiles along a road to a city and then fortifying it. That spear will not have fortify bonus that round. Moving a spear 2 tiles along railroad to a city and fortifying it will give the fortify bonus.

Eg, just build mines, or just build roads?

In ptw you can automate your workers and order them to connect cities and such. Check out the 'advanced worker buttons'.

Does anyone know of a source of CIV3 related acronyms other than in the FAQ? There are many I see here that are not on the FAQ. Two that I can think of just off the top of my head: MPs and CFC.

For example, near the beginning of this thread, there is a question about a guy who's civ starts suffering after he switches to republic. Someone mentions you get 2MPs in despot, but none in republic. I have no idea what that means.

MP is Military Police

I doubt anyone thought to put CFC anywhere. You're going to kick yourself. It's Civilization Fanatics Center :).

Being ex-military, that's what I immediately thought of when I saw MP, but wasn't sure.

Yep, kicking myself now.

If you look at the civilopedia entries for the different government types it will tell you the maximum number of MPs per city. Some government types have 0 (I.e. The Republic and Democracy).

I have been looking and looking (I wish the search function was working:( ) but I haven't been able to find anything about setting up a four turn settler factory.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Bugs

Once again, I know I've seen it but can't find it.

How do you take screenshots?

Assuming you're planning on posting these screenshots in one of the forums (probably the GOTM ones, right :)), don't forget to scale/crop them so they are not too wide, otherwise your whole post will be really wide. cracker recommends 800 pixel max width on the GOTM forums, I don't know if there is a recommendation for any of the others.

Move a stack of units

I could swear I saw somewhere a keyboard shortcut that allows you to move a stack of units on one square all to another square as a stack. The stack will only move as fast as its slowest moving unit.

I've checked some keyboard charts and haven't seen it. Of course, I could just be imagining this or simply overlooking it. BTW, this is for plane ole CivIII, not PTW.
