When in an army, do spearmen/pikemen defend and archers shoot at the 'rush' and swordmen fight, as a team. Or is it all one to one, one at a time?

Wondering how to build a good army, whom to place in it.

The army will act as one single unit with the defense of the highest defender and the offense of the highest offender, the life of all hitpoints of the units combined, and the speed of the slowest unit +1.

I would suggest you specialize your armies, so if you need an army to defend your stack of doom in enemy terrain, fill it completely with your most advanced defenders.

More often you will not need a defensive army, so you should probably fill it with your most advanced offensive units. Make it all the same units, and preferably fast moving ones. An army of cavalierly has a movement of 4.

I would put in a superior unit in later, when you can add a 4th unit. So if I had a Knight army of 3 and got cavs, I would add a cav as the 4th.

If I had say a sword army and got to add a 4th and now had MDI or Knights, that is what I would add.

This is because the best unit will go up to fight first. I would not add a 4th unit that was slower than the ones already in the army though.

I'm a newbie, and I have a newbie question: What is "Future Tech?" The game has researched it all the way to 9 so far on one of my maps (on Chieftain level, of course) but I haven't been offered any improvements for it.

They give a very small bonus to your final game score but offer no in-game benefits. I suggest you save the cash by switching off research and use it for something else.

BTW it probably indicates that you are ready to play on Warlord level! ;)

Thanks much, Tone! Good advice... and I was thinking about making that step anyhoo...

i am having trouble usind the editor. i can not access anthing below a certain point for example on scenarios page i can't hit the button apply, etc...help me please

I guess you are talking about when you have the scenario properties page open. I would check my desktop settings. Make it 1024 or higher and you won't have any issues, I suspect.

Hey, I want to make my own scenario, but I don't know how. I hear people talk about the scenario editor but I don't know where it is how to get it. I have Civ III, Gold Edition, but if you can't do it with that I have normal Civ III.

I do not recall what versions come with Gold, but it will have an editor for each version that comes with it.

You can make a map and it can be as simple as just generating the map and placing civs. It can be as complex as creating your own rules and units or anything in between.

The editor will have a custom tool to have it be a custom map with or without custom rules.

You can use the set player start location to have them start where you want. You can change the start location to force it to use any civ allowed.

Really you can do as much as you want. I expect that there are some details on the process in the creation forum.

I almost never use catapults, trebs, artys or any sort of land bombardment unit. Is that extremely crippling, minimally crippling, or make no difference at all (ie. the bonuses are balanced by the fact that they, too, will be making me lose more gold to units.)

If I should build more artillery type units during war, then maybe that will help me.

@sercer88 - you will want to learn to use artillery & bombardment units. In the early game (catapults), you'll have to take tons of them along to feel like you're doing any damage, but learning to use them will improve your kill-to-loss ratio considerably. Use the artillery to bombard until the defenders are red-lined, then send in troops to make the kill.

@sercer88: Personally, I play most of my games without any artillery units because they move too slowly. Stick with E. War Chariots, Horsemen, Knights, Cavalry, if necesary. (Most games on levels 1-5 can be won with only horsemen!)

However, on the higher game levels, you may need the catapults+ to whittle down the AI's, especially if they are way ahead on techs. (Viz. Have more powerful defensive units.) I avoid building defensive units like the plague. :)

As previously stated, you don't *have* to use arty/bombard units. But it does help.

Especially after you have flight, and can build bombers. Then you get striking range into the enemy AI territory, and it helps greatly to bombard the roads and slow down their defensive response. Not to mention whittling away any SoD that comes into your territory.

Arty/Radar arty have a range of 2. Any arty unit below that has a range of 1. Bombers have a range of 10. That's quite a bit farther striking distance, and a lot more turns of whittling down the SoD that's in your territory.

So yes, you can win without bombard units. But it's a lot easier to win with them.

Arty also help when you are fighting wars in representative government as fewer loses delays or even averts war weariness. Using fast units, as EMan has already recommended, also helps in this respect.

Yeah, I already use bombers. In fact, usually whenever I get them and am at war, after about 10 turns, their whole infrastructure has gone to pot from my bombing runs. But, artillery, I've not yet found a consistently good use for them (esp. the earlier types.)

Thamk you so very much. Yes that was it. And yes i feel like a noob. But thank you answering my post.

So, I've got 30 posts (now 31.) How do I change my icon/ what's underneath it/ what goes underneath each on of my posts.

Go to your UserCP and click Edit Profile. This is where you can make your own Custom Title. Then click on Edit Avatar, and you can upload your own avatar.

It might take a while for the database to catch up tho. Shouldn't be longer than an hour however. So if you don't have those options right away, give it a little bit of time.

I just read in another thread that roads don't need to be built to mines... good to know.
So my question is, are all irrigated tiles considered "improved," being farmed, or is it overkill?
And, is it a good idea to automate workers at any time of the game?
