Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Thanks. I should clarify that I bought Civilization Chronicles with has all the versions (1-4), so is just a matter of picking what version is the best to start with. Based on what little I know so far, I am leaning for Civ III, but maybe 1-2 might be a better choice to learn the concepts. What I want to avoid is picking the wrong version and find out it has a steep learning curve (great game, but hard for newbies to learn). I am sure all versions are cool, but I want to find the best version for a newbie to learn the concepts.

Thank you Kumquat and Lord Emsworth :)

more questions:

1)how can I see hostile units as red dots on the mini map?

2)is there a formula to determine at what exact price the AI will capitulate when haggling? I think he will sell it at around 89-91% of his asking price, but it gets more complicated in package deals like if he also asks for a world map and maybe luxuries.

thanks

I started out with the basic or Vanilla version of Civilization 3, and then moved to the Complete version, which includes Play the World and Conquests, and I have the Civilization Chronicles. I also have Civilization IV, but regard it as a poorer game than Civilization 3. I would recommend Civ3 Complete for the following reasons:

Most complete version of the game, with much lower computer requirements than Civilization 4.

Has a good range of built-in scenarios that come with the game.

Is not that hard to modify if you wish.

The is a very large community that is actively involved in the game, as demonstrated by the forum.

My personal view is that it is the best game of the set. It has its problems, but I regard it as vastly superior to Civilization IV.

I would play Civ 3 Complete. The learning curve is ~3-4 days.

Sadly, no.:(

The mini-map is too small for displaying those units, or else you would have a red mini-map.

Hi again guys

Have been having problems with setting up embassies. Have writing and espionage. So far I have mainly been excepting AI's requests to set up embassies but can't figure out how to set up my own. Can someone talk me through how to open up the page to set them up.

thanks

If you have Conquests, then click on the little E symbol bottom right.

If you don't, then IIRC you can right-click on your capital tile to get the 'Conduct Espionage' option. This will allow you to build embassies.

BTW you don't actually need Espionage; only writing is a required tech.

I found it rather difficult to figure out the embassies when I went from vanilla to Complete.

In Vanilla, double clicking the star on your capital got you to a straightforward screen where you picked the Civ you wanted and gave what it would cost. Easy-peasy for technopeasants to do.

It took me forever to discover the use of the Espionage button for embassies and then another millennium to find all the buttons you have to click to get a simple embassy up and running.

For ronanp:

click on the little e on the lower right status box
--->
click on the Civ ------- upper left starts
click on "build Embassy" -------- top centre
Click on "safe....." -------- Lower right
Click on execute. ------- Lowest right

thanks guys. Had been clicking on their captiols trying to do it never thought of clicking on my own captiol.

Sorted now.

Oh good!

My work here is finished...

A few questions on AI Respawn:
How exactly does AI Respawn work?
Is it when all of the AI cities are taken?
Is it different if you've killed off all of a civs units?
Does it have to respawn in the fog?
If it's on, is there any way to prevent an AI from respawning?
Does it automatically get all of its starting units?

Aabraxan, my understanding along with what I have seen.

"How exactly does AI Respawn work?"

If respawn is enabled and the civ is eliminated per the message, then a respawn will occur.

"Is it when all of the AI cities are taken?"

Yes and no settlers.

"Is it different if you've killed off all of a civs units?"

Only towns and settlers matter. The remaining units are disbanded.

"Does it have to respawn in the fog?"

It has to be in a legit place for a town. I also recall them always being outside of culture borders, unlike a settler.

"If it's on, is there any way to prevent an AI from respawning?"

No, other than all land is under someones borders.

"Does it automatically get all of its starting units?"

Yes.

Aabra. I knew that there was a minimum distance that the AI had to be from any rival unit in order to respawn but I couldn't remember the exact details. I did know that this had come up recently with Padma providing info from a firaxis source.

Here's the link to that post.

I was wondering about the same issue of respawning AI, as I have never enabled it. Thanks very much for the posts.

hi all again

Started new game last night and have reached around 1200, I think I have played it out really well so far. Have god strech of land with well placed cities. With pleanty of resouces and have a well placed Forbidion Place. I am no chiefdom and will probably move up after this game, Still learning some of the new bells and whistles on civ 3.

The other civs have been pestering me alot to share maps, I have sent out a boat to map the coastlines so have way better maps then anyone else. I am also the only civ in contact with everyone else. To my mind there is no reason for me to share my maps as I gain nothing and they get to see loads of land that has yet to be developed, which I may send off boats with settlers to develop myself.

Am I missing somthing or am I right to put off sharing maps till I have to keep someone sweet?

Thanks

Being in contact with civs that some others do not know, is a good thing. Maps are more useful to the AI as they know what is on a given tile, but may not know how to get to it.

I hold off sharing maps as long as possible, unless I have a need to find out where one of the AI civilizations is. It is possible to trade other things like tech advances, resources, and money to get maps, especially if you have a big lead in technology. I start sharing if I get a big tech lead, and need to know where some of the more advanced resources are.

The AI already knows the map, so you might as well sell them. In fact there is a exploit where you sell your maps every turn to everyone to suck up any spare cash. Forbidden in some competitive games.

That was a Vanilla loophole pretty much closed up in C3C, correct?
