You can do Conquest with little razing if your culture isn't high, since the AI builds cities CxxxxC and captured cities lose their culture, but it is difficult. Hmmm there's a variant for ya, a no-raze Conquest:)

Hi all,

My first newbie question!!

I keep seeing the term "whipping" to increase production. What is this?

I am guessing that it is where you change production in a city to give more shields but less food (leaving a shortage) and thus you lose a pop.

Is this correct or am I way off the mark here?

Thanks in advance

"Whipping" is rushing production by using the very lives of your citizens. Some government types, like Republic and Democracy, allow you to rush production by paying gold for it. Others, like Despotism and Communism, throw more bodies at the problem, until it is finished.

Obviously, if you "use the whip" to get more production out of people, they become very unhappy. Thus, for every citizen unit burned up by the whip, you get 20 turns of unhappiness.

Edit, also, IIRC, each population point is worth 20 shields. And you can never whip more than 50% of your current pop.

(I may have some details wrong here, but I'm sure I will be corrected if I do! )

@Padma - regarding war-weariness - is there any reason to change out of Monarchy into Communism? I'm playing a Religious civ atm so won't get too much anarchy if I do.

In Communism you won't suffer from the effects of WW, so go ahead. Only Republic and Dem suffer from this.

Now, you will still accumulate the points for it, so be wary of that if you decide to switch to Rep/Dem.

Wait, its been a while since I've played unmodded civ. If this is the case than what are police stations for?

Police Stations give reduced corruption, but a pricey way to do it at 2gpt maintenance and a shield cost of 160, plus they require an optional tech, Communism. I rarely build them.

Rare is a good word.........But, Police Stations are useful in (HOF) Histographic Victories, when you want to maximize People Happiness and thus score! :)

So communism tech provides an improvement that won't work in communism... interesting....

Is it possible for units in armies to create a leader?

In my current game, I got a MGL, built an army and filled it with 3 veteran units, as I wanted to keep my elite units "free" to try and get another MGL.

After a combat with the army, one of the units got promoted to elite. Now, the other two probably won't have a big chance on getting promoted (as I think the army always uses the strongest unit first, and they're all the same kind), but is it possible for the elite unit to get "promoted" and give me a MGL? And are the odds the same as for "normal" elite units?

Are the infantry attacking or defending? If the Samuri are defending and fortified with other bonuses (For defensive bonuses, check out the Civilopedia and look under game concepts, then defender combat bonuses.), then they'll have a hard time.

Here's some articles dealing with military strategy and tactics: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/strategy/military_strategy_tactics

Hope this helps!

my rule of thumb is don't attack with a unit that has a larger defense rating than attack rating, unless it is really unbalanced (like infantry vs. reg spearman). ie, use cavalry instead of infantry. For one, samurai can't run away from cavs, and for two, once the samurai is dead, you may be able to move the hurt cavalry back to its reinforcments and not give them a chance to pick off the wounded.

Samurai are particularly frustrating. I've had one take down a modern armor in a "fair" fight, both full health veterens. My suggestion: if you plan on bringing in infantry (to ANY fight, really), bring lots and lots of artillery too, and bomb the little pricks into submission!

AI surely has "random" coificent, when troops fighting each other, a little bit in their favor dont they?:D I've played too much games where opponents 3 defence cavarly is killing of my 12 attack marine:D:D:D And yes my marine is attacking his cavalry:) so its 12 vs 3*terrain bonus. Or 3 swordsmans killing off 3 fortified spearmans in 7 size city(+50% more def bonus right?) - no problemo:D

Also fun to see how spearmans with 2 def(fortified so 3 def, city bonus so about 4-5 def are killing off 16(?) attack tanks;D Its even funnier when you think how it would be possible for a dude with shield and spear, nearly no armor to kill heavily armored tank who shoots rockets;D

P.S. Please dont give me that you got unlucky and he got lucky... Thats happening all the time. I've been playing civ now for a month or so each day=] Really got addicted=]]]
