Well, if I wanted a fast conquest game, I wouldn't play as Rome ;) Or Persia, or Greece, or Sumeria...

But as he said, that is personal preference - me, I like using the UU's of a civ if I'm going to play them. If I were playing Zulu, for instance, I woudl build Impi's and horse and take over the world.

If I were playing Aztecs, I would make jags's and attack really early.

If I were playing Persia, I would send my workers out to build roads to the other civs while building an army of immortals and go out and kick some ass.

If I were playing on Sid, I would basically turtle up and hope I didn't die too fast ;)

In C3C, can MGL's rush the Palace?

Swordsmen are popular and Legionaries are even stronger for the same price.

I just don't understand this. Why do so many people like the Legionary? It is NOT better than a swordsman. 3.2.1 vs. 3.3.1? Hmm, sitll just 3 pts of attack. Gallic Swordsman >>>>> Immortal >>> Legionary.

So your saying that Horsemen are the strongest warriors?

And does building a city over a tech, make the tech last longer?

Be persia and make a force of immortals.

The spearmen you face dont really stand a chance.

Basically, if you have a legionaries, you just build those for about an age and a half. You don't need spears, pikes, med infantry or knights - just legionnary after legionary. No need for combined arms - just huge stacks.

They die on pikes, but they are cheaper then pikes. Med Inf can beat them up, but then, they can beat up med inf - and they are cheaper.

But really - every civ has a UU that gives it an advantage. You just have to use it correctly, is all. Even the H'wacha, or however it is pronounced...

Yup, must admit, on Sid Level you DO have to think about defensive values of units........'cos you KNOW the AI is gonna attack......REEEEEAL Soon!

I did manage to survive a game or two with just Egyptian War Chariots on a tiny Archipelago........But, I think your idea of a Turtle Unit......Say 0.6.0 for 20 Shields would help a whole lot! ;)
(Yeah for 20 shields......I figured you couldn't expect it to be able to move anywhere....it would be stuck in the city! )

P.s. There's a whole thread somewhere (Call in the Archivist) where people discuss the merits of Swordsmen v Horsemen......And then vote on their preference.

Greetings, all.

I started a game the other day with the goal of getting the spaceship made and blasting off this dump. 2 civs, counting mine; huge map; Pangean continent.

All proceeds well, except for the scarcity of strategic goods. There's one aluminum, one rubber, two iron... This planet is obviously pretty barren. I can handle scarcity. What I'm having a hard time with is the apparent total absence of urnaium! I can't find any! None! Nada! Squat! This puts a crimp in my spaceship plans, as I need it for fuel.

Two questions, then:

1) Am I correct in assuming that not all strategic resources appear on all maps? Could it be that the game has simply refused to make a uranium for me, and I am thus pooched?

2) If my fears are true, what can I do to add a uranium deposit in a convenient location? Is there a way to edit the map?

Thank you, oh wise ones.

Dan

All resources *normally* appear on the map. But, particularly with Conquests, occasionally it happens that one (or more) is missing. You should also be aware that the total number of resources is tiesd to the number of Civs in the game. So just you and one other Civ will severely reduce the number of resources available.

@Dark Alley Dan: Welcome to CFC. :band:   [party]

My understanding is that there is at least one supply of every resource pre-set (viz. Before the game starts) on EVERY Map. If you think about it, it would be rather unfair if you couldn't win by Spaceship because you couldn't build one!

However, I defer to Padma.......whose Post I have just read. (I never question the Oracles of Omaha! :) )

Is it possible that Uranium is located in an area of the Map (viz. Small Island) that has not yet been discovered? (Just because it's a Pangaea doesn't mean you don't have islands!!)

If you have already researched Satellites, then you can see the entire Map and my point is moot.

Also, Uranium could be found in one of the AI's City Squares. Have you performed a Ctrl-Shift-M on the Map Screen to easily view all resources? :)

So you are saying the Palace is a small wonder?
The Civilopedia lists The Palace as a City Improvement....BUT, for practical purposes it acts like a Small Wonder with a few quirks:

1. The Price of The Palace increases as your empire increases.

2. You can Re-build The Palace in any city that is not the current Capital. (Viz. Can't re-build it in the city that currently owns it.)

3. If you lose (by war) or abandon your Capital city, The Palace will show up in the city the program determines would be most favorable to you. (For more detail on this, see the War Academy Article: Free Palace Jump by DaveMcW. http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/strategy/palace_jump.php)

P.s. The Forbidden Palace is a Small Wonder, too. :)

You might want to consider using a Civilization other than the Iranians....Err, I mean Persians! Try the Russians, for example. :mischief:

;)

IIRC (and I'm too busy/lazy - take your choice - to dig up the appropriate thread(s) right now), there is a formula that the game uses to determine the spread of resources (Strategic and Luxury) on the map. When Conquests introduced new, additional resources, the formula wasn't changed. So if the formula says that say (grabbing a number out of thin air) 17% of the map will have resources assigned, the chance of any specific resource being assigned is less, because there are more resources to "choose" from.

I recall several threads/posts right after Conquests was released complaining about the new scarcity of Strategic Resources. "Missing Oil" was a particular concern, IIRC.

Thanks much for the input, folks, as well as the welcome.:goodjob:

I've done sattelites, and have looked everywhere, with special emphasis on forests and mountains. There is a chance, I suppose, the treacherous Japanese have it crammed under one of their rathole cities....I'll try the Ctrl-shift-M maneuver and see if it shows up. If they have it, and won't trade it (which seems likely) then I suppose we'll have to have a "chat"...

In the event I'm boned (as Padma has suggested I may be) is there a way to edit the map to place uranium somewhere? I have 23 hours into this danged thing and I'd like to see the investment of time pay off.

Cheers, and thanks again.

Dan

If iranium doesn't show up (:mischief:), perhaps you would post a copy of your current .SAV file?.......I, for one would like to see it. :)
