Going manual on workers is the best thing you can do to improve your game.

Once I realized I had to learn to do that, I started a new game (probably at Warlord  ) with no intention of winning...just practicing at managing workers. What a surprise it was to me that I actually DID win, and it was the best game I'd had thus far.

Once you get used to doing it, it becomes habit and not nearly so difficult or time-consuming as it appears at first glance. :)

First game; easiest level - won easily

Second game; Warlord level - went agonisingly to 2025 - lost

Third game; Regent level, conquest game, year 2120 (about) still going strong but nuclear in the picture now (theritory unknown to me) - so will I or will I not win? (7 players including myself - two eliminated thus far, one with a single city left, I have the second largest power there)

Realized several of my mistakes done in my third game already (like the flippin' workers) and improved quite a bit. Next game - next level! (with a total of 8 players).

Thanks for your help.

Thanks, Lord Emsworth.
1. In Vanilla there is always some corruption in the Capital, even in Democracy.

2. I am not sure but I believe it is counted as having distance 1 instead of 0, or something.

3. Five. (2c=1 ; 4c, 4c, 4.5c=2 ; 5c=5 ; 6c=6 ; 8c=7)
Distance is rouded down so 4.5c is treated the same as 4c.

4. 4f is rank 2; 6f is rank 6; 9f is rank 8
To get the rank of a city around the FP you count the number of cities which are closer the the Palace than the city is to the Forbidden Palace. (That is actually the reason why the remote palace exploit works)

So, cities centered around an FP ignore each other when it comes to determining their rank and, therefore, 3f, 4f, and 4.5f are all rank 2 since the above example has only 2c closer? Actually, there could be multiple cities at a distance of 2 or 2.5 (all within rank 1), I know.

For you or anyone else...a follow-up question:

On page 14 (1.4.4 The Forbidden Palace) of vulture's compilation/article Growth and Expansion in Civilization III he states:

"I don't know if anyone has determined whether this [calculating corruption based on distance to either palace or FP...not aware of the exploit] is only done for the total corruption, or whether it is done separately for distance and OCN corruption, which could lead to a city having its distance corruption based on the distance to the palace, but its OCN corruption based on the rank centered on the forbidden palace."

Question: OCN corruption is based solely on the total number of cities one has compared to the OCN in the editor for a given map size and difficulty level, correct? It has nothing to do with a city's rank, right?

BTW, do Expansionist civs get a higher OCN before incurring an OCN penalty? Do they get a lower Cd (distance corruption) penalty? I'm not finding any mention that they do. It seems they should.

You'd think so, but it's Commercial that gets the higher OCN. I wanna say it's 25% higher.
Commercial gets a higher OCN? I could see a lower Cd but a higher OCN? I'll keep looking for references to that. But since it does get a higher OCN one would assume the expansionist civ could get one, also (since it's obviously not a programming difficulty).

Maybe the expansionist civ could get an even higher OCN...kinda make up for the near irrelevence (I sometimes use scouts later in the game) of having scouts when the map is known and all the goody huts have been popped.

A workaround would be to have an improvement that's only available to certain civs that reduces corruption.

I have played for a long time but I can't believe I don't remember this  . How many beginning settlers does the AI get on Deity?

One extra, IOW it starts with two and you start with one. Sid get 2 extra and starts with 3.

On Poly we called that the Arrain deception. Backstab and double cross as long as you kill them before they can tell.

quick question

cows...

is it better to mine or irrigate tiles with cows? lately ive been mining them and its been working out well, but i only play on emperor...

Irrigate early. Food is power! You may reconsider that if you have twenty... ;)

Maximize shield output when you reach the thresholds: 6 and 12.

That depends on how many and where they are located. Say you have 3 cows and water. You probably want to irrigate 2 and mine one. Which one to mine is a function of the town that may share one of the cows.

If you have only one cow you are going to want to irrigated nearly always. You will want to consider coming back later to mine it after you have finsihed expanding, as long as you have your 24 food without irrigation.

a minor question:
how can I see the anarchy turns, when I get republic,
and click revolution?
I know someone metioned that right-lower corner show the number, but I can't find it.

In your Domestic Advisor "F1" screen, there's the domestic advisor. Keep clicking on the text, and it will cycle through.

Um... if it's 2120, then the game is already over. :crazyeye: The Histographic (time) victory occurs in 2050 AD. ;)

Have to be careful with that one though, if a rogue Galley/Caravel/Galleon turns up from another civ unexpectedly, it can ruin your trade for the rest of the game. Kill them quickly and ruthlessly, or wait and "play fair". ;)

Depends on a lot of factors... including, one that hasn't been mentioned yet, the terrain the Cow's on, and the Government you're in. For instance, if you've got a Cow on Plains, there's not much point in Mining it if you're still in Despotism. If there's no fresh water nearby, there'll be no option to Irrigate either. ;)
