I just re-read that article and don't see anything in it about this. He settled on the spot in all three cases. Interestingly, he missed moving towards a bonus food every time.

In the Iroquois example, this is understandable as there is no reason to know it is there. This is too bad because this is the one which needs it the most.

In the other two, he should have found it. In the German example he should start by moving the worker north. The Russian is even clearer. You have a scout, who should start by moving to the hill s-sw (my choice) or the mountain to the east. Either move reveals one of the wheats.

Romber,
Recently, I wondered something similar, so I started a thread in Strategy & Tactics called "How long do you let your settler wander?" (or something like that). It's a pretty short thread and the gist of the discussion was how much time to spend getting to a better locatio, generally. I've read Cracker's Opening Plays, but I don't recall seeing any specific advice on rivers. The thread that I just mentioned does contain some discussion of whether or not to move to get onto a river.

The thread attached to Cracker's article does contain some discussion of this.

There is also discussion of the biggest error in Cracker's article - he weights food, shields and gold equally. In the beginning, food is far more important than shields and shields than gold. Later in the game the balance shifts.

Someone pointed out that a 3f/0s/0g > 2f/1s/0g > 2f/0s/1g and that you would always start by improving the food-rich tile first. Cracker said nothing as this is obviously true.

OCP stands for Optimal City Placement. It refers to placement where there is no overlap in tiles from one city to the next and no tiles are wasted. This is not quite possible but you can come close. Map size has nothing to do with it.

Do you mean OCN? You can find it in the editor.

He probably meant OCN, Optimal City Number.

As for the crosspost, it was 85 minutes between replies. But whatever.

Question: Does the Samurai upgrade to Cav (or anything else)?

Editor Question:

How to make a Civ start in Golden Age?

I've seen it there somewhere, but can't find it now...

Two ways.

Either a) the UU wins a battle

or b) it builds a Great Wonder and it possesses wonders (including this one) which satisfy all its traits.

Thanks, but what I meant to ask was how to make a specific civ to start in GA in the editor. I'm sure there is a tick box somewhere, I just can't find it.

Oh. Different story. I'm no expert on the editor but you could make sure that it will satisify one of these conditions when the scenario starts.

In the AoD conquest, Portugal starts with a GA. I think they did it by giving them two wonders to start off. I don't think there is any other way to get a GA off the start though.
