I just wanted a chance to brag a bit. I finally found out how to make the changes for my Empress Wu leaderhead (et al)

I was reading an instruction for changing the images when the guy mentioned that I would have to change the Bic myself...

I can do that

So I dug out and copied the backup I had made of my bic and double clicked and there I was ... the whole thing opened up and I could actually change stuff. When I tried using just the civ3 edit I got nothing.

Now I just need to get the courage to move that one into the game

So, is there anything I need to know before I do this???

What's causing the anarchy?

War Weariness is causing the Anarchy. Only happens with Democracy.

Can I have long wars with democracy and not decend into anarchy? If so how? Whats the story?

Theoretically, yes. You 'just' have to adapt your style of warring to it. There are certain events that net you WW-points and those events you have to avoid like the plague. A list of these events can be found in Oysteins article on WW from the War Academy:

Add 1 wwp for each
- lost unit without defence value
- improvement pillage/bombed
- unit that are bombard down to 1 hp
Add 2 wwp when a human attacker is defeated
Add 2 wwp when a unit with defence value is attacked. (Even if you win)
Add 16 wwp when a size 1 city is captured 17 wwp for bigger cities.​

2 quick questions.
I'm playing my first Emporer game and doing fair. I'm on a continent with 1 rival (Byzantines) and am on my second war with them and am likely to wipe them out in late Ancient Age. Unfortunately, I'm way behind in techs. I have contact with 3 other civs off the continent (1 with a small town planted on my border).

If I make peace with the Byzantines for techs, what penalty do I suffer if I turn around and wipe them out before 20 turns of the peace treaty?

Two AI civs on another continent are working on the Great Library. If I can manage a cross sea invasion and miraculously take the library, how long do I need to hold it to gain the techs from it? Is this a rational strategy to get out of the tech hole? I'm playing as Persians and loving the Immortals unit.

I'm not sure about your reputation question, so I'm going to leave it alone. However, perhaps I can help with this one:

On the IBT after you capture the GLib, it will give you all techs known to at least 2 civs. It will continue to do so for as long as you hold it, up to the point where you learn Education. If your opponents are past Education, even way past Education, the GLib will still give you any techs known by at least 2 civs. If you run a search around here for the "GLib Elevator," or the "GLib Slingshot," you will find games where it has been used to launch a player from the late AA/early MA into industrial or maybe even Modern Times. So, yes, it can be very powerful. With that said, an overseas invasion before you get Education could be tricky, and if the GLib is far inland, you'll have to fight all the way to it.

The reputation question depends on whether the Byzantines have made contact with other civs or not. If not, you can betray them without affecting your rep provided you wipe them out before they meet anyone. If they have made contacts, or if you fail to wipe them out quickly enough, then your per-turn reputation will be damaged.

With the library, IIRC you get do get the techs in the interturn, but after the AI movement phase, so you need to be able to hold the library during the interturn after you capture it.

You can allie with the other civs against the Bizzies. In the negotiations, you can ask for techs from them and you give an unreasonable amount GPT in return. (as much as needed for them to accept)
Do this on the turn you will whipe out the Bizzies.
The GPT will not be paid after you whiped out the Bizzies - (the alliance is ended) but you will keep the techs.

My plan in this situation would be to reduce the Byzantines to a single city (hopefully not coastal) and then sign peace looking to get every tech that they can supply. I'd then fill up the continent with cities and using my industrious workers (you do have at least 1 worker per city?) improve the continent while adding infrastructure. When the AA ends both you and the Byzantines will get a free tech (gift them to the MA if necessary). With a full continent of happy, productive citizens in cities with libraries & universities, you'll be easily doing 4-turn research. When the IA begins, you'll need to gift the Byzantines to the IA to get their free tech. The AI normally goes along the top branch in the IA, so you should have a free shot at ToE and the tech lead. Once you've got ToE, sell techs like Medicine & Electricity to the other AI to finance the rest of your research. Pretty soon you'll be able to send them little thank you notes

No, but you can optimize your civ for as much GPT as possible. For example, hire tax collectors everywhere until every city in your civ is starving. Next make the deal. Then kill him.

I like it! I'm afraid though I may have killed my chances for a GPT deal if I cut mypeace treaty short.

Yes, build an embassy. Your Diplomatic Advisor screen will now show you who is at peace or war with each other. If there's no line connecting two civ's, they haven't met. I'm guessing that the Byzantine's, with their seafaring trait, have probably met the other continent, though.

An embassy? So to know whether A knows B, all I need is an embassy with C, assuming I know all 3? Or do I need an embassy in one or both of the parties in question?

Building an embassy with A will tell you which civs A has contact with. To establish all contact patterns, you'll need embassies with all but one of them, allthough in practice you can sometimes get away with less.

To do diplomatic agreements (except peace treaty) you need an embassy.
To trade resources do you need a trade route to the civ or capital to capital?

Capital to capital, I believe.

Yes to the capital, no to the trade route (I think).

If you own a city, go to the city view, right click on the improvement. You'll get a pop-up box. If selling is possible, it'll be in the pop-up box. Some improvements, like aqueducts or those granted by Great Wonders, cannot be sold.

AFAIK, the AI doesn't sell improvements, but I've never tried to figure that out, so I may be wrong.

I may be mistaken, but I recall trading workers on an archipelago map, with no cities sharing a landmass with a foreign power. I may be totally wrong though. Can someone back this up?

BTW, don't forget to sell all barracks and granaries right before you capture Sun Tzu, or the pyramids (respectively). That is of course, only if you plan on keeping them.

You can sell them afterwards, too. In my Unluckiest Lucky Start game, I recall going through every city and checking to see if I could sell the raxes after I captured Sun's. Some I could sell, some I could not. In the towns where I could sell them, I did so and still had a rax there.

Good to know you can still sell them after Tzu, I still think my way is easier, as you don't have to check each city, just use the arrow keys to cycle them =P
