Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I'm having issues playing Civ IV online through the Internet button. I already made an account through GameSpy but Civ isn't even letting me make a new account (different email and username).

But, what is the best way to find a game? Isn't there a server/program somewhere with games starting up or is the MP section the best place to look? GameSpy Arcade itself doesn't seem to recognize Civ IV.

OK I have civ4, but when i downloaded off the disk, it would not let me play it. i have all of the requirements for the game to play and then some, but still no play. someone help!!:(

What do you mean with "I downloaded off the disk". Did you install the game or just copy the files onto your harddisk or what? Your description of the error is a bit vague. You'll have to be more precise if you want to get help. Also the exact error message would be nice (if you have one).
Still, I'm not a computer expert, so I'm not sure I could help you.

I have no experience with multiplayer but I would go and ask at the subforum called Multiplayer & PBEM. They probably know more about multiplayer issues at that subforum.
I heard that there were some multiplayer problems with the 1.52 version of the game. So, if you haven't updated to 1.61, then do so now.

Sorry, that's an error that I'm not familiar with. I would try a reinstall (make sure you fully uninstall everything), maybe something went wrong the first time. Did you get an error while installing the game?

You should try the technical support subforum for better help.

Good luck!

What are the best ways to take an enemy city?

I guess it depends alot and the spesific situation. But in the most cases the most efficient way to take an enemy city is like this. Bring lots of seige weapons, (this would be catapults, cannons or artillery) and city raiders(often just the unit with the highest strenght you can build). First lower the citys cutlural defence with the seige weapons, then use them to attack (they may die but that is ok) the citys units causing collateral damage. Then attack and kill each unit in the city with the city raiders. Bring the units into the city to heal. Get reinforcements (garrison units like longbows and machineguns) and fortiy in the city.

Wash and repeat:lol:

Apologies if this has been asked, I'm doing this for a friend.

Is there any way to turn off wonder movies? Apparently he can't find an option for it. I don't have the game on this computer so can't help him quickly myself.

And I'm enjoying Football Manager too much :p

In your My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 folder is the file CivilizationIV.ini.
Open that file using Notepad (or your favourite plain text editor of choice).
Search for the lines...
Code:
; Set to 1 for no in-game movies
NoMovies = 0
...and change the 0 to a 1, then save.

Is there any way to import a specific religion? It's my first Prince game, and I'm the dominant civ as my immortals have conquered the Aztecs to the north. I have the Jewish and Confucian holy cities, and they have spread through my empire. But all the cool kids are Buddist, and I don't want to alienate them by joining another religion. But they are friendly to eachother, and I would alienate them by attacking one to gain a Buddist city. The only Jewish power is the one remaining Aztec city. Once I have a buddist city i can spread it easily, but open borders dont seem to be converting any of my cities to buddism.

Here's an alternative plan: Get open borders. Build jewish missionaries. Spam all of the other countries with Jewish Missionaries. Get them to convert to Judaism. Now YOU are the coolest kid on the block. It costs less to build missionaries than troops, and will hurt your relations much less than going to war.

Spontaneous spread of religion only happens to cities that have no existing religions; once a city has a religion it can only get new religions through missionaries.

As to your problem, if you don't want to do as the previous poster suggested and focus on spreading your own religions then the only thing I can suggest is to identify the bordering city that is culturally the weakest and focus all your efforts on flipping it. It's a long shot but as military action seems out of the question I can't think of any other options.

Oh wait, I guess the other thing you could do is to build a sacrificial city near the border and not connect it to your trade network only the AIs and see if Buddhism spreads there, maybe worth a shot.

I like that, I'll have to see how deeply ingrained Buddism is with Saladin and Peter (Athualpa has the Buddist HC and probably won't convert). I didn't even think of it. But I do like the idea of the Persians (Iranians) converting the Arabs to Judaism.

I know, that's why I was sad to see Confucism and Judaism spreading to my newest cities.

Maybe I'll give those a try, although it's my first Prince game and I'm worried about dedicating resources to things like those. I'm hoping that Saladin will hit me with a missionary before too long, I need to pick a religion before my people get antsier. Also, are Saladin, Peter and the Athaulpe particularly fanatical? I know Isabel will have your infidel hide, but Victoria doesn't really care (-2 for heathenism). Monty of course is my favorite guy to start next to when I'm playing an aggressive civ or one with a strong early UU. He's like a hitman, no matter what you do to him you don't feel bad, and I already neutered that rabid dog. Then there're the Confucian Chinese who already don't like me. I've never played a game where the Chinese didn't attack me, and our relations are already strained because the Emperor (name eludes me) liked Monty, so converting to Confucism doesn't seem worthwhile. In fact I'd like a war with China before the crossbow age.

Edit: I wonder if the Chinese have any Buddist cities? :) :) :)

To I need to connect a road to another nations city to trade?
In order to trade resources, your capital must be connected to their capital. Usually connecting your trade network to theirs is sufficient, but make sure their city is connected to their capital. Keep in mind that coasts and rivers help as well.

That would be hard using workers to build a road all the way to their city though. Does building a road to their captial give trade possiblities like gold for silk etc...In my game I'm unable to give one technology for another it seems or is that because I've got all the techs they have?

Also what are the diplomatic options avaliable?

OK, new question. If I have require complete kills and always peace, Duel and max amount of AIs. Lets say I skip the first turn. The AI settle the whole map so the whole map is filled with its culture after the first turn, where will my settler and warrior go?
