Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Well, if you're in an alliance with them already, they tend to look the other way. Also if you're way more powerful than them. Hard to say, really, without a save.

Why in some games, when I rain down firey radiation death on my enemies the entire world declares war on me, but in other games I can use 20 nukes and still be friends with every one?

If someone else used Nukes first I don't think they'll all declare on you.

I don't have a save because they were from games a while back. I guess it makes sense that if you're in an alliance or if they struck first, the other civs won't get all angry about it. That might be the case I don't really remember.

Is the total number of towns/cities/etc owned by both the AI and the player limited to 512? Does the number change by map size i.e. huge/large/etc.? Obviously one could not build 512 cities on a tiny map but is the theoretical limit still 512?

It is the total of all players and is limited to 512, regardless of map size. I have hit the limit many times on 250x250 and 362x362 playing with max civs. You get a popup when you try to found a new town.

Hi there. I used to play Civ 3 when I was younger and was pretty good (imo), which is usually the wrong one...anyway! I'm here to ask some questions which will probably sound stupid to you. I've either never understood them and want some clarification or I don't know full stop (i'll probably have more questions, so I'll end up coming back to this thread!!)

The ones I can think of now are:

1) This is almost the dumbest question; what do shields, hammers etc actually do? I know there for production etc but I hear people using them alternatively?

2) I only have the very basic Civ 3. Is there any mods/patches I can get to maybe add other Civs, etc (I swear the Arabians used to be on Civ 3, or was that my imagination)?

3) Espionage - what exactly/how exactly can I use this to my advantage over other Civs?

4) I'm just getting to grips with the whole Civ 3 thing again, so I'm starting on Warlord/Regent. I'm pretty confident with taking Civs down on the lower levels, but is there any tips that if I don't follow I will get pummelled on the higher levels?

5) Gold.
How can I maximize trade with other Civs to enhance my income? Is that possible? Is there certain rules I must follow when trading to maximize my end of the deal?

I can't think of any others at present, but if you know of tips that I must follow to make my Civ experience easier and more enjoyable, please, don't hesitate to tell me!

Semantics, mostly. Shields are the production unit in Civ3, Hammers in Civ4.

The Arabs are in PTW/Conquests. I forget which one was added in. There are two expansion packs, Play The World and Conquests. Conquests includes all of the PTW content, except for two minor extra unit packs that you can find on the net somewhere. You could probably pick it up from Amazon or eBay fairly cheaply, or just buy Civ3:Complete from Steam for about five bucks american.

3) Espionage - what exactly/how exactly can I use this to my advantage over other Civs?
Check out A Study of Espionage Missions.

Don't automate your workers. Micromanaging is a pain, but it's worth it. Above Regent the AI gets a bonus for units/improvements, so it's easier for them to build things. Below Regent, they get a penalty. At Regent, it's the same build cost for the human and AI.

It would be better to start a few games at Monarch, see where you lack, and get advice from there. There's a lot of threads in this subforum about the jump to Monarch from Regent. Search for them and read them.

With trading, you have to just keep tweaking the deal until you get the best possible one. There's no button to hit that asks the AI what the absolute most they'll take for a trade is. When you sell to one, you're going to need to sell to the rest because if you don't, they will. Might as well get that gold for your self. Don't break deals, and don't put yourself into a position where a deal will be broken for you, like a Mutual Protection Pact or trading with a civ that has a tenuous trade link to you. Read Trading Reputation, that will help you keep your rep clean so you can trade with other civs.

Ahhh, of course. I thought that the shields were more complex than that. Thanks for clearing that up.

Ah, I bought the wrong disc then! Haha, is there anywhere I can get Civ added to the game from downloads? If not, I'll just pick it up on eBay.

I've never automated my workers....they do some crazy stuff. I'll start a Monarch/Regent game tonight and see how it pans out. Is there any specific set up rules I should follow to test my ability?

I didn't know that your rep was hurt in trading, I'll be more careful in future.

A few other questions;

1) I've always been...a defensive type of Civ player. Usually letting the world go about its troubles whilst I attempt to gain control of the available land around me and hardly building an good army, so I'd be a sitting duck to anyone here in a multiplayer game. I know that catapults/cannons are key to an attack (don't get me wrong, I have attacked Civs with tactics used from here) but what sort of ratio are we talking in an attack on a city?

2) How do I use my advisors to their full potential? This is where I've been lacking, along with espionage. I'm not familiar with the screens etc, any help here?

3) Would anyone be kind enough to help me with my game play, in a week or two? Like I've said, I'm fairly new to "professional" (in that sense I mean I usually just play to pass time and do hardly anything with the game) Civving. I know basic REXing techniques etc (settler factories and the like), but having someone who knows the ropes analyse my game to help me improve would be a massive help.

Thanks for the reply, Turner.

Welcome to CFC, H3inz.

To be honest, the advisors are not much use to you; of far more use is CivAssistII, a utility that you can d/l from this site - it's so useful that I cannot imagine playing a game without it.

The best way to get help is to post saves from a point in the game where you need advice - there would be any number of players (myself included) who would analyze it and give you constructive critique.

First of all, thanks again for the nice welcome.

Could I get a link for the CivAssist? I'll try guide myself through it, somehow!
What does it do exactly - is it a pop up letting you know who doesn't have a tech that you just discovered etc?

I have done this previously on a gaming forum with Civ 2, but obviously hardly anyone played Civ, because everyone’s here!!

Is there a section I can use to post my pictures, or should I send them to players individually?

Here's a link

To upload your saved games click-on 'manage attachments', found by scrolling down when you post something. It will give you the option of browsing through your computer files, then uploading the one you choose.

I really don't want to go through that whole re-install again.

First I noticed that Lisbon was not placed on the coast.

Then in my game yesterday I got this build queue.

Any idea what might be going on just based on your own experience of "Interesting" civ events?

I so don't want to start over all over again.:crazyeye:

Looks like you don't have Saltpeter hooked up.

.

Notice that I am building a bomber and infantry... Saltpeter is long past usefulness although it is hooked up.

Arty and Infantry require Rubber only. Flak I believe doesn't require anything. Knights require Iron. So if the Saltpeter was pillaged and/or depleted, it should default back to Knights.
