Not really, unless (like most milked HOF games) where an enemy is down to 1CC and you would like less corruption and faster workers. In most normal games, the extra anarchy isn't worth it.
A lot of HOF milkers stay in Republic since 9 turns in anarchy drops the food and population. ;)

P.s. To 'slug's comment: And if you use an Industrious Civ, when you've discovered Replaceable Parts, the Workers don't need the "Democracy Worker Bonus", IIRC.

@peanut35: The Civilopedia in the game gives a pretty good explanation of the difference in Governments.

@Dianthus: Thanks for testing those pesky Barbs. :)

Is there a way to make sure your fast units retreat? On different occasions I have had faster units that I thought would retreat stay and die. It appears if the enemy is redlined the quick attacking unit will stay more often then retreat, but sometimes they stay even if the enemy is not redlined. Thanks

One other important detail on this. Of course Shift-U upgrades all of a particular unit - but only if they are in a city with a barracks. I am sure this is obvious, but I would hate for anyone to get messed up because of that.
Just to be water-tight...you need to have enough money to fund all the upgrades...if you want to upgrade 100 knights but only have the money for 99, SHIFT-U will upgrade none.

edit: @Marsden There's an element of chance involved in retreating, so obviously when you most want a retreat, that's when the little buggers fight to the death. :crazyeye:
re-edit after re-reading: When the defender has been redlined an attacker will never retreat, and fast units can't retreat from other fast units.

If you take a look in the editor it shows what the retreat bonus is.

Conscript = 34
Regular = 50
Veteran = 58
Elite = 66

I've looked and looked (though admittedly not exhaustively) and I can't find an answer to this one:

Do you get the "razing a city" penalty if you attack a size 1 town and it ends up destroyed? Most of the time my attempt to capture size 1's ends up with it getting flattened (no option to install governer/raze), but sometimes I actually capture it. Is there some method for capturing them intact? (When I go a-warmongering I generally want to capture cities unless the computer placed them especially stupidly. Not to mention I like having most if not all the AI civs happy with me so I can abuse their trust.)

As far as I know, autoraze=raze in terms of attitude. A town will always autoraze if it is size 1 and has no culture.

edit: Welcome, Spektyr. :)

I remember reading a debate about <10 culture but I could not recall the outcome. The important thing to know is that regardless of version, if the borders have expanded, you can capture.

I believe autoraze is disabled if there's a Great Wonder involved.

Surely that is a situation that could not possibly arise oustide of a test scenario...
A size one town with no culture completes a Great Wonder and you capture it before the borders expand !? :crazyeye:

It's possible. There's no city population/culture restrictions on where an SGL can rush a wonder.

Sorry i keep posting, but this is a great thread. So my new question has to do with what tech's other civ's know. People mention from time to time that you can press one of the F#'s and find out which tech's other civs know. How do you do that? If it is the foreign advisor, where/how does he tell you? Thanks in advance, and the people who answer these questions are great. Thanks all.

If you use the diplomacey screen to speak to another nations you can see what techs they have to trade with you and what ones you can trade with them. From that you can pretty much wok out what they have.

Bear in mind that they may have techs beyond what you can see. For example if they have Nationalism and you don't, they may well also know Communism or Fascism.

so is there a negative effect of talking with them, to find out about their techs and then just going away without any trade?

No. They pretend they have other stuff to do, such as ensuring World Domination, but in fact they're just waiting for you to talk to them. :D
