Really ? It saies that in the editor granted but as a rule it seems to make no difference if you attack or they attack. Im not that fightened if one attacks me even if it is a group. O no dont tell me this is the bit at which the RNG is making up to me due to all the Modern Armour i keep losing to vastly inferior troops. (SPEARMEN  )

If YOU are sure, that's PLENTY good enough for me!

It just seemed that when I've been attacked by Barbarian stacks, I was getting a major Defensive Bonus at the lower playing levels. :)

I'm just setting up a test scenario to make absolutely sure. I've got 100 barbs, now for 100 warriors.... I'll let you know :).

It looks like I was wrong (I hate it when that happens!). I set up a test on Chieftain with 100 warriors each for me and the AI, all regular. When I attacked the end result was:
1 Barb Warrior (only 1hp left)
99 Human Warriors

When the barbs attacked the end result was:
100 Human Warriors

That's close enough for me to say the bonus applies to both attack and defence. If there was an 800% bonus for one and not the other the results would be quite different.

I also tested with Monarch where the bonus is just 100%. When I attacked:
24 Barb Warriors
76 Human Warriors

When the barbs attacked:
20 Barb Warriors
80 Human Warriors

On the GOTM page it has downloads for Predator class, Open class, Conquest Class etc...

What is the difference between them and what should a new player be playing?

Thanks,

Stunner :goodjob:

I'm pretty sure I read about this somewhere around here but I couldn't find them.

Anyway, I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade all of a particular unit once. It's just a small to go through every city and click one by one so I was just wondering if it was possible.

Thanks in advance!!

One other important detail on this. Of course Shift-U upgrades all of a particular unit - but only if they are in a city with a barracks. I am sure this is obvious, but I would hate for anyone to get messed up because of that.

What is the big deal about Republic? It appears a lot of people play this as their gov, but i usually shoot for monarchy then comm, so what is the pull of rep?

Stunner:
Conquest-players recieve certain boni in GOTMs that help them get started. They cannot get awards, though. You shouldn´t choose conquest once you have been inside the top 50% in a GOTM result-table.
Open class is regular.
predator is for expirienced players and they get starting handicaps.
The choice is yours.

edit: The boni/handicaps are explained in the game description.

Money money money money, MONEY! :) Unless you're building lots and lots and lots of unnecessary buildings or are at war constantly (thus requiring lots and lots of otherwise unnecessary units), Republic brings in tons more cash. (An isolated archipelago start with only one lux available before Navigation might be an exception.) Therefore it's much easier to keep up in tech, whether by buying them or by researching yourself. Plus you can stay in Republic the whole game, so only one anarchy period instead of two. At high difficulty levels, both of those things become critically important, and you'll rarely see a high-level player who chooses anything other than Republic in most games.

oh that reminds me, is there a thread or post or something that gives a good comparison of all the gov? and thanks renata for the promt and specific reply :-)

Not really, unless (like most milked HOF games) where an enemy is down to 1CC and you would like less corruption and faster workers. In most normal games, the extra anarchy isn't worth it.

@Dianthus
Thanks for testing it. It seems like my question brought up a lot of discussion :mischief:

Is there any time where you should go for Democracy instead of Republic? :p

Just a thought... ;)
Curiously, i'm playing a deity game right now (totally war oriented - what else, Pinky? ) in which switching from Republic to Democracy could be the only way to avoid a disaster.

I'm Japan (religious - 1 turn of anarchy) and Persia is the runaway AS. In the worst case it's a few turns short of Espionage. It owns more than 6000 golds, and is gaining a lot per turn. Persian culture is over 4 times mine. I have absolutely no courthouses and most of my cities are empty of troops. I'm still with samurais and muskets while they have cavalry and riflemen.

A successful propaganda mission against me could be a big loss, and if i don't build up the military quickly enough, with cavalries and cannons at least, a switch will be necessary.

Ok, it's quite an unusual case :p
