Don't forget in C3C an army of Conquistadors is a Pillaging machine. . . need to use the spanish to try that.

Does your army need to contain certain units? I have several armies consisting of cavalery and infantery running around enemy territory but i seem to be unable to pillage any enemy tile. In contrast single units are capable of pillaging.
BTW: i am playing CIV3 1.29

That is very strange indeed! I've never seen that before, as far as I know every Army can pillage. I has to heve movement left though. So if you combine Infs and Cavs in one Army that's probably what causes this. Try Cav only Armies.
Also, I believe you can't pillage if you have attacked.

Even at the beginning of my turn so with movement left and without attacking any enemy unit i am not able to pillage. The pillage symbol does not appear and no response using the keyboard shortcut!

This is annoying because i am sure i ve read somewhere (and the responses to my question also indicate) that you can use armies to pillage and i set out a campaign to use these armies to wreck the infrastructure around the enemy capitol without major resistance by the AI.
But instead of nicely ruining the infrastructure my armies (cav + inf combined as well as only cav) were just moving around and i had to send in single unit reinforcements to do the actual pillaging while covered by my armies.
So what am i doing wrong, or is this a bug.

Well, armies have different abilities in vanilla, PTW or C3C.
IIRC, armies cannot pillage in vanilla. Using a pillaging strategy, you would go with explorers like space already suggested.

GOTY (Game Of The Year) is indeed Vanilla Civ. This should be patch 1.29, the last patch for Vanilla Civ.
If you're thinking of adding an expansion pack, I would go with C3C. It has all the features of PTW and then some. More traits, more wonders, more civs. .. basically, 'more'.
As for patching, you should always patch to the highest level available. Patches often include game tweaks and fixes that did not come out in the testing stage. It's not so much 'different versions' as it is fixing code.

'vanilla' usually refers to plain Civ3 at latest patch level (1.29) - w/o any expansion.
PTW (Play The World) is an expansion set, so is C3C (Conquests).
PTW has more civs, rule/improvement changes/additons and multiplayer options. Some stuff *could* be done by seriously using the vanilla editor to get a 'PTW'-like mod, but there's also some hard-coded tweaks. Aforementioned army rules, removed bias for scientific civs' free tech, global warming changes (also, nukes don't transform tiles), irrigating from hill city possible, improved interface options etc

Does anyone know where I can find a downloadable version of C3C Beta Patch 1.15? I followed the link at the Civ3 site and it won't let me download and I can't find it anywhere else.

I don't understand something about how peace treaties work in diplomacy reputation:
I know many agreements like Right of Passage lasts 20 rounds. And if you attack a nation you have that agreement with, before the 20 rounds are up, you will take a diplomatic reputation hit -- that is, other nations will refuse to sign agreements with you for quite a while. I understand that.
But what about agreeing to a Peace Treaty? The Game Rules say specifically: "Peace Treaty lasts till one country goes to war with the other." To me that means Peace Treaties don't last 20 rounds and they don't last any rounds at all.
Here's my specific situation that has confused me:
I conquered all of Russia but one city. I moved units up to Russia's last city. I asked for Russia's advances in return for a Peace Treaty. Russia agreed, I got the advances and we were no longer at war.
Then Russia demanded that I move my units away from it's city (out of it's territory). I refused. RUSSIA DECARES WAR ON ME. And then I take Russia's last city.
When a Right of Passage agreement came up for renewal with India, they refused to agree to a new Right of Passage "Because of how I treated Russia".
I don't understand the game rules here:
1. I didn't declare war on Russia. Russia declared war on me. Does refusing to remove your units from enemy territory, when demanded of you by another nation, mean you are declaring war on them to the AI-GameRules.?
2. Even if I attacked Russia before they declared war on me, why does the AI/Game Rules count this against my diplomatic reputation -- if peace treaties don't last any stated number of rounds in the Game Rules?
If I agreed to a Peace Treaty with Russia, does that mean I can never attack them for the rest of the game -- lest I incure a diplomatic reputation hit?
WHAT ARE THE GAME RULES ABOUT THIS?

Pretty much. In order to keep a good reputation, a war should never start between you vs "X"ai if you have any units in X territory, regardless of how the war gets triggered.
