Could anybody please direct me to newbie threads. I would like basic explanations about economy, growth, military tactics etc. I already read many articles in the War academy section but many were a little bit advanced for me.

Sorry to link off site, but Apolyton has some basic strat articals at http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=59216 that I thought were good.

This is the newbie thread. That is, it used to be, but due to political correctness it's called "quick answers" nowadays. Check out the F.A.Q. and come back when you have more questions. I'd redirect you to the War Academy, but you've discovered that yourself. If the faq doesn't answer your questions, nor provide more insight in the war academy articles, just come back here and ASK.

How do i play as the Medes in a normal game? I can play them in civilization 3 conquest campaign "Mesopotamia".

Eman, you misunderstand me. I'm talking about Expansions. You know, when a popup says "The People love you and want to expand your Palace", and i was simply wondering if it lost all those. (now, i don't know what effect is has, but it is a nice visual.)
Answer to your Question:
No!......You DON'T lose your Palace's Visual Expansion(s). :)

See SesnOfWthr's post about 18 up! :)

If I make gold a strategic resource, required to build Statue of Zeus (which is currently too easy and according to Encarta was constructed of ivory and gold . . .), will there be any side effects? For instance will the AI trade for it even if SoZ has already been built?

Probably yes. You could also make marketplaces, and perhaps banks dependent on gold as well. This will give it more value to the AI.

Good idea. If I'm not mistaken gold is a strategic resource required for one Wonder in the Fall of Rome scenario (I don't have access to Civ right now or I'd check myself). Has anyone tried leasing gold to an AI after that Wonder's been built?

You have to mod the map in the editor. It's kinda tricky. I've been searching for a very particular thread that used to be stickied on some forum, with the subject of "How to use Austria in C3C". If you could find that thread (or "some mod" that can use the search option for you), just follow those instructions. Another option would be to check out the creation and customization subforum. No doubt someone over there could help you.

No, but I've been selling resources to the AI in the Age of Discovery scenario that are completely useless unless they're in your city box. Really. 5 gpt...

So unless I make gold a requirement for other things like Turner suggests, it will be a huge exploit. Does the AI buy iron when it no longer has units to build that require iron?

EDIT: Krikkitone has pointed out that RR and factories require iron, so it never becomes useless. I hadn't noticed, iron has never been a problem at that point, it's always coal I have to connect to or conquer.

How many units can u rename?
what exactly do you mean, gk? how many different types of units, or how many, say samurai, will the game store different names for (e.g. 100, 512, 1024, etc...)?

What is the easiest civ to win with on Fall of Rome? And what level of development should you achieve before you begin to fight the Empires?

yea i meant like how many total units like 500 or 600 units can you name?

What do you do in a scenario to allow the human player be any civ?
My scenario won't let me play other civs. Only one.

Try 'scenario properties' - 'scenario' - 'playable civs' all should be checked :)

A question myself:
what is the maximum amount of units and cities in the game?

got into the editor, right click on ur starting location, click properties, and for owner, change it to first player instead of a specific civilization.
