You want to know something and can't find it in the FAQ?

Ask here!

Don't bother to read through the entire thread, just ask!

Lots of people are willing to help.

Please DO read throught the relevant section of the FAQ thread (which is also a sticky) before you post though.

(If you really want the previous thread, it's here. ;) )

Oh do I get to christen this thread?

What does a newbie need to know for the jump from Warlord to Regent? I've already surmised that I won't be getting all the wonders I want...

Hmm. . . toughie. I made the jump when warlord was too easy.

The thing to keep in mind is that all the bonus' you had against the AI are now gone. You will research as fast as the AI, and they will build as quickly as you. So it's basically even footing.

Read Bamspeedy's Deity Settlers in the War Academy. That's probably a pretty good place to start. When you can be pumping out a settler ever four turns, then you'll be able to expand quickly. I would also set up a Worker Factory, and a Defenisve Factory, where you can spit these units out as fast as a Settler.

The AI is going to be a bit more aggressive, too, so you're not going to be able to send those settlers out unescorted as much, nor leave the cities empty. It gets much worse higher up, but you can still get away with it some in Regent.

And don't be afraid to step back, either. Jumping to a new level can be intimidating. When I went to Monarch, it was OMG! Now monarch is a touch to easy. But I'm not that fond of emporer. . .

If Regent does seem to much, one thing you can do is get into the editor and make a Semi-Regent level. This is where you put the difficulty somewhere between Regent and Warlord. I've done this, and it's been a bit since I've done it. I'll have to dig the file up and see what I did, then I'll post it back here. I think I gave the Ai extra units between the two levels (say, if Regent gave 2 settlers, and Monarch 4, I gave them 3. And I'm just throwing numbers out, not saying that's what it is in the editor.). And the AI to AI trade rate was tweaked, as well as the AI production bonus.

Hmm. . .now that I'm thinking about it, I may do that with Emporer too.

You could try tiny maps on a higher level at first. I find that smaller maps are generally easier than larger maps.

The only problem I have with that is I don't play small maps. The couple I did threw my timing all off.

I like room to expand. But it does make those early wars tiresome, having to move across a large/huge map like that.

Hey, I just realized level is a palindrome. :D

Back to the question, however: In C3C when you start an epic game there is a setting for AI agression. I always leave it at Normal. My question is how do the other settings effect AI's play? What effect will a higher setting have on my style of play? Do I need to build massive armies at higher AI agression levels to avoid them charging across the border and stomping my cities flat?

Pretty much, yeah.

I don't have anything to back it up with, but I've always looked at that slider to be a kind of multiplier on the AI aggression, with 'normal' being baseline. I'm sure there's a formula for it, but I've never bothered to track it down like that.

Each civ has a different base aggression level. Afaik the slider just adds or subtracts a level for each point beyond "normal".

During my turn, I am trading techs with Greece (everyone else is more advanced). I sell them currancy for map making. I am now on the next age, look at their techs, and they have Enginneering!!! How did they get that, when currancy is a required tech? This is all on my go, so they should not have had a chance to trade.

Any ideas?

Scientific Civilizations get a free technology at the start of each new age. They also would have advanced to the next age, and thus got a free tech. (Greece are scientific)

I see. Thanks.

I've never figured out what the 3 numbers mean after the civilization name and government in the info box. Any help?

Might as well... I'm sure a moderator would be happy to move the question to the appropriate thread.

I think the order is money.science.happiness.
I remember always having 0.10.0 in the early game.

Settler factorys without rivers

I have tried searching for a good write up of settler factorys, but
Icould not find one. Any pointers? In particular I am interested in
the conotatinos of not having a river to build it on. Can you still
get a 4-turner going with 1 cow on grassland (without building an
aquiduct)?

"Early chariot rush"

I read this article on the "Early archer rush" with interest [1], and
wondered if anyone has any comments about trying the same with chariots.
I always prefer the fast units, and have horses near by. I want to
eliminate another civ from my island (Demi-god level).
