Quick Question from a beginner

Hello there, I am new to Civ games in general and to these forums, and have just gotten Civ V, my first civilization game. I conquered everyone on the continent I was on and want to expand, so I sent a few frigates out to conquer a different empire on a different continent (I am on the two continents map)

I got the city down to low health, but I couldn't capture it. I think I need land troops to do that. How do I get land troops to a different continent?

Select the unit and then right click in the water like you would to move anywhere else. Once the unit reaches the coast they will automatically "embark" which allows them to move across ocean tiles.

I can add that you'll need to make sure you've researched Optics, in order to embark units.

the thing is though, I want to take them across an ocean. How do i do this?

You need to have researched Astronomy.

It's a good idea to escort embarked units over the ocean, too. In case barbarians show up on the way

Yes make sure you escort your land units when sending them across the seas, they are more vulnerable then sea units (obviously)!

to get the land units to go into the ocean just drag the movement cursor into the sea hexes - your unit should change into little ships. Then just navigate to wherever you want. You need to have the necessary techs mentioned above to be able to make land units embark, and also the necessary tech to be able to cross ocean (the deep blue) squares.

In order to embark, you need to research Optics, which automatically gives the Embarkation promotion to all units within your borders. If a unit is outside your borders when you research Optics, you'll need to bring them back to receive the promotion.

Once you research Astronomy, units with the Embarkation promotion can now enter Ocean tiles as well.
