Quick Questions and Answers

What you will always get - this was in previous editions of Civ as well - is that the AI simply has more units to start with, so more chances to mop up those ruins.
I'm not sure whether the contents of the ruins deteriorate when you go up level, this was the case in Civ III, but I haven't seen any indication of this in Civ 5.

When I try to launch the game through steam a dialog comes up that the game is "unavailable at this time, please try again later". What does this mean and is there any way i can fix it?

EDIT: It works after a couple of tries, is there any way to get it to stop happening entirely?

At a guess, your computer is having internet hiccups, and Steam is trying unsuccessfully to contact the servers when you launch. If that is the case, your only real solutions to permanently fix the issue are to get better internet service (or a better wireless router, if you are using one), or keep Steam in offline mode when you are not actively shopping or updating your games.

Do units immediately get a 50% defence bonus then you press fortify or does in gradually increase over turns?

How can you check in a unit of yours is fortified and what defence bonus it is getting?

Cheers.

The bonus is 25% the first turn, and 50% the second turn of fortification. Units that haven't moved yet get the 25% right away and go to 50% the following turn, otherwise the sequence is delayed one turn. You can tell they have a bonus when the unit icon turns from a circle to a shield, but as far as I know there is no way to know which level of fortification it has. Note that selecting a fortified unit breaks fortification, even if you don't move it, though you can at least get the 25% back right away.

Legalism (under Tradition) gives a free culture building in your 1st 4 cities. However, I always lose the gold when selecting Legalism. Why is this?

"Free" as in you don't have to spend hammers to build it, not "free" as in you don't have to pay upkeep. You lose gold income because you are now paying maintenance on those 4 culture buildings that you weren't before you picked it.

D'oh!

Thanks.

Am I doing something wrong or is there no defence against a nuke attack?

How can 6 jet fighters (on patrol duty) fail to spot one slow bomber delivering a nuclear weapon into their city? They had not engaged any other aircraft

Sometimes I have adopted this when I already have four Monuments in cities. Does it then provide the next tier of culture buildings instead?

I can't seem to find any option anywhere in the map editor to change the world wrap setting to 'OFF'...
Is it there or am I just grasping for straws?

No worries, found it.

In the world builder, under Map Editor Tools\Misc\World Wrap (just switch it off)
:)

Nukes are intended as endgame super units, not ones that can be intercepted by fighters. It's been that way in all the Civ versions, though most have had some kind of SDI to at least give a chance of interception. I agree that there should be some counter, but currently there is not.

Not 100% sure, but I believe there would be no additional benefit in that case, beyond unlocking the next tier of available policies. Personally I find it one of the weakest policies.

What is bumping?

In forum-speak, it is posting to a thread for the sole (or at least primary) purpose of moving ("bumping") that thread to the top of the topic list.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to be able to upgrade all units at the same time such as you could do in Civ 3 by pressing Shift-U? An a large world with many troops, it's getting very tiresome to have to go through and upgrade every one of my troops individually. I've been trying to look through the forums for an answer to my question, but no luck.

There are two CS's at war, so between turns I am always seeing their batttles, which is getting annoying... Any way to avoid this? Also, I forgot to check Quick Combat for the game; any way to turn that on? Can I have Quick Combat be the default for future games?

I'm playing on King and finding when warmongering unhappiness is stopping me dead in my tracks when puppeting.. Should I be razing to combat this?

Edit:- and for the first time ever the game Im playing I havent razed a single city yet kept my happiness above 10

What do defense pacts do? Do they just give friendliness modifiers?

I am asking because in a recent game, I was at war with A when I signed a defense pact with B, C, and D. They did not declare war on A, even when their units actually attacked. OK, I said, I guess it only counts for new DOW's.... NOPE! When F also declared war on me and attacked, B, C, and D did nothing. NOTHING! Thanks a lot  .

defensive pacts state that whenever a pacted state is attacked you go to war with them against the same enemy... but i dunno if they go to war when you are attacked, they should though :/

Yeah... I trade a Defensive Pact for a Defensive Pact. We should both be bound. Is this a bug because I was at war when I made the trade, perhaps?

I know if my DP partner gets attacked I auto-DOW the attacker on the same turn. Do the AI get a wait period? Sounds crazy. I'm guessing a bug (but since I have very little knowledge about the game mechanics, I can't rule out user-ignorance  ).
