simple question: do you guys (or girls:p ) play on or stop if you reach a point where you can confrtably say "I've won' ?

I always play on untill at least 2050 or an other victory condition! for example I am now playing a maraton game on a huge pangea with all civs on warlord. I have a permanent alliance with Munsa (he asked nicely so I couldn't refuse:lol: ) and my score is almost as high as the next two (caesar and victoria who also are in an alliance) combined. We're way ahead and I got 29000 gold or something. But I just can't stop, I did rush the UN because I thought they would all vote for me. NOT!! They all vote for england and italy and they did nothing to earn that! ( ok I wiped out two civs but they wouldn't convert to confucinism! so what does a guy do then?)

I always play on but this game makes me wonder if anyone else does so too.
this was the last game on warlord level I'm moving up to noble!

Usually not, it often gets boring after a while if I have a clear lead. About one in five, I play on because it's one of those really fun games that you remember for a while :)

For those who stop early, how do you determine your winning position and when do you call it?

I can understand abandoning games you feel are hopeless more easilly than abandoning 'won' games, though it does depend alittle on how close you are to winning.

And obviously everybody should play as they wish, there is no 'right' way to go about it.

I have only quit one game that I was winning and that was cause my computer just couldn't handle the huge map anymore. and I was so close to a space race victory

I only quit when i lose... :mischief:
Seriously, if i feel the game is lost, no point to continue it. Else, an already won game can be (sort of) a time challenge: i'll try to win it as fast as possible, not just wait for my spaceship to reach Alpha Centauri. Ramp up military and ATTACK! I love razing and nuking cities when the other people don't even have infantry  muahahah

I quit midway most of the time. I'd guess that I've finished maybe 30 games of Civ since Civ 1, which is probably less than 20% of the number I've started. It doesn't even matter if I think I've already 'won' -- I'll stop when I decide that I'd be having more fun playing the start of a new game.

yeah just played a monarch julius, wiped out 3 civs and kept all their cities, managed to rush courthouses ect and get merchants, just entered modern age, my continent which i fully own except a few cities on wasteground the ai felt like colinizing, my empire is bigger the mansu and fredrick combined, and fredrick asked me to become his ally, it was epic and domination was off so i ran knowing that i could of easily won space race or conquest :)

I only quit if Im getting totally trashed and sometime play on even then.
But then Im still working my way up to Noble

i often quit when i winning.

once i played on, when i thought it was obvious i had already won, but Mao then almost beat me in the space race before i won with the smallest of margins.

now i usually play on a little longer, but still often not till the end.

since civ1 i think i finished like 3% of the games i played. But i once played one till the end ... being wiped out!

I play on, even after I win the game, I just like to crush and raze the other civs to the ground so no one is left on the map. :D Is that a bad thing? I dunno, but it sure is fun.

I almost always play on. To keep it interesting, I'll focus on a victory condition that may not be readily achievable or one I haven't gotten yet.

However, playing on Prince mode, I don't often find myself with having to make that decision. More often than not, I'm quitting because Cyrus's modern tanks are crushing my spearmen. :spear: Ouch!

What does "lead" mean? "Lead" is only relevant if you go for Space Race victory. You cant say you're going to win the Cultural Victory if your 3 cities have more points than 3 best cities of rivals. The time might be over or an AI might conquer you, or dominate the world before your cities get enough points. Then i suggest try more difficult victory condition if you have a clear "lead", whatever it means.

I play on and hone my military tactics. I like to see how quiclky I can dominate another civ. Panzer Blitz!!!
