RAM upgrade

@GrandAdmiral

It came in two packages, I looked for a double but couldn't find one.

It is also in the first two slots, as thats where the old ones were, should I just put them in one and three then?

The internet on this PC is very slow, so I can't get the file (2kb/sec, and it cuts off occasionally). It seems to be one longish (nothing to compare ir by) beep, I could record it I suppose ((beeps for around a second, then a 3 second pause).

@Rik Meleet

1. Yes, it makes the same sound.

2. Yes, it is definately in the right way.

Hang on, does that mean that is in fact something to do with the memory?

He's trying to find that out. If the same beep pattern is there when no memory is put in then its probably not registering the memory. I'm assuming that you didn't short out the memory if your having the same problem with your old memory sticks. Thats probably why he wanted to know if you put them in backwards.

Yeah they shouldn't be right next to each other. Try just putting one of the sticks in the 1st slot then booting. If it works then put the other stick in the 3rd slot.

Tried that, it still doesn't work.

Thanks for the help so far :).

Hmmmm, my dad said he is going to book a tech if it can't be fixed by the end of tonight, as he has some some things he needs to do urgently on it...

Do you have the first DIMM populated? If your motherboard is dual-channel, do you have them placed in the appropriate DIMMs (usually 1 & 3)?

If you have those right, try one stick at a time in DIMM 1 and see if it comes up. You could have a bad stick that is making the comp hang at POST.

If you can't get the comp to come up with the new memory, get some memory that you *know* is good and see if it'll come up with that- if it does then you likely have two bad sticks.

If you have your motherboard manual, or can find it online, look up the beep pattern; though I'm sure that it's about memory.

It's nearly impossible to put DDR memory in backwards though, you'd probably break the stick before you got it in.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:.

My dad took it too a tech today.

You wouldn't believe how simple it was.

It wasn't pushed in fully, despite it feeling like it was.

:lol:.

Well, thanks for the help guys, and sorry for wasting your time (kinda).

I learnt quite a lot from you anyhow.

Cheers :goodjob:

Guess what? Asking if the RAM sits perfectly is one of the first things computer techs should ask on such an issue. I guess that you're not the only one who learnt something...

Thanks Ram, but your just too much for my machine to handle.

;).

I just added another 512MB. :D I've yet to test it out on my games though. But there is definitely a difference. ;)

Yep. IMO 1Gb is the happy place you want to be at nowadays. Unfortunately my comp at work can only handle 256mb, which gets pretty painful....

Oh, some trivia: We were looking at some stuff about Vista the other day, and the lowest end version that M$ is planning to offer will support a maximum of 256mb RAM. That just warrants a :lol:

Wow, that's really quite shocking.

You would have thought that would be the MINIMUM.

:ack:.

Is that the basic version which only allows three applications to be open simultaneously? I believe it will only be sold in countries with a developing economy.
