Random events - too uncommon?

I seem to be getting too many events for my taste. I'd like to have maybe 5-10 over the course of a game but I'm getting a lot more.
I wonder if there is a relation to game speed? I only play marathon and if the average number of events per turn doesn't change with game speed, there are a lot more events in a marathon game than in a normal game.

Then again, most of the events are very minor so I don't really mind that much.

Two peculiar occurrances:

Spoiler :
- I mysteriously lost an Attack Submarine at sea, and the area was deemed 'Bermuda Triangle', according to the event's text. I haven't tried sending more ships to the area to check if it's a persistent thing, though... :scared:

- My airliners keep crashing in Indian territory, and the goverment usually helps me with the rescue and recovery efforts, which improves our relations. I fear they actually hate my guts: they test their SAMs on my civilian airliners, but in the end, the turn of events benefits them with better diplomatic relations! The bastards! :gripe:

Well, I got some that were really bad. Once I had around 6-7 barbarian axemen appear right next to my northern border at 200 AD. Unfortunately, it was rather lightly defended because it had been quiet so far.

I think you may be right on the increased number, because I too play marathon and get loads of them. I really like them though, because they add a flavor you don't normally get,
Spoiler :
failed diplo marriages, slave revolts, technology found in city ruins, pearls found in fishing grounds, even caribou herding.
To me they are the most "fun" aspect of BTS, whether they be positive or negative events.

And you can switch them off in the cutom game screen if you don't like them.

I think there are quite a few random events, certainly on marathon speed, i had at least 15 or so in 700 turns of play.

My main issue with random events (an i think there overall a nice addition) is the poor presentation, the text boxes look tacked in at the last minute, an dont feel like there part of the original civ interface, they need tidying up, A picture of the event would be nice, along with an advisor face pop up an the text box appearing in a speech bubble perhaps, rather than a simple & bland box of text appearing in front of you.

Certain random events are basically just telling you something, there is no choice or options, yet you still have to click on the option text like your making a choice, why? sort the text boxes into two types the info ones that pop up with a close button for when you finish reading them, an the multi choice ones were you are given your options.

Following on from the point above, some multichoice tasks have the other options greyed out, so you can only choose one option, if they are unavailable to pick dont show them! an if that leaves only 1 option then put it in the info text box as per my first sugestion.

Best one i had so far was
Spoiler :
A babarian invasion which resulted in a several strong barbarian units of my frontier, a city was lost as a result

So thats it really, nice addition but sharpen up the presentation next patch please!

I think the problem here is everyone seems to have different definitions of whats too uncommon, Personaly Id like to see them every 10-15 turns, think of the scale of time in civ, so what, 300 years just blew past and nothing happened?

Events seem to occur in bunches - especially the storms and mining disasters.

What I find really rare are the Quests. Many games I won't get one at all.

The barbarians are ridiclously overpowered and should be taken out. I do wish I could see how they do against the computer. Alot of the events are very minor, like 1 more commerce on a square. I wish their were more late game, as the ones that happen are even more insigificant given teh size and power of your empire. It is more realistic the way it is though.
