Random Freeze-Up

I have had Civ-4 since it came out. The only problem I keep having, even with the latest patch (1.61) is the game, at random times, freezes up. I can complete some games and not get very far into others before I get a freeze-up. have to reboot to clear the problem. There seems to be not common factor. I have checked and I have the latest drivers for my video card and sound card. Is there another item I could have over looked?

are the freezes more frequent on larger maps / in later eras? civ4 needs a lot of memory, and manages it rather poorly. also graphics cards tend to overheat. therefore, I'd recommend, try the reduce the load of the computer by, e.g.:
- open up your computer case, let fresh air in
- before running civ, close all other applications
- turn off movies
- turn off audio
- turn off graphics features
- turn details to low
- play smaller maps / less civs
This could prolong your gameplay.
