I've been looking through the promotions list in the manual, and Bombardment is unique to ranged units and opens up lots of other very useful promotions like logistics, range, volley and mobility.

Now the thing is that Bombardment says that it increases 'combat damage', not 'ranged combat damage' like accuracy and barrage.

Does this mean that bombardment only improves the melee combat damage of ranged units, and not the ranged attack?

Logistics which gives ranged units 2 attacks per turn, and volley which gives +25% against fortified units (both only exclusive to ranged units) also only state that the bonus applies to 'combat strength', and not 'ranged combat strength' like accuracy and damage.

If these promotions only apply to melee strength and not ranged, what is the point in having them on ranged units?

The Range promotion gives +1 range and is opened up with Bombardment I, surely most people are going to want to spec their ranged units into the Bombardment line to get Range + Mobility, and then if they do apply to ranged attacks as well Logistics + Volley.

The upgrade names definitely sound like they are ranged combat type bonuses, but the manual only states they apply to 'combat damage', and not 'ranged combat damage'.

Also, the last ranged units are Crossbows / longbows / Chu Ko Nus. I havnt checked what these upgrade to, but it looks like they upgrade to riflemen. What happens then to a ranged unit that is heavily promoted with the ranged combat promotions, that gets upgraded to a rifleman?

It seems strange that there is no industrial and modern era upgrades for the ranged units when there are so many ranged unit promotions for them to take. After the middle ages are over, Englands Longbows and Chinas Chu Ko Nus have no upgrade path and become useless :(

No, it means the manual is full of imprecise statements.

Unclear, but most likely is that the promotions are wasted.
Alternatively, they might be able to upgrade to cannon.

I think this is by design; if you want to be doing lots of ranged bombardment in the modern era, use aircraft.

I would say "combat damage" would mean both. When it's in combat, the damage is modified. Doesn't matter if it's ranged or melee.

It's also more likely Archers upgrade to siege units than melee ones, as that makes way more sense.

The industrial eras have siege units just the rest of the eras, but the shift moves to aircraft, for sure.

So yea, what ahriman said, basically.

Correct me if I'm wrong (i'm not, i just like saying that) but bombardment is a naval promotion(regardless of it being in the ranged category in the manual), as in only ships can get it.

Melee - Shock (Bonus in open terrain) and Drill (bonus in rough terrain)
Ranged - Barrage (Bonus attacking arough terrain) and Accuracy (bonus attacking open terrain)
Naval - Targetting(Bonus vs Ships) and Bombardment(Bonus vs Land targets)
Air(excluding helicopters) - Dogfighting,(Bonus in air sweeps) Targetting,(bonus vs ships) Siege(bonus vs cities) and Interception(bonus when intercepting)

The basic strength boosts ^

Pedantry. He is clearly referring to the Barrage, Accuracy and similar promotions - you know, those that affect bombardment. Why are you making an issue, when its obvious what he meant?

There are bonuses that ranged units can (presumably) get that do not make sense when on a non-ranged unit, which ranged units might upgrade to.

I'll just go ahead and let that speak for itself.

No need to apologise.

Schuesseled, why dont you download the manual and check for yourself?

Bombardment is unique for 'ranged units', and it is required to open up Logistics, Volley, and Range, which are all archer promotions.

Here you go, not a single one of these promotions are available for Naval units (promotions for naval units are completely different and say 'Naval', not Ranged. Ranged units = Archer, Crossbowman, Chu Ko Nu, Longbowman, and mounted archers):

Here are some of the upgrades for Naval units, note that they 'Naval' under unit type, not 'Ranged'

Bombardment is only for archery units, not for naval, air, or any other.

This is how you can upgrade Ranged Units -

Bombardment I > Mobility > Range > Indirect Fire > Bombardment II > Logistics > Bombardment III

+60% combat damage, +1 movement, +1 range, +1 attack per turn, fire over obstacles (like mountains).

Accuacy and Barrage are also available, but their lines are far weaker than the Bombardment line.

Bombardment is a naval promotion, that is a typo. A bunch of naval promotions are grouped into the ranged section because naval units are ranged units and whoever wrote it simply got confused.

Read the description, bombardment gives you a bonus to attacking units on land, its a naval promotion. jesus.

According to the Civilopedia, Bombardment is a ranged promotion.
