I think the music is all fantastically awesome except for the Modern Age, which is so fantastically awful that I turn on Winamp at that point.

I think the modern age music fits well. The future is usually seen as depressing, nuclear warlike time. The modern age music is depressing and reminds me a lot of what world war 3 would sound like. The industrial age fits good with wwii.

John Adams (modern era) is good and all, but was it really necessary to make the WHOLE modern era be his music?

I like most of the music in Civ4, with two exceptions. One is the christian choral, but that's only one track, and I think I'll eventually replace it with something else. It simply sounds too wailing for me, but I know that many people like it.

The other exception is the whole modern era. I wouldn't mind if Adams' music were only boring, because then I could simply ignore it. Unfortunately it's annoying as well, so I usually turn it off. I think I'll replace the modern era music with the respective Civ3 tunes, which were *much*, much better (especially the jazz piece).

worst: modern by a landslide!!!!!! i cannot abide that music for more than 10 minutes. it's the reason why i have a couple of custom music folders now to use when i'm not listening to something else. one is stuff i pulled directly from the soundtracks, but only the songs i liked. baba yetu is in there 4 times i think *giggle*. which leads to ...

Dang, what is everyone's hate for the modern age? I think it fits the mood perfectly. Opinions are opinions though.

It'd be nice if modern age actually had some more mainstream music in it, I'd be happy if they put in some Velvet Underground. They use it for the Rock n Roll wonder so they might as well go the whole hog. I've not heard of John Adams but there are still quite a few "classical" artists who wrote in the Modern period like Shostakovich or Gershwin who wrote better stuff. Rhapsody in Blue had its name changed form the Manhattan concerto I believe, it certainly fits for Civ.

It'd be interesting if they linked some music to civics and relegions. I think the ancient and classical music is quite weak (though I agree the Modern is the worst). Having music based of relegion would certainly add flavour (and a huge incentive for me to get Islam).
