Rank the music

I think I may be the only person who likes the modern era music. I don't like every track, but I looked up some of the selections, and I can see why it's not accessible. But how can you not like foxtrot for orchestra. That's far from depressing. And someone was right, the music is tonal for the most part, which I appreciate. That said, they could have gotten so many different sorts of music for modern.

I like the Industrial era the best because I love Dvorak and Beethoven, and really the late 18th-early 20th centuries produced the best classical music ever written. yes better than mozart and bach. but that's just my humble opinion ;)

Though I never hear it because I go straight to medieval, Classical is the best.

Got to love that Civ 3 music

The modern music is starting to grow on me, though....

What the modern period needs is more military marches. Something more upbeat and bombastic to offset the pensive John Adams music. For example, in my music folder I put in the anthem of the Soviet Union for the modern period. Regardless of who I'm playing as, it just feels right to hear that as you watch your first tank roll off the assembly line to go defend the motherland. I wish I had the mp3 file of that one famous Soviet march, "Farewell to Slavyanka":

(Actually, this would be a better leaderhead theme for Stalin than that boring rendition of the Volga Boatmen...although Peter can keep it).

Shostakovich would be good too. And maybe mix it up with an instrumental piece by Frank Zappa...I also have this CD of symphonic pink floyd (without lyrics, played by an orchestra) that would be perfect...still that brooding sort of feel, but less monotonous than the John Adams music.

Edit: BTW, has anyone noticed the animation of the infantryman reading letters from home when he's just standing around for a while? I know people justifiably complain about the graphics strain on their hardware, but for me those are those little touches of historical flavor that I just love.

Even the leader's personal music themes are better in the renaissence/medieval periods.

worst: modern by a landslide!!!!!! i cannot abide that music for more than 10 minutes. it's the reason why i have a couple of custom music folders now to use when i'm not listening to something else. one is stuff i pulled directly from the soundtracks, but only the songs i liked. baba yetu is in there 4 times i think *giggle*. which leads to ...

best: vanilla opening menu, aka baba yetu ;)

I can't take any of the music set ups since I play long slow games and I have heard it over and over and that just grates my ears.

However, Baba Yetu is in my music files and on my MP3 player! If I am not doing Winamp streaming some station and am playing local files, I too have gotten Baba Yetu mid game. Yay!

What I need is to let Civ play music while coming up and doing menu, and then automatically go silent. If it was really smart, it would silence Winamp during the menu and then let it take over again. ;)

I hate the modern soundtrack. I can understand why they did it, but it just sounds too alien and depressing. If the idea is to have music without lyrics there were still plenty of alternatives. There are a lot of composers that I don't know much about but have created better stuff. Also there is the alternative rock scene that has created some masterpieces that are devoid of lyrics. I for one would have loved to hear for instance Mogwai's Helicon 1 and Oceansize's I Am The Morning. Even Treefingers by Radiohead would have been much nicer, although that's more of an Alpha Centauri style song. And what about Sigur Ros? They must have plenty of songs that would work. In fact, I think I'm going to get rid of that John Adams nonsense right now.

EDIT: Btw, Baba Yetu is great of course. It has to be praised whenever possible.

Classical,
Modern,

the rest is a homogenized western mess that i cant even tell apart.
