Ranking the Civs for the AI?

I dominate so much with Gilgamesh, it makes me sad to see the AI fall flat with him.

Clearly you never had 6 warcarts parked in front of your 2nd city while you're still trying to get the 2nd warrior out ;)

BTW Egyptian chariots are grossly underrated. Available basically from turn 5, their ranged strength is 5 less than crossbows. They sure are expensive to build, but that's what chops are for. And I didn't see the AI build AC units until pikes yet, so there's that.

I don’t know how many hundreds of diety games I’ve played, but never, even once, has there been a competing AI civ that started coming even remotely close to steamrolling its way to a domination victory (or another victory condition aided by domination) as a human player would (unless, essentially, roleplaying).

Some are dangerous in the first hand full of turns, but I just don’t see the AI actively or competently pursuing victory conditions. So deciding which ones are the best comes down to which ones make it the most challenging to win against. I’ll cast a vote for Russia, for when I’m trying to play a peaceful culture game.
I dont think anyone's talking about Domination. The threatening militant civs are only threatening because they often do gobble up a neighbor or two which then makes them more competitive at peaceful VCs. We all know Civ 6 is too easy. I think this thread's more about which ones you could stack in a single game in order to "challenge yourself." Yeah, the quotes are there because challenge is a silly word in this game.

The Civs I named were all ones that have made me switch tactics at some point or another. IE trying to run a knight rush against the Mapuche even a tiny bit too late is a no go. Against any other civ its generally pretty effective.

Lately I've been playing (on emperor) without early conquering, focused on quick expansion instead. Usually means I will lag in sience and culture early on. Science I find much easier to catch up than culture so the civs that give me trouble are the culture civs like Congo, Rome, Russia, etc.

Edit: meaning I have a hard time pulling of a culture victory, not necessarily losing because of it. Gonna have to work on that, science victories getting a tad repetitive.

CV does seem like the only VC the AI can resist very well. Probably because resisting it is so passive. Kongo was really stymying my CV when I did my Kristina playthrough. I spammed him hard with rock bands. Still took forever. Wound up settling for a diplo vic instead of trying to overcome his 800+ domestic tourists.

Funny coincidence, started a game with a random civ and it gave me Kongo. Capital with Pingala, 5 slot palace, Apadana, Oxford U, Hermitage, Sydney Opera, National History Museum and of course amphitheatre and archeological museum. Rome, America and Hungary had decent tourism output but got a cultural win at turn 296.

A related question is whether you choose your opponents or settle for random ones? If the former, you can make sure Kongo is not in the mix.

I random opponents and usually my own civ as well. Though I feel some pressure to fill in the HoF now.

I pick my civ, and add Sweden for the Nobel Prizes. Might use that mod which adds them without her, though, for my next game. The rest are usually random, though sometimes I pick based on what music I like.

Victoria is the worst. Always fails hard.
it has to be her agenda. The AI is terrible at amphibious attacks and she tries to make friends on her own continent. Georgia and Norway are consistently better than Vicki's England and they dont have a lot going for them.

Victoria tries to settle far apart to take advantage of her ability away from her own continents. Poor soul is trying to play the civ as intended.

Babylon is a disappointing civilization when handled by an AI. A lot of potential, yet not much impact. AI Ottomans are also weaker than I expected.

Genghis Khan of Mongolia and Prince Charming of Hungary are quite effective warmongers; Robert Bruce and Seondeok can run away in tech, Pericles just cancels the possibility of a cultural victory. Hungary and Netherlands are usually strong, "better than average" in everything.

(Wow, this thread is old. Sorry for necroposting)
