Rat26 - Random AWE

I'm up next, right? I'll look at the save tonight once I'm done with my turnset in Elear's game (that should go quickly). I'll very likely play tomorrow night.

Pre-turn:

MM for 5-turn Knights in Rat26 and GLib with no wasted shields.
Change the geek in Najran to a clown to prevent Fustat-style riots.
Change Ankuwa to Treb - a Duct would be wasted there.

The NW front looks a bit dangerous, but I think we'll have enough troops to handle it.
Upgrade a 3MC to Knight from South's End.

Plans:

Bombard the stack near Khanesh and pick off those MDI while covering loose workers with a couple of Pikes.
Use the Army to raze Mauch Chunk and go off marauding further into Iro territory.
Use the Army near Yamama to pick off units near Karhuyuk and/or go exploring to the N.
Send another couple of units to reinforce the stack near Mecca and take the Arabic city there.

Did I miss anything?

Sounds like a good list to me.

Finding the Iroquois Iron or Horses would be especially useful, so I agree with your exploration plans for the army(s). I think you will be seeing knights real soon (you could check to see if they have both horses and Iron now - I think they do, IIRC). It would make things much easier if we could put a stop to that.

Also, the Iros still have Horses, but they lack Iron. I'd say we're in good shape, despite Kufah and our redlined Army.

You aren't the first...I screwed up my attack on Kufah during my last turn set. ;) Annoying city.

Good set in all -- looks like some serious damage to the Iroquois.

I've got the save, but we'll see when I get to it, I'll need some time to look it over.

The good news is that everything west of Akwesasne is clear. We might need to play Whack-a-Mole with Iro settlers for a couple of turnsets while we fill in that land, but we're pretty close to ready for a drive to the east.

Here's hoping for a Leader sometime soon.

Did we elminate the Arabs when we took their two cities? Or do they have another now?

I think I would like to build 2 Galleys to explore a bit to see the shape of the land and also to glimpse the Incan lands which I think we can see across the water. Early on the AI tends not to attack ships so you can explore more. We don't fear additional contacts at this point, I think the Iroquois are enough under control. We may even learn some techs from the GLib.

Arabs are still alive. I'm not sure if they have a refugee capital somewhere or simply a stray settler, but I'm sure we'll figure that out soon enough.

I will play my set later today.

Lurker:
am I the first to notice that Kufah is a Ancient City but the Iroquoi are in the
Middle Ages

Pre-turn: Check the cities, but the MM looks pretty good. :) Rename Malatya to NE Iron.

IT: Iroquois longbow kills the 2 hp MDI army. Several Iroquois longbow move towards NE iron. Three Iroquois galley move along the north coast. One arabic galley moves along the east coast. Most importantly, Horsietown gets a cultural expansion. This helps against the Inca town to the east, and also adds more tiles to work. Resistance also ends in Akwesasne.

760 AD - Manage a few builds, generally keep building knights and trebuchet where needed. Start looking into where to build a few galleys, as I agree with the need for several. Pick off an Iroquois longbow. Start moving for a drive to the east. Pillage some Iroquois furs in the NW that an island city seems to be using (a job Elephantium seems to have started). Capture Kufah with 0 losses. Only minor MM is needed. (Combat: 2-0)

IT: zzz... Akkad (Babylonian) builds the Sistine Chapel. A fleet of Inca galleys is seen in the east.

770 AD - Start on the first of the galleys in Aden. Move more troops around. Bombard a loose Iroquois pikeman to 2/4, but lose a 5/5 knight against it anyway. (Combat: 4-1)

IT: Three Incan troops (AC, Spearman, Chasqui Scout) land next to Kufah. More galley moves from the Inca and Iroquois. An Iroquois knight kills one of our loose knights. Salamanca completes Leonardo's Workshop. Heliopolis completes Smith's Trading Company.

780 AD: Bombard Oil Springs into the stone age (all pikemen redline). Raze Oil Springs after several elite victories without a leader. Gain a leader defeating the Incan landing. Rush the leader to Kadesh, where I turn him into an army. (Combat: 12-3)

IT: Hello Egypt! They want 990 gold for Theology, I decline. They have 14 cities; they can sell maps and communications (they have the Babylonians and Mongols, and apparently know the Iroquois and Inca already). I accidentally close the dialog window by double clicking somehow, oops. As soon as the IT ends, I'll call them back and declare war. England calls up immediately (9 cities) and also wants to sell Theology. Declined. Now, just like Egypt, they can sell maps and communications with the Babylonians and Mongols. Do we want either? A world map would be useful: it costs 250 gold, or our world map + 100 gold. Contact with the Babs is about 125 gold, while with the Mongols is only about 70. Let me know ASAP, I can keep the dialog window open for the rest of the evening.

Umm, I believe that our rules generally are that you only make contact to declare war. We definitely don't buy contacts, as we would need to declare war with them immediately also. I think the only thing you should do is dial up everyone and DoW them, no trades. I thiink we all forgot you were new to this series and didn't adequately clue you in as to the rules. I assume that is strict AW, no trades, but we could ask Greebley or Rat for a definitive ruling.

Ooh, see, I thought that was standard for AW games. No harm done though -- I haven't made any trades, only scanned what was on the diplomacy screen.

I found this in another Rat thread:

Always War-
No initial trading, must declare war on every civ the first turn you meet them and remain at war for the rest of the game. No peace treaties, ever. Pillaging, worker baiting, city baiting, using armies, etc are all fair game.

Again, sorry about that. We can't really undo our minimal knowledge from that, but it won't make a difference.

I'll continue ahead with my turn. Ignore the PMs I sent. :mischief:

Here's more of a real question. Raze or capture Salamanca? ToA won't do us any good, but Leonardo's might (upgrades to cannons and cavalry later). OTOH, big flip risk, so I don't particularly want to.

Keep th city, Leo is too good to be abandoned. Just don't park any units there until Iro's are gone

Keep it, load a ton of troop in right after capturing it to quell resistance. Next turn, pull them out. If there's still resistance, starve them out. Also, sell all improvements there. Place a strong attacker nearby and a strong defender inside. Move on with the majority of your troops. If you raze nearby, less useful cities, there will be less cultural pressure and less likelihood of counter-attacks. In AW, there are 2 wonders you put on the A+ list, and those are Leo's and Sun Tzu's. Other keepers are the Pyramids and JS Bachs. Worth the trouble to keep.

X-post with ThERat:)

Done, now, we have two spare armies...is it wise to put more knights in them, or save the armies? Right now, the Iroquois are basically dead, and a matter of turns to pick off their remaining mainland cities. It is unclear if there are any civs behind the Iroquois. The armies would speed up the conquest of the Iroquois by a little bit, yet it is not really necessary. We will have to wait for galleons if I load up the armies, however.

The Overseer is exactly right, follow his strategy
