Since this will probably be the last turnset i will play in this SG, I would like comments and tips from the experts ;) , whether i can improve and whether i can move up etc etc

i got it

with conquest it probably won't be the last set, but let somebody else finish it anyway. can't do the honors every time...

halfway, it's getting too late due to civ crashes. pushing forward goes well, but had to abandon some unprotected cities.

Been a bit busy lately, but I still hope to load your game and offer concrete comments.

Turn 0:
reduce science
our opponents have few cities left and are far from MT and nationalism.
people happy, decent production. only geography can slow us down now.

IBT:
MI wins against knight
magnetism->ZoG in 7@-20gpt
most cities love their king

Turn 1:
capture chuito
capture athens

IBT:
LB attack our army in copenhagen
resistance in both new cities quelled

Turn 2:
switch most muskets to cav, they won't arrive in time to help i suspect.
kill the units around copenhagen

IBT:
greek units show up in the south.
byzantines walk around in the jungle too
cuzco completes magellan

Turn 3:
abandon lugdunum

IBT:
those greek units are annoying, lose slave and cannon
byz landing, we'll lose another city

Turn 4:
capture delphi and corinth
abandon alesund
rush reg pike in marathon
capture aarhus
disband the trebs in aarhus for privateer

Turn 5:
kill the roaming greek knights
reduce science
capture caesarea

IBT:
lose privateer to dromons
starvations and resistors quelled

Turn 6:
kill 4 muskets in constantinople

IBT:
we enter IA
ToG->we draw medicine->steam :(
not sure it's worth going for steam, but with conquest we don't need the gold either

Turn 7:
capture constantinople
science to 90%, 10 turns@-66gpt

IBT:
some resistors quelled

Turn 8:
scientist bring steam down to 8
raze nicaea
raze vilcas
almost missed some units that landed in the fog near athens

Turn 9:
capture heraclea
forget once more razed cities don't have roads left and move cav army on mountain :wallbash:

IBT:
cav on slaves holds off LB but loses to musket
enough starvation on greeks, will only starve constantinople now
resistance in corinth and heraclea ended

Turn 10:
capture trondheim
raze adrianople

Notes:
cannons are meant to get rid of fog
slaves are mostly in groups in hope of rails
army in front of varna. might be a good idea to move armies in constantinople in front of smyrna to wipe out byzantines next turn.

This looks as if it is going to be wrapped up soon.

As TheOverseer mentioned, emperor on pangaea would be next. I think that won't be that easy, as even in this game the initial phase was rather dicey. But, of course, we can try if the team is game. We only need to chose a proper Civ. I liked the religious trait for the short anarchy. Maybe, we could try Japan with a much delayed UU. Or the Celts with a very powerful UU?

With Japan, the late UU could be a killer, but we could probably survive that long. With both being religious, short anarchy and cheap temples are good. Japan does get cheap barracks and a head start on HBR, since the Wheel and Warrior Code are freebies. I will say my latest foray against Japan made me respect the Samurai, I was losing multiple cavalry vs unforted samurai. As always, Celts sound like a winner. The UU is a bit pricey, but the 2 move swords are very powerful. Cheap temples, fast growth. Either civ sounds good.

1375 AD: Looks good.

IBT: Berserker lands.

1380 AD: Kill Berserk.
Capture Smyrna and Varna. Byzantines aren't destroyed.
Capture Reykjavik from the Vikings.

IBT: Byz settler lands.

1385 AD: Byzantines are Destroyed. when I destroy the settler.
Capture Oslo and attack Bergen (Viking capitol)
Get a Leader and form a Cav Army
Capture Machu Picchu (Incan). Attack Tiwanaka.

IBT: Lose a Cav on a hill that was pillaging Incan Iron.

1390 AD: Capture Bergen Vikings are Destroyed
Pillaged Incan Saltpeter. They now have no resources
Tiwanaka Captured. Incans have 6 cities left. Greeks (at most) 1.

1395 AD: Healing.

1400 AD: Healing and move up

1405 AD: Attack Cuzco and Huamanga. Both are heavily guarded.

IBT: We get Steam and a scientific leader as well.

1410 AD: Decide to Rush Mil Acad rather than Newton.
Capture Cuzco, Huamanga, and Vilcambra. Running high gold to rush boats. Started Rails.

1415 AD: Capture ollantaytambo, and Corihuayrachina. Attack last Incan town of Vilcos.
Spot Greek border off the coast. Fortunately, I was clever enough to only put 3 units in the Army I founded. This is an example where it worth having a size 3 army even if we are playing Pangea. Hopefully it is not a size 1 island.

1420 AD: Capture Vitcos. Incans are Destroyed

1425 AD: Land on Greek Island. Rush frigates to try to Kill Greek Galley in case it has a settler.

1430 AD: Kill city and the Greeks are Gone

Included save if anyone wants to see how it played out.

congrats to the team!!! well played :goodjob:

I don't think it was too easy a game and this team has played it out pretty well.

Let's see how we can perform as the Japanese then on Emperor

well done team, on to emperor now.

the expensive uu of the celts would fit into obc (lower support costs, higher action radius), but japan is certainly a good choice too.

i'll be on vacation from 26.6. until 7.7.

AW on Emperor might be a bit high above my skill level.

Congrats on the victory! not high on the scorecards, but it was not easy by any stretch of the imagination

I did not play after you, but I think you didn't play shabby at all. I don't see any reason why you could not continue with us. Just pay a little more attention to MM and you should be doing fine :goodjob:

I will start the new game on the weekend.

AW on Emperor might be a bit high above my skill level.

Congrats on the victory! not high on the scorecards, but it was not easy by any stretch of the imagination

I checked out your final turn and it looked pretty good. I can list some general pointers.

1) We did lose several cities during the endgame. If this was intentional, then that is fine - sometimes it is worth having an army move on and abandon a town. The only thing to comment here is to plan ahead to try to get Cavalry or Muskets into the towns when you can because kept towns can be good science farms. You can also sometimes allow the enemy to take a town and then take it back of course.

2) I saw a number of fortified units that might have been some use on the front - mostly artillery units. Remember to check cities for fortified units and move them forward. (Of course also leave some offense/defense for defending coastal cities) I also feel it is worth sending Elite attackers and defenders toward the front to maximize leader potential. Don't use Elites for MP unless really obsolete. In this game we had no need for MP so all Elite could be advanced.

3) Remember in the early game not to attack outward when it exposes units if your defense is better. Also remember injured units tend to retreat to heal so leaving a single injured unit to retreat rather than attacking into danger is good.

4) As the Rat mentioned MM is important. It is my belief that you can increase your skill a full level (e.g. from Monarch to Emperor) if you go from very little MM to good MM.

5) Generally you can play SG's at a higher level than members of the team can play solo because you share knowledge. I think you can give the next game a try Rodent. Just feel free to stop and ask if you want to.

Thanks for the pointers :)

Regarding 1) it was intentional, i only kept the cities to let the armies heal quickly and then abandoned them.

with 2) i just got lazy  . i figured armies would do the job.

No comment on 3) cause you are right

regarding 4) I am usually short on time and if i start microing, i will only be able to play in weekends :(

I would like to play Japan, Gallic swords seem like a expensive mountie to me. The wheel allows us to spot horses from the start. Religious is not really good for a AW trait but we can still use it to stay in republic and switch to monarchy to get rid of WW , This allows us to fight with republic indefinitely

Cheaper Barracks mean they can be whipped.

On 4 you don't need to spend every turn with lots of MM. In the early game there is only a few cities and turns are fast, so you can take more time on it.

In the later game, going through the cities twice in 10 turns will remove lame choices made by the computer when cities grow - mostly when it choses shields in corrupt towns. Do this and you will be doing much better than not at all. Doing more is better of course, but this much will get you most of the way there.

Also for CivAssist II can be great for telling you about cities that will riot with no work on your part. (just be careful about moving out MP)
