Rat29 1BC AWM - pangaea

I think holding the line is a good turn in this position. I don't think we will make much progress until Cavalry. By then our core should be in better shape too. The short front line is good but the terrain makes it very difficult.

Getting cities past the mountains might be nice, but they also don't have hills for defense so I am not sure. Making muskets to defend vs the Berserk might be worthwhile too.

hope rodent can swap, won't have much time until the weekend.

usually i'm all for more pikes and less muskets, but with our limited city numbers we need quality defenders.

Elite Knight kills an Red lined longbow

IT- pretty Tense IT . 3 Berserks attacked Palmyra, we get an leader :cooool: [party]

in other IT action. Army holds out and kills two MI near Delhi.

I take this as a good time to stop.

what do we do with the leader? do we use him for a small wonder? do we make an army and fill it now? do we fill the army with cavalry when that comes? I would like to go with cav Army but team discussion is required

I can't recall if we have the pentagon (I think we do) - if not then go for that small wonder. HE is usually not worth wasting a leader on IMO, if we don't have that then start some city building it. Need not be the best city.

If we DO have pentagon, I think creating an army now and waiting for cavalry is best as you suggest. Cav armies will be what really allow us to make progress vs the AI.

agree with greebley. in case we have pentagon i don't like to save the army, but MT seems to be so close, it's worth waiting for.

Cant play now, but checked the save and found we have NOT Built the Pentagon.

What would you like me to load the extra space in the armies with? More MI, wait till cavalry?

EDIT: played a turn

Rushed the Pentagon in Herakleia.

Killed a Berserk. KIlled 2 Longbows. Killed a Spear. Razed a Greek City

IT- pretty Tense IT . 3 Berserks attacked Palmyra, we get an leader :cooool: [party]

I was wondering how the Berserks got within 1 tile. I would want to attack a Berserk as opposed to defend. Did you only have the 1 musket there? I wouldn't think so because you said that the guys might kill you for rushing it.

I think the trebuchets must have had a bad round that turn. Attacking a healthy 2 defense on a mountain with a 4 attack is a bad bet. All it takes is bad bombardment results. And I wholeheartedly agree that berserks might make someone nervous! Pentagon is a good move, 4 unit armies are much better, and we are on a Pangaea, so transporting armies shouldnt be an issue. I would bet that the Byzantines are on an island, but we probably won't need armies there.

Its a game of Chances BarbSlinger-

If I attacked a healthy Berserk with a MI

berserk=4 def (mountain)

50% chance of winning

And Opposed to that a Musket in Palmyra

Has 100% Bonus from walls and hills.

Musket=8 def as opposed to berserk's 6 attack

Better Odds here

Turn 8-Science- Metallurgy in 9 turns

Treasury-312 gold . -58gpt

Combat- Kill a Longbow and a Archer.

MI army kill a MI.

Bombard a MI to Redline and another to yellow line status

Find out that we are strong against the vikings, who are currently attacking in force. Romans have stopped sending units so they are paralysed for the most part. Byzantines are not even attacking. just moving a few dromons around.
Greeks are still attacking, and so are the Incans. But Considering the Units the Incas are sending, i must say they Dont have Iron

Turn 9-Science- Metallurgy in 8 turns

Sounds good. I like seeing the completed courthouses and FP. That will really help. We can build up some knights and then upgrade them - the best thing about knights is not themselves (they are a lot of shields for an attack 4 unit), but the fact they upgrade to Cavalry, IMO. Having a bunch ready for upgrade can be a huge boost for our push forward.

The Roster:
TheRat - on vacation until 17th June
el_filet - Up - playing sometime this weekend
Rodent - Just played
Greebley - on Deck

I think when we get MT, we shut science down to lone scientist and start upgrading knights and building cavalry. Cavalry should win this. Get 20-30 cavalry and we can rampage across the map, I doubt we'll need to get into IA units.

If we are close enough to winning. Otherwise rails speed things up so much that they seem better than more cavalry that are not in armies. Rails essentially free up every unit to participate in the attack and get them there instantly to the right place. Also rushing is very ineffective in terms of cost and with large enough science farms (i.e not this game) tech can come very fast.

However, given that this is Monarchy and we don't need boats and don't have science farms, chances are decent we will be close enough to the win to do exactly as you say.

Turn 0 (880 AD):
switch to duct in lahore
don't like our two fronts, but see nothin we can do about it.

IBT:
lots of nav unis move around
our 136g left make us teh wealthiest nation in the world

Turn 1:
lose our mi near byzantium

IBT:
romans send in knights

Turn 2:
lb forces knight to retreat

Turn 3:
notice herakleia produces reg units, start rax
science to 60%, 5 turns@0 gpt
switch units in palmyra & calcutta to rax

IBT:
zerks from the south

Turn 4:
kill some units, like most turns

Turn 5 (930):
same again

IBT:
tiwanaku completes KT, wikings and greeks switch to leo

Turn 6:
some leaderfishing. those zerks are really annoying...
HE in chalcedon takes too long, move it to calcutta

IBT:
greeks start to send knights too

Turn 7:
reduce science to 50%, metallurgy next turn

Turn 8:
metallurgy->MT

science back to 60%, MT in 15@0 gpt

I stop here. held the line with neglible losses, but i doubt we can afford to wait for MT to go on the offensive.
i might have used to much workers to improve indian cities, in the north there's better use for them.
suggest we try to shift our line to fur city and conquer the cites the greek filled in behind it.
armies have turns left if you agree we should force the issue.

Preturn: I think progress on the other front will be more effective. If we push forward on the eastern front, it will make it bigger, but the western front could get smaller first.
So I will move 1 or 2 Armies there depending how many Armies I need for defense.

Builds look pretty good. Do minor MM.

Rat29_AD960.jpg

990 AD: Capture Mycenae in the west.

1000 AD: Lose a Knight to an ACav.

1010 AD: Lose an Elite Knight to a 1 HP Spear. We are fighting mostly Incans.

1050 AD: Capture Byzantium to the West.

1070 AD: Auto-destroy Hareid a useless desert town.
Syracuse has shrunk so it Autodestroys instead of Capture. Romans are useless with their shrinking cities.

1090 AD: We get a leader - will become an Army for Cavalry.

Notes:
Was tired and rushed so log is a bit sparse.
Western campaign is almost done unless we sit around waiting for towns to grow. They are size 2 now but will likely shrink. We may just want to kill them especially the Roman ones as they will just shrink again.
Rounded off the turns since it was one turn to Mil Trad. Next player can have a full turn of Cavalry with an empty Army waiting.

Rat29_AD1100.jpg

suggested eastern cities because they're bigger, but getting rid of our second front certainly helps us more. expected an inland sea too, but this explains the few units we encountered there.
