Posted here because it's ultimately related to video games, which I think makes it more fitting for AOG instead of A&E.

Link to video.

It's going to be written by the same folks who write the games, so don't be afraid of Uwe Boll or his cronies being behind it.

So, fully animated, seems humorous from the samples we got already, and is written by the same folks who made the game.

I've got high hopes for it. If it's executed right, you will still be able to follow it even if you haven't closely followed the games.

Anyone else think we could see more video game films if this one does well? The 2010s have been a video game movie decade thus far - Scott Pilgrim, Wreck It Ralph, and now this. A successful decade, no less; it seems we're finally breaking the stigma against making video game-themed films, but this one will be purely based off a franchise rather than just simple references.

Cautiously optimistic.

Sounds like it's also animated by the same folks, using the same assets from the games.

There has to be a Valve-made TF2 film after this.

More detailed information at Playstation's Blogs. Particular notes are that this project has been desired for years but only now is it finally materialising due to the necessary partnerships.

To be more precise, Rainmaker is the company that is animating it. However, Insomniac Games is having an advisory role with animation, so they probably have supplied the models.

Invest in cryogenics.

I would love to see a Legend of Zelda movie. But, unfortunatley, ever since that horrendous Super Mario Bros. movie, I don't think Nintendo would allow such a thing.

Maybe one based off of MvM.

Provided the writing team keeps a hand on it, and it's fully CGI/animated, I see no reason a Zelda movie couldn't prosper. That's where all these video game movies went wrong. They:

  • Tried to make a self-contained plot (it's looking like Ratchet's going to fit into the rest of the series).
  • Integrate the video game into real life.
  • Made use of real life actors.
  • Weren't written by the same people as the source material, which is already opening the can of stupid.

If it's fully animated, written by the same people, fits into the existing plot, and doesn't try to make it all realistic, I think pretty much any video game movie could do well, really.

My suggestion: make any video game movie as if it were a game, except without the gameplay component. Same graphics, fits into the overall story, etc.

I would love to see a Live-Action Zelda film more than a CGI or Animated one, but that's just me.

I'm sorry but could you give me some examples.

I completely agree.

1) Super Mario Bros.
2) Super Mario Bros.
3) Prince of Persia
4) Super Mario Bros.

Thank you very much, Erik.

You are welcome Mr. Luther.

There's also the Final Fantasy movie for 1 (does that really qualify though?), the Doom movie for 3 (really a lot of movies qualify if by "real life actors" he means live action). Doom also qualifies for 4. Really anything by Uwe Boll falls into at least the fourth one.

To be fair, the FF games don't really have a continuous story that runs through all of them, so any movie kind of had to make something new up. There is Advent Children, which was a sequel to FF7, but it's only worth watching if you're a fan of the game. It's pretty much a fanservice film.

Which is why I added that note. I've never actually seen Spirits Within, but I did hear that it lacked a lot of the recurring elements of the Final Fantasy series.

I saw the final fantasy spirits within a long time ago. Remember it being just ok. But in general all real life adaptations of video games suck. In the name of the king is based of dungeon siege and is supposed to be really bad too. Alien vs predator movies are pretty bad. That one is kinda unique because it was a movie that spawned a game that spawned the vs movies. I think zelda might work as a real life movie if it was done well ala peter jackson lord of the rings, but I wasn't too impressed with the hobbit. I also think zelda might work because each zelda is like a reboot with a different story. Seriously is there any continuity between games? Are there any sequels? Because in each one even if it's a different time period link has no concept of what happened before, link to the past seems completely independent of ocarina of time and link's awakening for example.

Personally I really want to see a world of warcraft cgi movie. I think if they tried to do a real life adaptation it would be awful, but they already have some pretty epic animated cut scenes and trailers. Just make a super long trailer for a movie lol. I wouldn't even mind if the script was not original, they could easily do a script off warcraft 3 with the fall of arthas ending in archimonde on the world tree battle.

I think starcraft would work too, reminds me a lot of starship troopers, just make it less campy.

Edit: I forgot about street fighter and mortal kombat movies. Those were awful too. Video games to movies don't have many good examples that's for sure.

im gonna guess it will be mario levels of suckage... it's better off being a tv series with lower expectations, less funding, and usually more artistic control over the material.

Yes, actually. How they all link together is somewhat complicated, but they do. There's a line of games up until Ocarina, where the timeline splits in two; one where Ganondorf was stopped before he did bad things and one where Link stopped him as the Hero of Time. Each timeline has its own sequels from there; Windwaker (and its sequels Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks), for example, is clearly part of the latter, while I think Twilight Princess is in the former.

So the original legend of zelda where link defeats gannon, then link shows up in link to the past and it's a completely different universe almost but it feels like it's separate because link starts off not being a fighter but being forced into it finding his dad killed. Then there's link's awakening on game boy which is fine as separate because it was all a dream. Then ocarina of time, ok link's a little kid and there's time travel, but how does link to the past and the original fit in? I still maintain that they are separate, if not the entire timeline of events at least the link's are separate characters because they keep popping up as newbie link lives in the forest, finds a sword and goes on this epic journey. If he really had the experience of the last game then wouldn't he have a bunch of awesome gear and skill set already? The events might be loosely tied together but I never felt like the characters were. Maybe someone could make a graphical timeline.
