I think the originals are run through Steam using something approximating DosBox.

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/964/

That's the link to the complete pack of ALL X-com games, although I heard Enforcer and Interceptor were so-so. I still bought the full pack because the three games I'd have bought anyway ended up costing the same amount as buying all 5, so why not get the other two essentially free?

But yeah, they work.

Thank you, I just bought it. :-)

Enjoy! (again) :)

I don't know whether to bless you or curse you. :) I sat up all night playing the game. I had forgotten quite how much fun it is. I'm in March now, and my troops (which include two sutvivors from the original squad) have just stormed a big ship that had landed near an alien base I recently discovered. Not a battleship, the size next under it. I captured the alien commander alive, and I didn't lose a single solder - one was wounded, but I cured her with a medikit and sent her back to the mission ship. (She's a good soldier, so I'm glad I didn't lose her. Remember how important it is to be careful not to lose your experienced soldiers?) The alien base is near the North Pole and I am getting ready to take it out. Of course, I know that many players prefer to keep an alien base around because of all the ships that land there and make good pickings.

It's a miracle I still have friends, what with all the time I spend playing Civ and now, once more, good old X-Com (the original game, mind you, not one of the sequels.)

Sorry for posting off topic, but after this I will never badmouth Steam. I just bought the game and downloaded it it plays wonderfully. Never mind the crappy graphics - who cares?

If Firaxis decide to produce a new version of X-Com, it had *better* conform closely to the original.

Steam's a mixed bag, really. It's a pain in the ass to deal with sometimes, but they've also helped bring back a lot of classic games that will run on modern rigs. Good Old Games does the same, but it doesn't always have licenses to the same games.

As for the new X-com.....like I said, I hear it's gonna be an FPS. :(

1.) Next X-Com game is going to be an FPS. No, I'm not kidding.

2.) You can get the original X-com and Terror from the Deep on Steam. Cheap, too.

Both are abandonware, so you can get them free. There's also some open-source projects following X-com, best one is UFO:Alien Invasion, http://ufoai.ninex.info/ . Unfortunately that's still not a complete game, but looks great so far. Last time I played it it got boring after a couple of missions since there's a lot of balancing and cutting of redundant stuff that still needs to be done.

A problem with the original is that X-Com has a bug so you can't play on harder difficulties. This never got patched. So once you've played it through there's no extra challenge, unless you want to play it iron-man, without saves. Terror from the Deep was a bad sequel, didn't really bring much to the game. The original X-com was better in all respects.

What bug is that? I never noticed it, and I ended playing it on the hardest level.

Gave it a 7, it's solid but not perfect for me.

Cons:
No religion makes no sense.
No corporations, while they weren't the best in the past they are still needed.. they are currently the most dominant organizations in the world... in some places.. even more than governments.

Pros:
1upt is a godsend. Stacks of doom were unacceptably unwieldy and just boring. If they were brought back I would most certainly step away from the franchise.

IDK's:
Less building... I haven't decided if this is good or bad yet. As it stands I have no problem with it.. but there is a part of me that would like to see more buildings.
Long build times are unrealistic IMO but I'm pretty sure it was done for balancing reasons.
Difficulty. When the game in increased in difficulty, I would like to see the AI be better than the player... not be "better" by essentially "fixing the dice/rules" so they can seem better.

I'm totally new to civ games. Civ V or "CiV" as some call it, is the first iteration I have tried. I gave it an 8 because I quickly got addicted to it, but it's not a 10, because it was buggy before the patch, and the AI and some other aspects are a little bit laughable. I love the fact that the game rewards you for concentrating on improving the size and sophistication of your empire just as much as if you were to just use the traditional "spam units" of most warfare/strategy games.

Glad you're enjoying it Marcus. If you like it, keep an eye on Steam sales for Civ IV complete going on sale as well - you may enjoy that quite a bit too. Nice to see some new one-more-turners entering the fold.

Indeed, welcome to the ranks of Civilization fanatics! :goodjob:

And like AfterShafter said, definitely look in to Civ 4 after you've played 5 for a while - especially if you find it getting a bit boring. Civ 4 has much more to do for many different types of players, whereas Civ 5 tends to make everyone into warmongers just so there's something to do. ;)

Unless you were aware of this problem and jumped through ridiculous hoops to fix it, you probably didn't. In the unmodified game, you're always playing on Beginner regardless of which level you choose.
Fortunately, 'Beginner' is quite challenging for the lowest available difficulty setting... hooray for a time when games were games and gamers were masochists.

*Ahem* Min-maxing and no variation.

There will always be min-maxing in any strategy game, even civ5.

There is less variation in civ5 than civ4.

I don't know why you felt the need to type out a cough.

I don't know why you felt the need to type out a cough.
We had a fairly funky weather around here, in the past couple of months, and there was a nasty flu with lots of coughing affecting people - so maybe that's why he's coughing online, too. I got my flu around the 20th of December and am still coughing occasionally, so I can definitely sympathize.

why do you always trash civ4? the only reason many of us picked up civ5 in the first place was that we enjoyed civ4 so much.
I'm not trashing IV, It's a great game and I still play it.
It just isn't the "Build an empire to stand the test of time"-RP like V.
