RB29d - Cultural Extermination

Quick question about the culture influence. Sulla mentioned in his "example game" that culture is stronger on the axis than on the diagonal. Wouldn't make the red dot/yellow circle the stronger choice?

Stronger is an odd choice of words, but ... functionally, it requires an extra border pop before we start dumping culture into the city square. If St. Pete was one tile W we would start touching Paris at 150 culture. Where it stands we need 750 culture before that happens. So we'll have to wait ~60 extra turns to start dumping our culture into the city square and as a consequence we'll gain less cultural control of the city square with each turn since Nappy will have a longer history of culture in the square.

But I like the St. Pete placement because we took away the best spot for Nappy to settle his 2nd city, and we will fairly quickly take away his best tile.

You are correct that the red dot/yellow circle is the preferred location, but we are racing both Rosie and Toku for that area. Rosie, in particular, almost has to put his 2nd city on the river because the other land around him is garbage. Where we go with our 3rd city if we get beat to the river ... I was advocating an equivalent placement to St. Pete on Kyoto (1 NW of the N Ivory). We should be able to quickly claim the Ivory and put up a good fight for the Corn.

We could claim Stone with the 3rd city at the expense of not generating cultural pressure on anyone. I think we're better served to choke a couple of the AIs out early to give ourselves more land to settle later, even if it means we don't get Stonehenge.

I would research Mono until there was 1 turn remaining, switch to something else, and then switch back once the 3rd city is founded. That way we'll get Judaism for certain in city #3. I'm not afraid of the AI research capacity on this level.

I am generally in favour of being aggressive and trying to found Judaism in our 3rd city too, just for the coolness factor (and it'll probably be quite effective)

Got it
Since everyone is ok with judaism in third city, I'm playing it now.
If that spot north of japan is taken, I'll probably stop and post here for settling choice

Back up strategy for third city / judaism:

If we cannot found the third city close to either Toku's or Rosie's capital for some reason, I think the holy city might be wasted on it. We will probably settle for a production heavy city instead, which will eventually give culture through wonders (or a later religion).
In that case I suggest we try to found Judaism in St. Pete to finish off Napoleon early on. I just checked the safe and St. Pete has good chance at being at higher pop (two oasis + corn(?)) than Moscow. According to Sulla, that will increase the chance of founding the religion, given no third city with no religion is existing.

Here's situation :
Rossie settled city on river about 3-4 turns ago, blocking us from the spots north of japan

Judaism is 1 turn away. So we still have that spot 1NW of the northern phants, which seems very strong for a financial AI
If I switch to judaism right away, we should get it in StPet which is 3 pop now while our capital is still at size 1

An alternative would be to go east of both japan and America and play choking from the other side

We get food and marble, desert and jungle. But this means our third city would be surrounded with three civs (Mongolia is farther away east). With the variant forbidding us to go there without open borders, it is risky if some of the nuts goes berserk and declares war.

I missed the corn in StPet and hence researched AH while I should have started with agri to get the discount. We should have both of them though when the couple workers are done

Would finish this tomorrow once we decide about where to settle that third city

I don't think the grass hill claims a fish (unless it is 2S of the hill). I believe the fish we know about requires settling on the blue circle (plains) to claim.

Pros of the grass hill W of the 'phant: Pressure Kyoto at 150 culture, +25% defense during the inevitable attack. If it does have a fish it is the better site.

Pro of the tile NW of the 'phant: I don't think there is a fish 2S of the grass hill. Pressure both Kyoto and the American city at 750 culture. Otherwise I think we'll have a difficult time pressuring the 2nd American city from the west due to the utter lack of food in the surrounding terrain.

Either way I think we should found Judaism in the 3rd city, not St. Pete.

Fish is 2W,1S of northern hill. We can steal corn, 2 phants and a hill from Kyoto. I like it

There's a decent solution to the New York problem I think, we can found at yellow circle now and red circle later to put 4th ring pressure on both Washington and NY (and push the 4th religion there via Oracle/prophet)

This pressures both Toku and Roosevelt, and claims a lot of land with relatively few cities, which is good for maintenance (speaking of which I think our 2nd and 3rd cities are natural production cities and therefore Moscow should be a cottage city as we need some to pay for maintenance)

I reckon we should go for Stonehenge and Oracle in cities 2 and 3 quickly, what do you guys think?

What I would do:

1. Found city on yellow dot (yes, I changed my mind).

2. Build a Barracks at the 3rd city IMMEDIATELY.

3. Train 5-10 warriors total (assuming you are not going for Archery early).

Definitely yellow dot and found Judaism there. It'll also have to build its own fishing boat before the Oracle (which we don't have the tech for yet). It doesn't really need a worker since Toku has already Camped the Ivories for us. :)

Another piece to the New York problem, if we can reach it:

May require Open Borders with Rosey to get there as yellow dot won't open a lane across all of Kyoto's territory to the N until 7500 culture. That spot should be available for a while longer, but will also likely be in the middle of multiple enemy cities. We can definitely found red dot.

Agree with Stonehenge in St. Petes, but it needs a worker beforehand or it won't have any production. May be best served to build two workers in Moscow and run the first to St. Pete as I expect someone will have already started the 'Henge. I would expect to have to whip Stonehenge to completion so BW is a good next tech.

We may like to cottage Moscow, but it also needs to produce military for the empire. Since no one has seige weapons we can survive with unpromoted troops hiding behind 40% cultural defenses for a while.

Yellow dot gets my vote as well.
edit: If we go with open borders to the AIs we risk spreading religions there eventually, increasing their culture output.

Galileo - actually you posted 3E1N :p

I think we can reasonably delay open borders until we need them to place cities behind the America-Japan frontline. There is a lot of space to claim in the west too and we need to build up our economy to support more cities.

I checked Toku whereabouts. He settled his second city on the coast apparently

01-1.jpg

Judaism founded like expected in our yellow dot city

02-1.jpg

AH finished. The only visible horsies are west of Washington

03-1.jpg

Roosie may be tempted to settle there for his third city since there is corn, horses and a lake for fresh water. Don't know if we should block him right away or look to the far west first

Workers are due in 3 and 4 turns from StPet and Moscow respectively. Agri due in 2 turns

StPet can start stonehenge. The capital doesn't need culture so it can be kept as settler spam center. NovGorod is building a workboat, and should steal both phants from Kyoto in 4-5 turns. That would give enough production to build a wonder here too
