RBC - 14D Conquistadores!

Background: Reviewing save, I see that we can get 15 gold from a few folks if we get in a pinch, but we would have to give up tech, so its not worth it unless we get desperate. We’re down Magnetism to most of the other European powers, probably due to our 40% research. We have a sizable VP lead (we have 2545 VP, next most is Portugal at 750 VP). Taking out the Maya looks easy, and they have to traverse directly over our grounds to expand. Besides the Maya, we’re going to have to hunt down either all the Iroquois or all the Inca. The Iroquois have 3 cities right now (to the Inca’s 4), so they should be the easiest target right now. Do I go after them now before they spread? I decide that has to be the plan. We’ll settle Cuba and then use it as a base to wipe out the Iroquois. We may need more Conquistadors to speed into the interior of North America. We’ll fight a holding action against the Maya, declaring war on them if they pass through our Central American territory.

1520 AD (Inherited turn): I move some the Caravels near Cuba toward home; everyone else had already moved.

IBT: Iroquois found a fourth city in Georgia. See they are spreading! We’ll take this one down first, being near our Cuban holdings. I’m going to leave a Caravel in the Caribbean to help with this.

1521 AD (Turn 1): Wipe out the Caribe natives on Cuba. Settle one of the two cities we’ll have there. Send a Conquistador north from Mexico toward the Iroquois. I’ll leave the slower MDI down “south of the border” to watch the Maya. I boost Science to 60%, dropping Colonization from 15 turns down to 10. Once we can “see” the Tobacco, we can get going on making some Cuban cigars!

IBT: Golden Age ends. That means Colonization will take longer.

1522 AD (Turn 2): Seville: Conquistador->Conquistador. Dias voyage produces a Colonist. Santo Domingo: Pikeman->Worker (need him in Cuba). Copernicus is trying to do his observing from Marseille (good - keep the French busy building wonders). Magellan’s is the only wonder of great interest to us, but everyone else has already started it and we don’t even have Magnetism yet. We’ll skip it this game. Sell WM to folks, getting 41 gold + 2gpt (from France) total. I ship Code of the Laws to the Inca (since they aren’t one of our targets) to get their map of S. America to sell to everyone else. Seems that map alone was worth 13 gold on the European market this turn. Send out two new loaded Caravels from Spain. They are headed for the Carolinas. First Caravel from Cuba reaches the Iroquois city in the Georgias. We’ll declare next turn. Conquistador from Mexico will patrol the Great Plains to pick off any Iroquois settlers wandering west.

IBT: A caravel from the Cherokee Indian branch of the Pirates of the Caribbean attacks our initial assault force off Georgia. Luckily the Cherokee don’t seem to know anything about fighting at sea. Lisbon goes into unrest.

1523 (Turn 3): We declare on the Iroquois and take out one of their spearmen. Luckily our second attack boat has just enough movement to get offshore here. City falls and MDI promotes to Elite. We’ll load him back up and go for their next city up the coast.

IBT: Leonardo’s completes in Paris. English and Dutch are building Magellan’s and Copernicus’s.

1524 (Turn 4): Find a English Carrack parked off the Chesapeake near the next Iroquois city. Hopefully not up to anything. Unload a Pikeman in the Carolinas. He’ll wait for the Colonist on its way. I take a risk and use the Conquistador in Illinois to attack the Iroquois city there. Get very lucky; he is redlined but wins. A settler was in that city waiting to move out. Iroquois down to 2 known cities!

IBT: English complete Copernicus’s. Did they get a Scientific Leader? A Maya settler is headed north. Folks we’re about to be at war with two native civs at once. We’ll try and wall these guys off with Workers and see if that works for a while.

1525 (Turn 5): Niagra “falls” to our MDI. Too bad the last Iroquois city isn’t coastal!

1526 (Turn 6): Madrid: Conquistador->University (need more research!). We settle Tortuga in the Carolinas. 5 units with 4 attack land next to Iroquois capital.

10 turns to Colonization.

IBT: Mounted Warrior takes out our Conquistador near the Iroquois capital. At least this distracted him from garrisoning inside the city.

1527 (Turn 7): First two attacks on Salamanca take out Spears. Only an Archer defending now. I’ll attack with the Elite MDI, though he is down in HP. He and another die to the damn archer, but our fifth attacker (an MDI) takes the city. Drat there is another Iroquois city that just sprang up out west!

That one is going to be a bear to get to with only 2 Conquistadors (both injured) in North America. A third will reach the Carolinas in 3 turns. The Maya defense line is a bit ridiculous, but working so far.

IBT: Swap territory maps with the Maya to maintain good will. Renew the peace treaty with Portugal.

1528 (Turn 8): Swap our 2nd extra Iron to the Portuguese for WM + 60 gold. They’ve explored down to Tierra del Fuego. We then earn about 60 more gold selling this map on to others. I can take a 1 Conquistador shot at the Iroquois capital this turn. Is it worth it? No reinforcements coming for at least 4 turns, so I decide to try since the capital is on Grassland. Sadly, we die!

IBT: Aruac raiding party kills two of our Workers near Santo Domingo that were about to be shipped to Cuba. Will have to find slave labor for the plantations somewhere else.

1529 (Turn 9): Harbor completes in the Canary Islands. That’s an extra Wines to shop. Switch Madrid to a Conquistador and rush one in Lisbon so we can ship 3 to North America next turn. We can get Protestantism for Horses from the Netherlands. No thanks; no heresy allowed here in the Hapsburg empire of Charles V!

1530 (Turn 10): Conquistadors, an Explorer, and a Colonist complete. All headed to North America for now. Switch to MDI builds (to use against the Maya for our final conquest).

Recommendations:
1) Wait until the ship with 3 Conquistadors arrives in the New World before attacking the Iroquois capital. We should have 5 Conquistadors and an MDI to take it out. I’d just patrol and make sure they don’t produce any more settlers with the Conquistador already on the scene.
2) Ship all excess MDI to Central America. All of the Maya cities are coastal (one on the Pacific), so we should be able to get to them all with amphibious attacks.
3) We’re way ahead of everyone on the Power graph. France is second. Be wary of Francis I and remember to keep the Netherlands happy; we have that rule that we have to go to war and conquer them if they declare on us.
4) Colonization in 5 turns. I have a worker building in Cuba and one about to complete in Venezuela that can help us start hooking up treasures.

Merepatra (up next) might be able to take out both the Iroquois and Maya if she's lucky. I don't think either will last 20 more turns.

One other thing to consider. When we get Colonization, we can probably trade it with others to get Magnetism (and Gunpowder?). Probably a good idea though it will speed up how quickly other nations start to get treasures.

However, remember the style rule that says we want to eliminate all Protestant governments from Europe if possible (accepting the Netherlands, our colony). England likes to go Protestant, so keep that in mind when you do this trading. If you give tech to England, you are probably giving it to a future war opponent.

Right now only the Netherlands have Protestantism. I have no idea if they've switched to it yet (probably not).

1531 - Changed Madrid to producing pikeman as it was revolting with only 1 pikeman and it also seemed too vulnerable to France. Next couple of turns really just waiting for Conquistadors to arrive in North America.

1533 – Iroquois send out an archer which we kill with a Conquistador, they also have 2 mounted warriors out looking for targets, those we just try to avoid while we wait for the reinforcements to arrive.

1535 – The 2 mounted warriors attack our MI fortified on a hill, one mounted warrior dies, the other is injured and retreats to their city. Our Conquistadors are all now within striking distance of the capital so we attack. We have a decisive victory over their 2 spearmen and 1 injured mounted warrior and the city is destroyed.

We now have finished researching Colonization. We trade it to the Netherlands for both Gunpowder and Magnetism. We then trade it to Portugal for 140 gold and 53 gpt and world map, and then France for 99 gold and 27 gpt and world map. We are now researching Metallurgy in 16 turns.

Tortuga changes to building a Tobacco Plantation which will be finished in 3 turns, and Veracruz to a Sugar Plantation which will take 8 turns. We should be able to start building more Plantations soon. A new city. San Miguel, is founded between Salamanca and Tortuga where there is tobacco.

1536 - I also use some of our new wealth to upgrade some Caravels to Carracks.

1537 – Our Conquistadors head towards Tenochtitlan in preparation for our eventual war against the Mayans. They destroy a couple of barb camps on the way giving us some extra cash.

1538 – Colonist produced by Diaz Voyage and another in Seville. Send 1 to settle tobacco below Tortuga and another towards tobacco island near Cartagena.

1539 – Canary Islands produce another colonist and I send them towards yet more tobacco in North America. France has sent out a couple of boats recently that I suspect are heading to some of the same places. France has also suspiciously moved a number of troops into Marseille.

1540 – France settles on the tobacco island before us so I move to another island with sugar instead.

Notes for next player

We should be in a position to attack the Mayans soon. Attacking with MI’s from the sea and the Conquistadors by land seems to be the way to go, I have a 2nd ship headed towards Tenochtitlan to pick up more MI’s with this in mind.
We will see our first treasure in Tortuga towards the end of the next 10 turns, before long we should be pushing treasures out quickly all over, we might need a few more ships and pikemen just to carry them.

Ready for the next player to "Got it!" here.

HotRod? Cuivienen? Who is still around?

If you need another player, I would be more than willing.
I enjoy your historical variant games Gobi.

IHT: Get Protestantism from England for 12 gold. (Sorry Gobi, but VP are VP, we just can't go into it.) Sell Colonization to England for WM, 46 gold and 9gpt. Rush rax in Panama City. Swap Seville to FP. Swap Barcelona to Rax, Swap Madrid to Colossuem.
IBT: Maya send out a slave pair.
Turn 1: Madrid Col to MDI. Panama Rax to Tobacco. Build Embassy in Citzen Icha for 27 gold. They have 7 units, and only a granary and temple!! (Cash problems?)
get their 7 gold for storytelling. Declare War. Vet Conq captures slaves. Amphib Palnque. Take city with 2 promotions and a loss of a reg MDI. A reg conq captures another slave pair. Conqs are really cool here, especially when they amphib. Trade WM. (every turn) Clear a barb camp in Florida, found St. Augustine.
IBT: France demands horses, since this is DG they get them. English start Luthers.
Turn 2: Cartenga temple to worker. Tortuga temple to court. Found Mexico city, temple. Found Los Angelas, tobacco.
Shuffle troops.
IBT: Mayans send out 1 archer against us.
Turn 3: Madrid MDI to MDI. Veracruz sugar to worker. Take Yaxchilian no losses, promote a reg conq versus the offending archer. Rush a harbor in Teothicuan.
IBT: Nada.
Turn 4: Granada Pike to Pike. Teothicuan harbor to temple. Upgrad an explorer. Start Assualt on CI.
Elite MDI beats vet spear
reg MDI loses to vet spear.
reg conq beats vet spear
elite conq beats reg spear
vet conq beats reg javelin
vet conq retreats
reg conq beats reg javelin
IBT: not much
Turn 5: Madrid MDI to MDI. CI gets assualted again.
Vet MDI beats reg javelin
vet conq beats reg javelin and takes city.
IBT: Nothing
Turn 6: Barcelona Rax to MDI. Oporto Cathedral to MDI. Get treasure and colonists. Move troops like crazy, and start to move to modern Brazil to found new cities. Moving more troops to Americas.
IBT: Maya counter with archer.
Turn 7: Cagliari pike to carrack, sell courthouse in cagliari as it is 1 spt. Madrid MDI to MDI. Promote a conq to vet against mayan archer. Disperse a barb camp. Upgrade caravel. Assualt Tikal, take from 3 units with no losses.
IBT: Defeat a barb archer promoting a conq to elite.
turn 8: Lisbon pike to pike. Veracruz, worker to harbor. Tortuga courthouse to harbor. Take Copan from 2 troops, losing a conq. The weak Maya are now history.
IBT: London finishes Magellans.
Turn 9: Metallurgy comes in, Mining in 11. Madrid MDI to MDI. Granada pike to MDI. Cartenga Worker to Harbor. Wines to England for 39 gold, 1 gpt and WM.
IBT: Not much
Turn 10: Canary temple to carrack. Oporto MDI to MDI. France has Naval Ordanance but will not part with it. No units moved.

There is Peace with Portugal for 5 more turns, and then I would take all their Islands, but Leave Cueto and the rest of their African Holdings. This will give us nice Privateer Bases and make them run a guantlet to return treasure. Some city builds need to be optomized.
The Conquistador is a very powerful unit in this scenario. Use them liberally. We are strong compared to everyone but France whom we are average compared to. A straight treasure grab build can win this, but there isn't as much fun in that as smacking around the AI. There are probably 15 turns to privateers, so be careful with ships on the ocean.

Current Victory Points are:
Spain 5195
England 1660
France 1480
Portugal 1080
Netherlands 830

I totally agree that we don't win this one by sitting around waiting for the treasures to return. We are the Conquistadores! So this is when we have to start thinking about the religious war in Europe. The scurge of Protestantism has infected all the nations now, even my trusted monk-advisor romeo has been tempted by its heretical teachings!

So we need to start watching to see if any of our fellow Europeans are switching their country over to Protestantism. If so, the scenario rules say we must make them our next target. With that in mind, I will not pursue romeo's plan against the Portuguese. We're trying to eliminate Protestantism in Europe ... and we've already knocked them out of Europe!

France is probably the main target; England's colonial holdings are pathetic. But we'll act based on investigating foreign cities to check the current government. Will be costly; we'll need some New World gold just to finance this spying!

(P.S. Won't be playing today, so everyone has time to chime in with suggestions).

Based on my turns only the Dutch and the English were in Protestantism. I believe that the French and Portugese are unable to go into Protestantism. One of the main reasons for getting protestantism is to know thine enemy.
We cannot Declare on the Dutch, so that makes it more challenging to rid the world of the followers of Luther. We could let them get a Tech and then try and get them to declare on us through bad espionage techniques.
I would currently vote for hitting the Portugese in ~5 turns and then smiting the Inca. After that we can ally with our Catholic French Brothers and make the English suffer. I signed some gpt deals with England so we want to be careful about our reputation.
Note: Explorers can become conquistadors for 150 gold. You can then have them barb farm the great American expanses.
Good luck next player. (Hotrod?)

Background: 1550 AD. Charles V has been ruling his combined empire of Spanish/Austrian/Dutch/German/Burgundian possessions for 31 years. He has faced major challenges from the Ottomans and the new scourge called Protestantism. He is a tired man, and will soon be ready to turn this vast empire over to his son Philip. However, for a little while yet, he is master of the largest empire yet seen on earth. How will he finish out his glorious reign?

Government check: England and Netherlands are Protestant Monarchies. Luther’s teachings have spilled across the Rhine and then sailed north across the Channel. We can’t attack our Dutch provinces directly; in fact, I’d like to strengthen our diplomatic ties there. But we can start thinking about what it might take to send an Armada against England.

Technology check: 10 turns to Mining, then Naval Ordnance and Piracy to clear the Age of Exploration tree. I think we can skip Professional Armies (the 2.3.1 Swiss pikeman isn’t that much more useful than the standard 1.3.1 pike) and Fortification (only one of our cities is size 6 or less to benefit from a Trace Italienne). Counter Reformation as our first research item in the next area would fit nicely style-wise. Anyway, now that we’ve knocked out our 3 native civs, I’m going to try to get home more treasures so we can push the research harder. Might work some tech trades too.

Trading check:
Netherlands – We’re up Metallurgy
England – We’re up Metallurgy
Portugal – We’re up Iron, Saltpeter, and Metallurgy
France – We’re up Metallurgy; they are up Naval Ordnance. Francis won’t trade it to us anyway.
Inca – Offer 30 gold for either Map Making or Construction; the two techs they need to leave the Classic Age. Probably not enough gold yet to be of interest.

New World plan:
I’m going to focus on hooking up treasures, building harbors, and settling in the southern and southwestern US. That area is wide open still. I’ll leave the Inca alone. There’s plenty of room in Central and North America for now. I’ll leave the Conquistadors over here for better movement; I’m going to start migrating the MDI back to Europe. I’ll collect them in Oporto, our base for our growing Armada.

Turn 1 (1550 AD): MM cities, hiring a bunch of scientists in corrupt New World cities. I get Mining down to 8 turns that way. Switch a few of the New World cities to building Colonists and Workers. Switch Seville to Bank. It is already low in corruption. I’d rather have the Colonial Capital over in the New World. Tortuga (in the Carolinas) is doing 10 spt, I think we can build it there. Upgrade a Trebuchet to a Cannon.

Turn 2 (1551 AD): Madrid: MDI->University. San Miguel: Tobacco Plantation->Worker. The Dutch pick up Naval Ordnance. I’d rather make the swap for Metallurgy with them than France. I get them to throw in their WM and 25 gold. I then send them our WM as a gesture of good will. Time to start building some Frigates! Portugal is hurting without either Iron or Saltpeter. We can get money from them for resources any time we want. That’s why I don’t want to attack them. They can help finance our wars with England and/or France. We give Elizabeth a hard time about having her English settlers tromping over our lands in the New World (in Ontario, Canada).

Turn 3 (1552 AD): Tenochtitlan: Colonist->Sugar Pl. Santo Domingo: Pikeman->Worker. St Augustine: Worker->Harbor. Mexico City: Worker->Colonist. We return our first treasure!

FirstTreasure.JPG

Ask Elizabeth’s ship to stop parking off the coast of New England. She complies there too.

IBT: Gain 22 gold from a WM swap with the Inca. First sugar treasure from Cuba.

Turn 4 (1553 AD): Need more garrison troops in the New World. We have a bunch of Conquistadors on garrison duty. More pikes might have to wait until our initial set of Frigates are done though. Those will be key versus England.

IBT: Colonist produced in Lisbon. Teotihuacan: Worker->Worker. Tortuga: Harbor->Colonial Capital (16 turns). Tortuga produces a Tobacco treasure. One of our MDI headed back to Spain can carry it. England has Professional Armies! Very interesting. Inca still haven’t researched Map Making or Construction.

IBT: I agree to a Right of Passage with Portugal. Tired of trying to sail around Madeira. They are practically a satellite nation of ours anyway.

Turn 5 (1554 AD): Barcelona: Frigate->Frigate. Seville: Bank->Frigate. The bank was key! Mining has dropped to just 3 turns. Seville is a powerhouse. Oporto: Frigate->Frigate. Trying to build enough Frigates to rule the seas against England. Take our new Oporto-based Frigate for a spin toward England … and run into an English Frigate. Maybe this won’t be so easy! Two more treasures will arrive home in 3 turns. That’s good; we’re researching heavily enough we’ll be out of money by then.

Posting this mid-game report now. Will play the other 5 turns later today or tomorrow.

A Bank in Seville?? I thought it was building the Colonial Capitol? Who is building our Forbidden Palace now? Tortuga might be a good place eventually as well, due to its high shield production and good growth potential.

Tortuga it is. Look just above. Colonial Capital will be in place there in 15 turns.

The bank in Seville was worth something like 15 gpt. Too good to pass up.
