RBC13H - Middle Ages - Angry Abbasids (Demigod)

Btw. got it. May or may not get to it tonight as I need to finsih my turn for the Franks first. If I don't get to it tonight I'll get it doen tomorrow.

Feel free to make comments and suggestions to your heart's content.

Edit: Where did you have in mind for the Settlers? I think the Southern one move 1 SE on the river? Unless you want the opportunity to share the wheat? Second in the fog to the N?

I was thinking the southern one would go either 1 SE or 1 E.

For the northern one either where he stands (he's under the warrior) or 1 N.

I think 1 SE for the southern one, and 1 N for the northern one would be best. The northern one could settle on the spot, but it wouldn't pull in very many shields, so it'd be better one north (maybe we can even get a couple 2-turn worker factories if there are enough shields and floodplains).

We can go with a relatively tight build. We need it on the river (paramount concern). (Sorry for stating the blindingly obvious!)
:crazyeye:

I know these guys don't seem to be the most exciting Civ to play (compared with some of the action going on in the other threads!) But if/when the Byzantines ever invade, things will get interesting very quickly. A friend of mine played this once and said that in a single turn about a third of the way through the game, the Bizzies declared war and invaded with a stack of 25 horses and landed a force of 8 units right next to Jerusalem on the same turn! :eek:

I figured it was going to be something like that. This is our opportunity to prepare before the storm hits. If it isn't the Byzantines, it will be someone else, but figure it will be someone.

Peace and prosperity settled over the land as the son of a unpreposessing minor noble was elected to be Caliph in the years 937 to 957, it was a compromise solution as the the previous Caliph died with no heirs and Kabuki was the only one choice that no-one actively hated.

Wow! I feel practically naked. And seeing barbs I wish I had our trusty Ansars a bit closer to home and the funny thing is... I'm going to make it worse not better. Our strength lies in having a relatively clear back area that can be quite productive, which of course means it needs to be settled... and quickly. And we need Iron.

In any case off I go:

IHT - 927 AD
We are behind on tech, we have no Iron, we have a huge sum of gold and we have no means of applying pointy stick teching... We can however produce a large number of settlers and workers...

Bagdad -> Settler

IBT - Zzzz

1 - 930 AD
Antioch: Barracks -> Settler
Damascus: Warrior -> Settler

Settlers moved and our southern settler ends up next to a barb... nothing to do but cry...

IBT - Settler dies.

2 - 933 AD
Alexandria: Settler -> Settler

Sword vs. Barb camp - we win are promoted and get 25g

Found Sidon where it will get the one forest missed in our core.

IBT - ZZZZzzz

3 - 936 AD

Bagdad is MMd so that it will grow and produce settler in 3.

IBT - Zip

4 - 939 AD
Sword vs. Barb near Bagdad - We win.

IBT - Zip

5 - 942 AD
Umm... Nothing to report sir...

IBT - Even less

6 - 945 AD
Jerusalem: Barracks -> Spear
Antioch: Settler -> Spear
Bagdad: Settler -> Settler

Contact Danes

IBT - Nothing

7 - 948 AD
Damascus: Settler -> War
Alexandria: Settler -> Spear

Ansar vs. Barb Camp 25g

Contact: Germans, Celts and Castilians

IBT - Spot a Norwegian ship

8 - 951 AD
Contact Norway
SW vs. Barb Camp we win -1 hp and 25g

IBT - Zilch

9 - 954 AD
Damascus: Warrior -> Settler
Tyre: Barracks -> Spear

Contact Franks

IBT - Nothing.

10 - 957 AD
Jerusalem: Spear -> Spear
Antioch: Spear -> Settler
Sidon: Worker -> Warrior

Found Mosul near Iron set to Barracks.

Notes:
- Left almost all units unmoved.
- I did check for trades every turn, but it did not seem to ever be worth it to go for HBR or workers. We should have HBR soon, and we have more than enough cash to buy basic parity right away so no worries there. We should also wait before buying into anything until we have contact with the Swedes and English.
- I think it is time to bring home units, although that will require a bit of co-ordination...
- There are four settlers out and about, and three more in the pipeline. Here are my tentative ideas for them (please critique):

South and West of Jerusalem:

Near Baghdad:

In the north - the area where I had planned to settle got poached, but I think we need to settle in that area (near Nicocea).

And so ended the quiet, but prosperous reign of Kabuki - the Quiet Caliph.

To take the reign

Good turns :goodjob:

Preturn: MM Jerusalem to shave a turn off the spear build. Curraghs sail around some more, Ansars explore, Caliph starts to loop back through Turkish lands on his way home.

IBT: Osman demands we remove our poor Caliph. That heathen.
Sword kill Parthian warrior.

1) Found Basra on the east side of the Sinai pennisula. Starts worker. Found Medina in the middle of the Sinai. Starts warrior.

2) Horseback Riding comes in, start Castle Building. Bagdad builds settler, starts another. Switch Sidon from sword to barracks. Found Allepo, starts worker. Diplo check: No one has Castle Building, and only the Bulgars do not have Horseback riding. Sell it to them for all their gold (114). The best we can do with our own research is 31 turns @ 50 percent science. I decide to keep running min sci; someone HAS to research it soon!:cool:

IBT: Turks kick out our Caliph, Celts ask our dingy to leave their waters.

3). Jerusalem builds spear, starts a worker. I think it can reach 10spt if we mine something. Alexandria builds spear, starts another. Tyre builds spear, starts Horse.

4). Buy a worker from the Fatmids for 120 gold. Since we haven't bought workers from everyone, I think this is ok, right? Found Hattin, near Nicomedia. Starts Temple.

5.) Jerusalem builds worker, starts settler. Antioch builds settler, starts another. Damascus builds settler, starts spear. Our Curragh goes down in a storm off Gibralter (sorry) Our other curragh meets Mathilda of the English. She has 3 gold and a very pasty complextion. Found Acre in Mesopotamia, right next to a barb camp with a Keshik on top.

IBT: Barbs steal 100 gold.

Turn 6: Medina builds warrior, starts temple.

Turn 7: Sword kiills Keshik south of Basra.

IBT: Byz troops are spotted moving south. Byz archer appears north of Sidon.

Turn 8: The Byzintines are making aggressive moves and we need a defender in Sidon. Bagdaddoes not have a barracks, so I will rushbuy one next turn, depending on what the Byz do.

IBT: The Franks, at least, must have got castle building, because they start on the Holy Roman Empire and we recieve word of a massive barbarian uprising near Allepo.

Turn 9: Jerusalem builds settler, starts Library. Other cities start military. A settler gets the pleasure of finding the uprising camp, which has 8 keshiks in it. Found Gaza rather than lose the settler. Our curragh meets a swede longship. Buy castle building from Joan for 717 gold and 4 gpt. Start on Jihad. We cannot get it any faster than 40 turns right now.

IBT: No fewer than 16 Keshiks sack our cities; but since both cities they hit were size 1 and we have no gold they just destroyed works in progress (I'll trade 4 turns spent on a worker to get rid of that many keshiks)

Turn 10: Allepo riots (it is not connected) and it hires a scientest. Science set to zero. 2 Settlers left with mp in Bagdad for the next leader to place. We have another 1 tile south of Damascus, but he did move. No great deals for selling Castle building available, although we could get all of the Burgundians +/- 214 gold and a worker if we want.

Gaaahhh! There are barbs everywhere! Oh. Hold it. That's our color. :blush: Remind to never play a white-color civ again. The ingrained dislike of white-toga troops is too much for me. ;)
Actually, there *ARE* a buttload of true (grey) Barbs, and they appear to be setting their sights on us. Move a couple of settlers and change a couple of build orders towards more settlers.

990 (1) 6 Keshik barbs move to the north towards the Byzantines. *whew*.
Basra (worker-worker). Sell Castle Building to the Burgundians and Kievian Rus for all the have. Everybody else is pretty poor. Trying to get our Ansars home to help kill the barbs.

993 (2) All the Christian nations are building HRE. See some Keshiks kill some Bizzie horses. :goodjob:

996 (3) Jerusalem (Settler->Settler) Aleppo (Warrior->Worker). Disperse a Barb camp and kill a seperate barb Warrior with no casualties.

999 (4) Baghdad (Settler->Settler) Tyre (Horseman->Horseman) Mosul Temple->Barracks) Samaria is founded on the Tigris River. Disperse another Barb camp with a swordsman.

1002 (5) Antioch (Horseman->Horseman) Damascus (Horseman->Horseman) New Damascus founded.

1005 (6) Disperse another Barb camp. (A good source of income!) Establish an Embassy with the Turks (If we are going to be stealing something, it will most likely be from them). The city of Ghuzz *heh!* is pop 7, all possible infrastructure built, but no luxes or resources hooked up. Sell Castle Building around to 3-4 Civs at 70-95 gold each. Not much, but the AIs will sell it around for that price pretty soon also.

1008 (7) Our brave horseman holds off 2 Keshiks, but falls to a third. :( Jerusalem (Settler->Spearman) Sidon (Barracks->Worker) Our last king makes it home safely!

1011 (8) 3 Keshik kill themselves against our sword and promote him to Elite. That just about takes care of the "Barbarian Upraising" hordes. (finally!) Found New Jerusalem in the North and bring Spices online. Reduce Lux to 0%.

1014 (9) Antioch (Horseman->Horseman) Damascus (Horseman->Horseman) Tyre (Horseman->Horseman) Sidon (Worker->Worker) Medina (Temple->Worker) Gaza(Worker->Worker). One finally returned Ansar Warrior disperses a Barb camp and is within our territory for the first time in over 100 years.

1017 (10) Jerusalem (Spear->Library) Baghdad (Settler->Settler) Our Alexandria - Jerusalem road is established, and our empire is happy as we have all 4 possible luxes to most of our cities now. Buy a worker off the Bulgars.

We are still on a minimum science run towards Jihad (29 turns). All the good city-sites are gone, but we need to do fill-ins on the plains and near the deserts to get our city-count up and unit-costs down. The rest of the world is going to come our way very soon now that the huge expanses in "Russia" is just about filled up, so let's gnab territory now. We've got lots of money, but I haven't been able to buy any workers (none available). As always, we need more workers...

There is one settler North of Aleppo who should probably settle there next turn. The settler north of him ought to continue on past the hills to settle. The settler SE of Jerusalem is heading for some spot East of Basra (or Southeast of Basra). The settler in Gaza was heading up the road, and then NW somewhere in the hills to seal off our northern boundaries. Our REX phase is almost over, but there is probably 5 more cities we could place along the edges here and there. (SE of Alexandria is one, SE of Acre is another) We can trade Spices to the Byzantines, but it is not at full price yet. Our last Ansar is stuck in Byzantium-land. We may need and ROP to bring him home, but that will speed Bizzie settlers through our land which is what we don't want right now!

I got it. Could someone post a screenshot too? It's hard to see what's going on without pictures (I can't b/c my paint program on my laptop only saves as .bmp's). Also, have we stolen Norse Tradition yet? It may be worth getting since seafaring is so cheap and Smithing will give us a huge production boost.

Just our lands in general, haven't seen them in a while. It doesn't matter so much now since I'll be playing the game soon, but it helps us see our progress and is helpful to the lurkers.

Please skip me.

I'm swamped with schoolwork and won't be able to finish this any time soon.

Yom, it is going to take me a full 48 hours to play, so if you want to still take it please do.

No, you should take it, there's no way I can get it before tomorrow at earliest.

Kabuki, That would work for me. I still have the Gregarious Germans to play.
