I hope the Decomposing Horse still remembers about this SG! ;)

Well, Deceased Horse hasn't even logged onto the site in almost 3 days. I will give him 12 more hours and then take it myself, I suppose. (In case he is a non-weekender forum checker). Is this game cursed?

Let's hope not. I think this one is going to become very exciting very soon. All those Christians are going to be knocking on our gates very soon.

Looks like the rotting stallion is missing in action. :(

Swap Alexandria to a settler. There is a site on the edge of the map SE of Alexandria that can become quite productive.

1080 (1) Turks settle a city in our far SE on the edge of map. :mad: New Basra founded in the Sanai desert. We are in a phoney war with Burgandy and Kievian Rus, both of which won't take peace straight across. We are down at least Code of Laws, Jihad, and Early Siegcraft, all of which are too expensive to buy.

1083 (2) Bulgars and Byzantines make peace. What we really need to do is get the Turks and Byzantines at each others throats somehow. The Turks are getting pretty darn powerful.

1086 (3) The price of Smithing isn't going down. I finally buy it from Sweden for 264 gold. The Burgundians finally drop off a unit on our shores near Jerusalem. I figure it is now is a good time for a Golden Age, as we can build our Blacksmiths faster. Change many cities over to Blacksmiths.
RBC13Hpic006.jpg

Our Ansar Warrior easily defeats the Burgandy Sword, and out gpt goes up to 136/turn New Medina founded.

1089 (4) Time to catch up in tech. Buy Early Siegecraft from the Byzantines for 336 gold and 41gpt. (Maybe they won't attack us for 20 turns!) Early Siegecraft to Bulgars for Code of Laws and a Slave. Code of Laws to Sweden for 93 gold. Code of Laws to Castille for 13 gold and 8 gpt. Make straight Peace to the Keivian Rus on the strength of our large economy. Code of Laws to the Caliphate for 43 gold. And everyone else is pretty broke (especially those Christian countries!)

1092 (5) The Byzantines start the Tapestry. They and the Turks are into the next age. Damascus finishes Blacksmith and starts on the Palace prebuild for the Tapestry. At 30 spt, we have a shot at it still.
We are now down Medieval Combat and Jihad (but is due in 5)

1095 (6) All is quiet.

1098 (7) Aleppo founded in the South.

1101 (8) New Hatin and New Acre are founded along the Southern border. This probably concludes our peaceful settlements. We are only over our Unit support by 16 units so that's pretty good. There is only one more spot in the extreme SE corner of the map. We might just settle there just to avoid the hassle of other spear/settlers combos traipsing through our lands.

1104 (9) We learn Jihad. Assassination started on yet another 40 turn bid, as we will need all our money for tech buys/steals. (Especially with map-making coming up.)

1107 (10) Turks start the Domesday Book. Renegotiate Spice deal with Byzantium for 65 gold and 16 gpt. Trade Early Siege to England for 27 gold and 16 gpt. I do a careful steal of Med. Combat from the Turks --- And succeed! Damascus changed over to the Bayeux Tapestry, due in 15 turns. As soon as a couple of more Town halls complete, we could probably switch over Jerusalem to Domesday Book. We may have a shot at that. I have mostly been building Smiths and Town Halls. We basically need to grow right now, and get our Population up and more tiles developed. Sometime soon, Mapmaking should become available. Keep checking Byz/Turks every turn. As soon as it comes available, try to get it and do some serious trading around to get lots of cash. (We could research it ourselves in 7 turns, but I figure the Byz/Turks will get it any turn.) We are making over 155 gpt.

Not so angry Abbasids in the Golden Age?

Nice turns RJ. All still seems to be quiet. How are our VPs coming along?

The only question in my mind is wonders. Which ones do we want? Bayeux is nice, but hardly critical our key military production centers already have barracks. Robin Hood is good, as is Magna Carta. Doomsday book should be quite useful especially with the focus on cash for steals that we have. OTher than that? Minor wonders?

Questions, comments, suggestions?

Sir Bugsy I believe you are up.

I've got it, although it is second on the to-do list..

Playing now. Expect results by evening Pacific Time.

Sorry, no fancy write up this time. Figured I was late enough with this game.

Pre-flight – 1107 AD – We are in third place in VP totals behind Sweden and Byzantines.

Mosul is very corrupt. I swap it over to a town hall to hopefully improve its production.

RJ has a worker working in the extreme SE. I wonder how I’m going to get him out of there.

Cities are in great shape.

Diplo: Get a straight peace deal with Burgundy. They were flat broke so I couldn’t even sell them anything. The rest of the world is dirt poor also.

So here we go:

IBT – After about five minutes (and I have a 1.7G processor) it is finally over.
Jerusalem: Ansar Warrior => AW
Sidon: Smithy=>AW

1. 1110 AD – I’m going to start upgrading our horsemen to AWs. Two upgrades for 180G. 18 more to go.
I’ll be shuffling some troops around. I think I’m also going to strength our front line defenses.

IBT – Antioch: Town Hall=> AW
Alexandria: Town hall=> settler
New Basra riots. I hate these edge of map cities.
Burgundians start Domesday Book.

2. 1113 AD – Slow down Jerusalem’s production so I can switch it over to Domesday book next turn.
Upgrade one horse.

IBT – Tyre: town hall=> AW (switch Jerusalem over to Domesday Book and MM so it is due in 7)
New Medina: Temple=>barracks

3. 1116 AD – Upgrade two horses.

IBT – New Tyre: Temple=> barracks

4. 1119 AD – One horse upgrade.

MM Jerusalem and Damascus to get the wonders a turn earlier.

Hurry the settler in Samaria for 48G.

Sell Early Siegecraft to France for a worker and 3 gpt.

Turks have Assassination, but the price is out of range.

IBT – Antioch, Sidon: AW=>AW
Baghdad: Smithy=> AW
Samaria: settler=> Town Hall

5. 1122 AD – Two horse upgrade.
Cordova and the Byzantines have mapmaking. They both an arm and a leg for it. Cordova wants two arms.

We’re at 180 gpt. That’s two horse upgrades per turn.

IBT – Ut-oh! It is starting. Theodora demands our TM. OK.
Alexandria: Settler=>smithy
Tyre: AW=> AW
Cordovans and Bulgars start the Tapestry

6. 1125 AD – England has a few workers for sale. Sell Matilda (Matilda? I guess Elizabeth didn’t come on the scene until the late sixteenth century) Medieval Combat for two workers, 33G, and 9gpt.
The Turks now have map making.

IBT – New Baghdad: Barracks=> Town Hall
The English start the Tapestry.

7. 1128 AD – Found Bugsy Basra south of Alexandria. Start barracks.

IBT – Cordova wants to trade TMs. I’ll pass.
Antioch: AW=> AW
Gaza: Town Hall=> smithy
New Damascus, New Mosul: Smithy=> AW

8. 1131 AD - Two more horse upgrades. We have six more to go. We’re at 21 Ansars, and we’re still weak compared to most of the world.

MM Damascus to get the Tapestry in 3.

IBT – The Turks have a force of 9 spears heading south. Spears?

Jerusalem completes the Domesday Book => AW
Baghdad: AW=> Barracks (here is a :smoke: move, I should have made sure it had a barracks before building the AW)
Tyre, Sidon: AW=> AW
Only the English shift their build to the Tapestry. We’ll beat that easily.

9. 1134 AD – Upgrades are suspended until we get to 1000G in the treasury.

IBT – Medina: Library=> smithy

10. 1137 AD – I think I sent the worker in the far SE somewhere unintended with a go to order. My apologies. I haven’t figured how to handle units in the cormers on these funky maps. :confused:

After Action Report: I didn't do as much trading as I should of. I was more concerned with upgrading our forces to prepare for the onslaught. A good portion of our military has been upgraded, so that should become less of a concern. The blacksmith shops are starting to have a serious impact on production.

There is an irrigation project working towards the northeast.

Tapestry comes in next turn.

There is a settler in New Jerusalem that I was going to send to the hill three tiles NW.

Why set Baghdad to a barracks if we're due to get the tapestry next turn?
Doesn't it act as Sun Tzu's?

*Bump*

Any progress Kabuki?

@Sir Bugsy
In order to manage our units and cities on the funky Southern edge of the map, just hit the "Del" key on you numeric keypad to toggle off all onscreen boxes and buttons. Use keyboard shortcuts for worker commands, or select the city/unit with the mouse as normal. Toggle the normal stuff back on with the same Del key.

RJ - Thanks for the tip on the southern edge.

Yom - My bad on the barracks. I should have reread the civilopedia. I was thinking The Tapestry was just the Heroic Epic, but you are right.

This will be a short write-up as I have a major essay due tomorrow:

IHT – I check (almost) everything out. I switch the blatantly obvious Baghdad to a Town Hall. I forget a couple of other cities that are set to barracks (small ones – some I’ll catch later… at least one I don’t).

Thinking ahead towards tech steals I open an embassy with Cordova. Cordoba is size six, 12spt, 1 Ansar + 1 next turn, 1 King, 6 Spear and 3 Swords. It also has Palace, barracks, granary, temple, market and library.

I decide that settling the city on the hills is too risky and will leave us with another horribly exposed city. I’ll change my mind after seeing the post, and then look at it later and go back to my original decision.

IBT – Zzzzz

1 – 1140 AD
Jerusalem: Ansar -> Ansar
Antioch: Ansar -> Ansar
Damascus: Bayeux Tapestry -> Town Hall

RBC13H_1137AD_-_Bayeux_Tapestry.JPG

Sell all barracks.

Decide that a steal is due. For 884 our secret agents figure out how to Assassinate people. Set research to Medicine.

RBC13H_1140_-_Turk_Steal.JPG

Assassination sold to Cordova for Mapmaking and WM.
Then WM:
Turks: WM + 115
Byzantine: WM + 66 (and later again 41)
Fatimids: WM + 16
Franks: WM + 103
England: TM for WM + 8
Bulgars: TM for WM + 4
Castille: TM for WM + 7
Total: Complete WM and 319.

We now have 452 in the bank. Research set for Polearms at min sci so we can try a brokerage with it for Divine right and/or any other techs. We should steal into every tree for the VPs.

IBT – Lots of movement.

2 – 1143 AD
Baghdad: Town Hall -> Assassin
Tyre: Ansar -> Assassin
( I figure we want one assassin in every town to check for opposing stealth units)

Trades net us 62g.

New Tyre: Barracks -> Temple (caught that one before the barracks completed)

IBT – Zzzzz

3 – 1146
Jerusalem: Ansar -> Assassin
Damascus: Town Hall -> Spear
Mosul: Town Hall -> Spear
Basra: Blacksmith -> Spear
New Damascus: Ansar -> Town Hall
New Medina: Barracks -> Town Hall (missed that one)
New Hatin: Temple -> Spear

Trades net us ca. 28g

IBT – Turk spears SOD head home.

Golden age ends.

4 – 1149
Sidon Riots
Income 212gpt
Trade nets ca. 40g

I open an Embassy with Castille and the Kievan Rus (with an eye to steals):
Leon: 11spt – Palace and Temple – Sz 4 – 3 Lux, Iron and Quarry - 6 Spear, 4 Swords, 1 Queen.
Kiev: Sz 6 – 12spt – Iron, Tar, Quarry, No Lux – Palace, Barracks, Temple, Market, Colloseum – Producing Wealth – 4 Zerks, 8 Spear, 2 Settlers and 1 King.

Note: Steals from Castille and Kiev are much cheaper than from the Byzantine and Germany.

IBT – Zzzzz

5 - 1152 AD
Antioch: Assassin -> Assassin
Tyre: Assassin -> Assassin
Aleppo: Blacksmith -> Temple
Hatin: Blacksmith -> Town Hall

New Mosul riots.
Lux -> 10% (I’m not sure if I changed this back, so whomever is up next check it as MPs have been coming online no cities are at real risk for rioting).

Trade nets 41g

IBT – France and the Byzantine mend fences.

6 – 1155AD
Jerusalem: Assassin -> Assassin
Damascus: Assassin -> Assassin
Baghdad: Assassin -> Asssassin
Sidon: Spear -> Spear
(New?) Antioch: Town Hall -> Spear (Hmmm… my notes don’t make much sense, but I figure it should have been New Antioch not Antioch listed).

Trades net 19g

IBT – Zzzzz

7 – 1158 AD
Basra: Spear -> Spear
New Sidon: Town Hall -> Spear

Trades net 17g and the information that the Turks have Medicine. At monopoly it is nto worth it. Actually the tech isn’t really all that valuable to us period.

IBT – Byzantine and Turks go to war.

8 – 1161 AD
Sidon: Spear -> Spear

Trades net ca. 10g

IBT – Byzantine MDI defeats a Turk settler/spear team on our lands.

9 – 1164 AD
Jericho: Assassin -> Assassin
Antioch: Assassin -> Assassin
Damascus: Assassin -> Assassin
Tyre: Assassin -> Assassin

Trade nets 41g

Time for one more steal. For 760g we acquire Byzantine ingenuity from the Kievans.

RBC13H_1164AD_-_Rus_steal.JPG

We then buy Lost Roman Secrets for 12g from them as well.

Heavy Cavalry costs 960 (without haggling) at monopoly from the Byzantine.

Antioch and New Damascus are both set to Aquaducts.

IBT – Minor fighting between the Byzantine and Turks.

10 – 1167AD
Baghdad: Assassin -> Assassin
Sidon: Spear -> Spear
Aicre: Town Hall -> Blacksmith

Endnotes:
We should be able to go for another steal as soon as we are back up to 2300g. Do not go below 1000 unless it is a critical emergency as we are already over on unit support (by 33) and the economy is going well… down. A couple of deals are coming up for re-negotiation (Spice to the Byzantine is one).

There are luxuries available (Sheep from Cordova), but the trade route is risky and so I never pulled the trigger on the deals.

Our next steal should be Western Church, to open up that tree. Getting the Knight’s Templar would be fun, if not exactly necessary. Having Crusaders gives our swordsman a longer lifespan. Medicine is at the moment entirely optional and we can comfortably wait until the monopoly is broken (which will be a while). For third age techs we really want Robin Hood and Magna Carta as well as the two defensive units. We may want to start building catapults for added defense. On the Western Church tree are Manors, those and markets will make our economy go a long way.

Military priorities:
Flip defence in the two or three cities that need that. Getting assassins to all our border towns, we want to be able to see everything coming at us. This goes for all coastal towns as well – just in case they land stealth units. We are still short MPs in the interior, Sidon is on Spears just for this, and we want as many spears as possible before we acquire polearms and are out of cheap MP units.

The Save

OK, a thought from the strange mind of Bugs.

The European infidels are fighting between themselves. Every victory gets them VPs. If we just sit back and wait for them to come to us we may lose this thing. We may want to start a limited war while we wait for the real fireworks to begin.

How about a campaign along the northern coast of Africa? The front would be small, and we can fish for VPs. Maybe even gain a few cities to reduce would maintance costs.
