RBC13H - Middle Ages - Angry Abbasids (Demigod)

Eeep! I hope we can get our act together soon, guys. I would hate to be the last RBC13 game to finish and have everyone tapping their feet impatiently...

Smegg!

Ok IE jsut lost my write-up for me. I'll give a quick summary so that I can post the save. I'll do the complete write up later if no-one posts their turns by the time I get back home.

The turns where pretty uniform. Built infrastructure and horses in our core and major cities. Settled as many sites as possible. Fixed our Northern borders and built temples and barracks -rushing some.

Of note:

The Byzantine pulled all their forces to the West... away from us, so on turn 8 I traded tehm Spices for 7gpt and 80g. Which was the only deal I could find that I felt was worthwhile as the Turks had the only usable tech (Early Siege) in monopoly from turn 2.

There are now a couple of settler pairs trudging through our lands towards the remaining Southern edge sites. We can get these sites if we want them (1 is SE of Alexandria, 1 is on the Desert border south of jerusalem, I think there is technically one on the southern gold and then there is one technically East of Samara although our temple expansion should take care of that).

Jihad is due in ca 20, our cash-flow is excellent and if we could get smithing we'd be jumping for joy...

Mmmm and we are at war with Burgundy as they got cheeky and demanded cash on the last turn. They need to be well :hammer:

Ok, I leave it here as I have to run, but I'll post the full report in about 4-5 hours.

The Save

Thanks, Kabuki! Sorry about your headache! :(

Burgundy shouldn't be a big worry at this point, but we should leave a few horses in the Jerusalem area in zone coverage. We should try to save up for a steal into the Viking tech tree as a priority....save all our gold (no more worker purchases).
We should also start a pre-build for Domesday Book or Tapestry wonders, both of which are good, but Tapestry (Sun Tsu) would probably be slightly better (or both!) :D

Rubberjello
Yom - UP
Sir Bugsy - Possibly Up (Depending upon Yom's schedule?)
Kabuki - Just played (out of turn)
Deceased Horse

Yom - if your schedule is still too busy, let us know as soon as possible, OK?

Yom, I can play this in my AM if you can't. I'll be able to turn in a few hours.

In the year of those Christian Infidels, may Allah smite them down, 1017 the not so glorious Kabuki the second. Son of the somewhat noted, although dull leader Kabuki the First makes one of the less brilliant political moves of the new millennia. Seeing as the two contender for the Caliphate, Sir Bugsy and Yom, both were out for the count with the "real life" illness and in a serious "time crunch" he decided it was time to step from the shadows and into the limelight. Unfortunately for the Abbasids this was, as previously mentioned not a stellar move, Kabuki the second realized to his chagrin that his fiancée’s birthday was happening... ok so the 17 hour time difference does allow for some interesting excuses and thus was hijacked by the "real life" disease himself. Fortunately a nasty headache cleared the schedule for him the following day.

After thirty years of rather undistinguished leadership he decided to publish his memoirs, the publisher promptly lost the only extant copy of the completed work, so they decided to release the pamphlet version. IT of course is known to you as it was handed out to all citizens of the Caliphate. Here however is the exclusive, final copy of the masterpiece: "Ruling the somewhat grumpy Abbasids" by Kabuki II, former Caliph, now goat breeder.

-----------------------
In taking over the Caliphate Kabuki the Second eyed numerous opportunities. First the mean-spirited Byzantines were looking particularly frisky on the borders, and led by the ever beautiful Theodora there seemed to be some good opportunities for establishing some mmm... lasting relations. Unfortunately it seems like Osman is competing for her favours as well. In considering this he also realized that his bethroed might not appreciate these sentiments, nor the potential royal houseguest, so he decided to leave the "acquisition" of Theodora for someone else. Elsewhere there was little to note, the Danish don't even know how to build castles or bridges [and as this book goes to print still are clueless - ed.]. The Bulgars are the second richest empire, after ourselves, but there seems to be no safe means of trading with them [it was sorely tempting, but the trade-route would have been cut before the final shipment and in the end a good decision was made here -ed.].

After taking stock of the international situation the new Caliph turns to the domestic. It all looks good, except the defences look like so much cotton wool (and that's counting the fact that the Caliphate has no clue what this wool it) or papyrus, barbarians threaten the fringes of the empire and at the Northern borders infidel culture is being manifested in the youth. Ok, so we don't mind if the girls start imitating Theodora, but when they start wearing welcome the Byzantine settlers buttons it is going too far. New Damascus is switched to a temple so that we may inoculate our youth against these evil influences. A temple is rushed in New Jerusalem, a pity it is nothing like the one in the real Jerusalem, but it will suffice. The barracks in Hattin receive some government grants and will complete sooner, but not immediately. Also as there is a significant lack of pioneers we order up a new pioneer at Acre instead of the previously planned barracks.

As he passes out his last orders for the year 1017 the Caliph notes that the Byzantines are backing off from the borders. All the Byzantine troops seem to pull west, and all their settlers pull out and follow the northern borders eastwards.

The year is 1020 as the infidels recon it, or more properly the 3rd day of the Holy month of Ramadhaan 410 After Hijri.

The Caliph is pleased to note that Basra completers a worker and that New Jerusalem completes its temple. Another worker and a barracks are ordered.

Some barbarians to the south have are slaughtered by our swordsmen. The Caliph is pleased with the loot.

On the grander scale, Theodora continues her withdrawal towards the west. The Caliph is most pleased that his charms are working on the lovely lady. The fact that the settlers are continuing east has not escaped the sharp eyes of the Caliph, and if they intrude, he thinks that we shall find out if all Byzantine women look like their lovely leader. For this thought a rolling pin is conveniently smashed into his head and he is sent to milk the goats.

When the Caliph is finally let out from the goat shed it is the 6th of Shawwal in the year 413 After the Hijri (also known as 1023 to the infidel scum!).

His first orders are to order New Antioch founded and Damascus to build a temple after they completed a wonderful troop of horsemen. New Antioch is asked to produce a temple so that the the young can be told how strong and powerful the realm is (at which point the military advisor falls over laughing helplessly in panic - he is quietly taken out back and executed).

The foreign advisor returns with a worrisome report: The Turks have discovered how to toss rocks through the air and smash our beautiful city walls! He is sent immediately to discuss the terms of acquiring this wondrous technology, but even offering Osman a free reign at courting Theodora was not enough. He does not seem to fear the Caliph's competition.

Towards the end of the year the Byzantines are so frightened by our Ansar warriors on their great black steeds that they kick them out, and finally after a very long journey they return home. When the Caliph realized that after several hundred years of travel these rough warriors were not quite the same polished and shining example of the Abbasid warrior heritage he decided to send his new military advisor to dole out the medals. Bearded, flee infested savages, although fine in the field... are best left in the field.

On the ninth of Thwal-Qi`ah 416 A.H. (1026) the Caliph again managed to leave home to issue some orders (although rather than the goat house this time the problem was getting the silk stockings untied with only his right foot free (don't ask).

The Caliph is again pleased to see that all the empire needs is a pert time guiding hand as Antioch and Tyre parade their new troops of horses through the capital. Also Aleppo and Acra produce new pioneers which are sorely needed in on the Eastern plain. New orders are given and Antioch, Aleppo and Acre are to produce more of these hardy pioneers while Tyre, on the border will produce another troop of horsemen to keep the Byzantine troops at bay.

The international scene offers little of interest although the Fatimids have some Cordovan slaves for sale. The thought of some civilized slaves for once is appealing, but thinking of the last time slaves were mentioned and the need to acquire the stone tossing technology from the Turks the Caliph wisely passes on the offer.

The year of 419 A.H on the 13th day Thwal-Hijjah the Caliph is let out as the sufi's at the local YWMA noted that it was not a good day to keep husbands or significant others in the house, they would be prone to cause or be inflicted with household injuries. Happily and quite content the Caliph again sets off to deal with the state of the Abbasid nation.

Alexandria turned out a beautiful library, which will nicely compliment the other libraries that will be built, but as of the moment all the education in the world does not seem to be producing much information into this idea of a Jihad (
someone mentioned that it might have something to do with Burgundy cattle-patties but the wise men just looked at them oddly and went back to reading Plato). Since scientific research does not seem to be going very quickly and horse do move fast Alexandria is ordered to produce a troop of horsemen. Sidon and Medina produce more hardy pioneers and are ordered to produce a religious and a military indoctrination centre respectively.

In military matters one of our troops of veteran swordsmen get severely injured while working on a barbarian infestation, they will have to rest for some time before they can clean out the barbarian camp.

The international scene is a real snooze and the Caliph enjoys the comforts of home life, a good glass of camel's milk, some pastries and a happy fiancée.

The 15th of Muharram in the year of 423 A.H (the infidels know it as 1032 AD) rolls around and the Caliph's gentle guiding hands are again required at the helm of the Abbasid camel.

Antioch and Damascus seem to have produced pioneers and are ordered to produce Libraries so that once we understand this Jihad we can more quickly acquire the means of understanding the idea of Assassination or even the ways of the Vikings. Hattin produces its barracks and are ordered to turn out a battalion of staunch spearmen to defend our Northern border.

Samaria is unhappy at the southern edge and is given the honour of housing our scientists for the next 45 years to make them happier and content until we can ship them some spices, dyes and copies of the Byzantine's ladies in Burqua's special edition.

As our settlers arrive at their destinations New Baghdad and New Tyre are founded, both requiring a religious indoctrination centre before anything else.

In the first bad news of his reign the vicious southern barbarians wipe out a troop of careless horsemen to a man. It was a sad, sad day and a formal hour of mourning was ordered. This was followed up with orders to a nearby troop of veteran (and much more careful) horsemen who retaliate and on Wednesday the 18 Safar 426 A.H (Jan 1st 1035) wipe out the Barbarian camp, looting the site and sending 25 units of gold to our coffers. All that is left of the sorry tribe is a horribly wounded warrior who will die as soon as we can stop the men looting the camp.

In other news Baghdad produces a settler and is ordered to produce another.

The Caliph sleeps well knowing that barbarians are being slaughtered.

During the month of Raby`al-awal 429 A.H the Caliph's attention is again needed as Tyre produces another horse. As he realizes the messenger from Tyre can barely even read the Koran he orders that even Tyre, right on the border needs to build a library. The knowledge of the Koran and the greatness of the Abbasids must reach every corner of the empire. That and it would be nice to be able to get some laws in place so that the corruption in Alexandria can be dealt with.

To stiffen the borders and to prevent the evil influences of the latest issue of Byzantine ladies (damn that wench's propaganda is good) temples are rushed in Samara and New Baghdad... ok, the temple in Samara was really to prevent the Turks and Byzantines from settling on some fertile grasslands that are legitimately ours.

Theodora, of course, after distracting our soldiers with that same issue of her latest propaganda leaflet, builds a city on the iron source to our East. The city may grow in size, but it is a pretty poor excuse for a settlement, although if we do have to fight our illustrious leaders may very well find that it will have a supply of slaves.

:splat:

Being dragged home by ones ear is never a pleasant experience, and the required house arrest ended only because the boss realized that the Empire actually required some attention. In the month Raby`al-thaany 432 A.H. (1041) Samara produces its ordered temple, as does New Baghdad. They are both ordered to build barracks. In addition to the temples New Sidon is founded on the Eastern plains and ordered to produce pioneers.

In good news the Sinai barbarians are finally slaughtered by our hardy swordsmen and 25 units of gold are shipped home. The boss is pleased.

In a rare stoke of luck the international market revealed an excellent deal and spices are sent to Theodora for 7gpt and 80g. A very fair price and along an unthreatened trade route. Hopefully this will keep Osman out of her bed...

The month of Jumaada al-awal 435 A.H. [1044 ed.] brings some good news as Jerusalem produces a beautiful library and starts training a troop of horsemen. Alexandria finishes a troop of horsemen and start on a brave settler while Gaza, under the leadership of a retired Caliph finishes a pioneer and starts on a worker.

In the rough-and-tumble world of high politics Burgundy decides that it has had enough of our insults regarding them and their cattle and demands reparation for the insults. After talking to the wise men and hearing the evidence supporting the allegations regarding the Burgundians and their cattle (don't even talk about the Celts and their sheep, you do not want to know) the Caliph decides the that it is time to show these puny westerners that the Abbasids can go from being merely grumpy and insulting to Angry. Thus the Caliph in a rare show of spine tells the Burgundians to shove it. Being Christian and not understanding civilized language we sent them some simple cartoons to explain the nature of our response. Lothar was not amused and declared war. The sum he asked for was 53 units of gold, scarcely a years surplus, but the Abbasids are angry, not complacent and do not take kindly to uppity barbarians, or so the Caliph says...

After those amusing, but tiresome dealings with the Burgundians all the Caliph does is to found New Mosul in the month of Rajab 438 A.H. [1047 ed.]. He then decides it is time for him to step down and go home to the goats. The ruling of Angry Abbasids is different from ruling merely grumpy Abbasids, and is something for the younger generation to do. He steps down, leaving all international negotiations to the next Caliph.

End of Part 1

-----

Notes: All builds are generally vetoable, there is nothing particularly critical anywhere. Our "coast" and core are shaping ups in terms of military and can put out a horse in 3-4 turns. Our economy is good, but we could actually do with the cities mentioned in the previous post, even if we don't ever get them above 1 as they will give some economic relief to our overburdened unit support. Growing our cities is also key for similar reasons.

Our centre needs heavy improvement, although I think our coast is probably more critical as those cities will be doing most of the production for the next 2-3 player turns in any case.

In terms of tech we are looking for a 2-fer involving Early Siege and the Turks. However everyone else (except the Byz and Bulgars) are dirt poor and probably storming up respective trees. I think we are seeing a significant drawback for not taking an alternate route early here as we are stuck doing self research on an expensive tech when we could be playing a trading game. No critique intended, but I think it is an interesting observation especially considering T-Hawks post in the Middle ages thread.

Part of the reason I didn't cave to the Burgundians was that we are the Angry Abbasids and not the whimpering and cowardly Abbasids and secondly, with our expansion almost done, an elite unit in our capital and enough counter forces I actually would like to see a couple of boats on our shores. At least we can promote some more units to elite that way. The active trade with the Byzantine (and we could ship them our iron if we feel really brave) protects our flank somewhat so it shouldn't put us at too much risk. Oh, and if they bring in the Danes we can destroy their city next to Alexandria.

I hope you enjoyed my tale of the timid Caliph, and it exorcized my headache to some degree so it's all good all around... now on to the Terror of the high seas, the Norwegians!

As a side note I used the following website for dating conversions: http://www.rabiah.com/convert/convert.php3

Ok, since I just spent the last hour or so writing this one, I missed your cross-posts.

I think stealing should be priority one, excellent call RJ. I didn't actually buy workers during my turn, I felt 90 (slaves) or 130 (natives) was too much vs. the possibility of a tech. I unfortunately didn't think of stealing or I would have trimmed back on my rushing as well.

For prebuilds, Jerusalem, Antioch and Damascus are all good. Although I think Jerusalem and Damascus are best. Not much to start prebuilds with, although the Palace will work nicely in Damascus. I was trying to figure out a good timing to start them, but with the need for sooner or later to do self-research we need the libraries. The culture won't hurt Antioch either. Interestingly I think we may be the only civ with a real use for the doomsday book... beware that you need to start pre-builds for courthouses if you want it quickly though. Starting Libraries in Semi-corrupt areas will probably work very effectively for this.

Now I do need to get on with spanking some Danes, they gosh darn well deserve it for making us face the Spanish in the Euro qualifiers... not that the team we had was any good, but the principle still holds.

Great write up Kabuki! I will have to plagiarize... at least some of your writing style in my next turn. I love the Byzantine Ladies Magazine and the YWMA :lol:

If you're taking it, then I'll be able to play sometime Saturday Night.

OK then, I've got the game. I'll post in about 15 hours

Pre-flight – 1047 AD (438 AH) – We’re at war with Burgundy. I wonder if he knows I was the one who declared war on him in RBC13J. :hmm:

If we are going to steal a tech, we first need to have an embassy. Who would have the hardest time waging war with us? Sweden? Denmark has a nearby city we could conquer. Norway? We are weak to all of them. Decide Denmark will be our mark. Plus they are the cheapest embassy at 84G. So I build an embassy in Hedeby. Pop 6, all happy faces. They have a barracks, temple, market, and harbor. They are building a berserk, due in 3. Production is: 10spt, 17 fpt (5 extra), and 19gpt. They are running 40% science, 60% to treasury. They have a garrison of 4 spears, 2 zerks and a king. The only thing that is hooked up is horses.

Immediately stealing a tech will cost 658G. .. not a bad price. I only have 664G right now. I’d like to have a bit more in the bank before potentially going to war.

MM the cities a wee bit. Send the lovely ladies off to the YWMA, so we can look at the Byzantine Harlot’s propaganda. No wonder we are having difficulty keeping our young men happy when they see things like that :eek:

After much study, I finally hit enter.

IBT – The Poles come demanding 52G. :hmm: We are angry. We are Abbasids! Shall we cower before these heathen scum! The military dude says we are weak compared to these guys. So they will declare, but they are far away! So following the example of the Great Kabuki, we tell Casmir exactly where he can place his demand of tribute! No war. *wipes beads of sweat off forehead*

The Byzantines have several settler pairs strolling through our lands. Some of our men drool after their women. This is going to have to stop.
Basra: Worker=> Temple
The Turks are building the Tapestry.

1. 1050 AD – 441 AH – Decide we need to try something other than an immediate steal. 987G for a careful steal. I just don’t have a lot of larceny in my heart. Go back and read what the Koran says about stealing from unbelievers. Get out my prayer rug and say an extra set of prayers. :worship:

IBT – Jerusalem: Horse=> Horse
Damascus: Library=> sword
Baghdad: Settler=> Settler

2. 444 AH – The Byzantine settlers are temptresses!! They wear their burkas which barely cover their feet! Our ambassador in Denmark, explain a Scandinavian habit of bathing in the sea, wearing nothing but a loincloth….both sexes….together….. :eek: We must wipe these heathens from Allah’s world!

IBT – The Magyars rudely enter our palace without knocking. Their emissary, who looks a lot like Julius Caesar, demands 59G from us. I start pulling at my beard. The audacity of these infidels! We are the angry Abbasids!! Off with his head! Send it back in this nice gift wrapped box! No war.

Sidon: Temple=> Horse
Aleppo: worker=>worker
Acre: worker=> worker

3. 1056 AD – 447 AH – Since our last scientist was sent into the fields to work for a living. We hire a new scientist in Aleppo. Two more turns before we can carefully attempt a steal in Denmark. What’s that smell? Something must be rotten in Denmark. (OK, that was really bad :rolleyes: )

The ugly English queen has some slaves she would sell us, but I remember that we need the money for our ambassador in Denmark. I politely tell the infidels to cover her face like a proper maiden should. I also remark that she will probably remain a maiden for a long time.

The Burgundian scum still will not acknowledge our envoy. Here we come in peace in the name of Allah and his prophet Muhammad, and we are sent away. Some day he will pay for this slight. OH, we are at war, send some of your weak soldiers our way so that we may slaughter them!

IBT – The Burgundian Infidels pull the Rus into war with us! More meat to feed to our dogs!
Antioch: Library=> Horse
Alexandria: Settler=> Horse

4. 450 AH – I visit the bejeweled Theodora to see if she would be interested in sharing my bed, errr..sharing an alliance with us against the Rus. She smiles prettily and says I might consider it, but you haven’t even had the decency to establish an embassy with us. :blush:

I visit our foreign minister and arrange to have his head removed from his body for such an oversight. I ask our new foreign minister how much the establishment of an embassy in Constantinople would cost….64 gold pieces. That is more than our entire civilization produces in three years!! It would set our steal attempt back another three years!

“Yes your Bugness, but consider how inexpensive that would be compared to a war with Theodora the Temptress.”

You are right. We spend 64G for an embassy with the Byzantines.

Constantinople is garrisoned with 14 units and three dromons. Production: 14 spt (a dromon due next turn) 2 extra food, pop = 8 happy citizens (grow in 5.) 21 gpt and 30% going towards science, the rest to the treasury. They have wines, dyes, spices, silks, and ivory hooked up., along with tar, stone, and horses. Improvements include: rax, granary, temple, market, duct, colosseum, and harbor.

I return to the lovely Theodora and ask her if she would like to join us in a war against the Kievan Rus. She looks at me with a blank look and says, “Who are the Kievan Rus?” They haven’t even met them! I don’t think that Alexander imposter is going to attack us any time soon. :lol:

We are now in third place in the victory points behind the Bulgars and the Swedes. Since we have that target painted on our chest, victory points shouldn’t be an issue.

IBT – Jerusalem: Horse=> horse
Damascus: sword=> Sword
Hatin: spear=> sword

5. 1062 AD – 453 AH – Watch the Byzantine settler girls dance for us. They complain that some of our troops are in their way and they can’t get closer to where they would like to settle. Ah, I must exercise my troops.

IBT – Tyre: Library=> Horse
New Sidon riots. I hire a scientist there and fire our other scientist.
6. 456 AH – The time has come to let our diplomats in Hedeby bribe a Danish official into providing us with the secrets of Viking knowledge. We send our ambassador an Abbasidian Express Travelers Cheque for 987G. Hopefully that will buy access to the Danish Science Institute. Our agent sends us this message:

Steal_Danes.jpg

We select Norse Tradition. We have 3G to our name, but we are happy. :)

We check with Theodora, and she still hasn’t heard of any Kievan Rus.

The Danes are very nice to us. We sell them Castle Building in exchange for Seafaring and 24G

The Swedes have Smithing. That might have to be our next steal. They want 32 gpt and 27g for it.

Visit Joan in France. Now here is a modest woman! She wears a suit of metal, and uncovers her face only to speak with us. She wears a metal “helmet” normally. While she is an infidel, she is a woman of the book and must be respected.

More to come tomorrow.

Indeed! Both of you had very, very nice writeups! :goodjob:
Very intertaining indeed!
(And a darn good steal, if I may say so!) Woohoo! Now our choice of inital tech research doesn't look too bad. The price of Smithing should drop dramatically as soon as all 4 Viking nations have it. Do they? At any rate, it should be a lot less than a steal would cost us.

You are right RJ. A straight up purchase will be cheaper than a steal. We probably need to start saving our money for upgrading our horses. I imagine the crusades are going to start soon.

Sorry, this took more than the 15 hours I promised. That %$@#&* RL. I'lll have it posted within six hours.

6. 456 AH (con’t) – We get out the prayer mat and give thanks to Allah for him mercy and blessings to the Abbasidian people :worship: We review our cities. Learn you cannot settle in the desert :hmm: I wonder if my program is malfunctioning. It doesn’t say anything about it in the civilopedia. Move the settler to a plains tile.

IBT – These IBTs are starting to take a long time. Refill my coffee and come back.
Mosul: Barracks=> Horse

7. 1068 AD – 459 AH – Found Rubber Basra south east of Jerusalem, in honor of the legendary Caliph. Start Temple.

We visit the lovely Theodora and find that she still hasn’t learned of the Kievan Rus. Her ignorance, is bliss for our people.

IBT – Antioch, Jerusalem: Horse=> horse
Damascus: sword=> Palace (A pre-build for some future wonder.)
Baghdad: settler=> Settler
Samaria: worker=>worker

8. 462 AH – Burgundy is talking to us, but peace isn’t cheap. He says 40G. What a fool this infidel is!
The Rus still won’t talk. They think that Burgundy is still not talking. Bigger fools!

Discuss purchasing Early Siegecraft from Theodora will cost us nearly everything.

IBT – Two of the Byzantine settler pairs start heading north. Our troops are sad to see the dancing girls go with their exposed ankles…Ah, what the imagination will do for a man. :love:
Tyre: horse=>horse
New Sidon: worker=> worker (will need a new scientist now.)

9. 465 AH – Hire a scientist in New Antioch. How long will it take for you to learn these secrets of Jihad that the Koran speaks of? 10 more seasons! Why do I always find imbeciles?

Nothing changes diplomatically.

IBT – Sidon: horse=> horse
Acre: worker=> worker
New Damascus: barracks=> horse
England builds the Holy Roman Empire.

10. 1077 AD – 468 AH – Dream of Theodora :sleep:

After Action Report: There is a settler near Mosul. I was thinking somewhere west of the city.

There is another near the map edge south of Basra. I was thinking of building where he stands.

I think this is the quiet before the storm. Keep building military, because we’re going to need every last one of them before this game is out.

Yeah, I'm up, but like I said before, I can't play until tomorrow evening. So, if someone else wants to get it before then, go ahead.
