RBC6 - Scrappy Sumerians (C3C Demi SG)

That's correct Aggie, although it doesn't matter since we're still in first round. If you're still reading the forums and want to hop in now, please do so with a 'got it', otherwise good luck Gris.

I think it does, as long as we're not the ones paying for tech. Also, this has already happened on Grimjack's turn:

Exchange knowledge of Mystic weeds for knowledge of Alphabet and a grant of 60 gold.

Think of it as a grant from the AI, not for the tech but because they understand how costly it is to employ the best scientists in the world. Civs who don't understand that, and do not contribute to the cause, will not be invited to share in our advanced knowledge.

Well, at least that's my interpretation.

I agree with Griselda's point of view, so here's my report:

IBT: I keep the scientific leader for one more turn, because we will get Masonry very soon. The temple of Sumer is whipped. I do this because I like to see a curragh built, to explore and try and make contact with other tribes.

IT: The Iroquois want us to leave and I do so.

1475 BC (1) – We discover Masonry. The temple in Sumer is ready and next up is a curragh. The scientist of Ur is fired, so we will have a settler ready one turn earlier (in 3 turns). Lux now must go to 20%.

The Hittites give us Writing for Masonry. England gives us The Wheel and 67 gold for Writing :)
The Iroquois and the English have Warrior Code and Polytheism. The Hittites have Warrior Code.
I decide to research Literature next at 80% (in 15).

We have horses within our borders (SW of Lagash [party] ) and others close by (SW of Kish).

I build an embassy in Salamanca for 45 gold. They are 8 turns away from finishing the Pyramids. It also shows us the the Iroquois don't know the Hittites (as expected).

IT: I see an Iroquois settler going south coming towards us. It is now one tile NW of Charis's northernmost red dot.

1450 BC (2) – Lagash finishes a temple and starts barracks. Temple of Kish is whipped. England knows Math.

IT: The Iroquois give us the boot again. The Hittites start the Pyramids.

1425 BC (3) – Kish: temple -> Enkidu warrior. Umma: Enkidu warrior -> worker. I decide to found Bad-tibira on the hill on the SE of the original plan. It starts with an Enkidu.

IT: England invades the Iroquois! :D

1400 BC (4) – Ur: settler -> settler. A vet Enkidu disperses a barb camp. I build an embassy in London for 49 gold. They are two turns from finishing the Oracle. They also don't know the Hittites.

IT: Our horses are hooked up. The Iroquois give us the boot again. A barb horse kills a vet Enkidu :(

1375 BC IT (5) The English finish the Oracle and the Iroquois start the Temple of Artemis.

1350 BC (6) – Sumer: curragh -> curragh.

IT: We simply can't get our Enkidu near the Hittite Empire back :(

1325 BC (7) – The borders of Kish expanded and gems are now within our empire.

IT: We hooked up the wines and Salamanca finishes the Pyramids.

1300 BC (8) – Ur: settler->settler. Umma riots  Settler goes west with an Enkidu. An Enkidu from Kish goes to Ur, but it will arrive only next turn. Lux stays at 20% for the moment.

The Iroquois now know the Hittites.

1275 BC (9) – Umma gets a scientist. This allows me to lower lux to 10%. Science is now 90% (Literature in 4).

IT: Two barb ship approach our curragh :(

1250 BC (10) - Sumer: curragh -> worker. Lagash: barracks->Enkidu. Kish: Enikdu->Enkidu.

Agade founded, starts with a worker. Sumer now also is unhappy, so I put lux back to 20%. I MM-ed the cities to still get us Lit in 3 (80%, - 6gpt).

The new Enkidu from Kish goes to the worker that is under thread of a barb.

The Iroquois now know Map Making, Warrior Code and Polytheism. The English know Mathematics, Warrior Code and Polytheism. The Hittites only know Warrior Code at the moment.
Literature could net us a lot of new techs :)

One settler has arrived on the spot where I intended to build a city.

1250 AD save

Our empire. Horses are founded just SW of Lagash and SE of Agade:

Well done, Aggie

You guys are correct, we can receive cash in a tech trade, but may never put in cash/credit/resources ourself.

I got excited by this line:
"IBT: I keep the scientific leader for one more turn, because we will get Masonry very soon"
but then realized you meant a 'scientist'. (Or was there a SGL?)

Our land situation looks great. If anyone fills in our backland they will easily be captured/razed, so focus on expanding out toward the Iroquois. Do they have horses? If there is any way we could deny horses to them, life will be SO much more pleasant!! In fact, if they have horses hooked up anywhere near our lines, that's the primary target of a pillage party of Endikus, along with their capital.

Good show Aggie.

I was racking my brains for a while, trying to figure out how I missed a scientific leader :)

In the early game, having a scientist giving 3 beakers per turn is simply huge. If you really want to, you will be able to research at equivalent speed of deity AIs. ( Until you are stumped for growth. )
Do not neglect to put up a scientist on the odd turn when growth and production allows.

Grimjack

Well, I don't know that bodes well for our pillaging campaign. It may already be too late. :(

I also suspect they'll be getting uppity before too long.

-Griselda

(0) 1250 BC - Looks good. :) I'm thinking that we have barracks available, so let's not build non-vet Enkidus, especially in towns that already have a defender. Kish to granary. Bad-tibira needs a barracks and temple. The temple looks more pressing with an Iro city just 3 away, so I opt for temple. I give the city the wines tile, to see if that can help us whip part of it.

BT - Two galleys attack our curragh, promoting it to vet.

(1) 1225 BC - Fortify Enkidu on gems worker. Will the nubian warrior attack it on the mountain? The other workers mostly build roads. There's an Iro settler just ahead of our Enkidu to the north. We can't get ahead of it, but we try to pester it.

Found Erech by southern wines, start worker.

Curragh sees barb horsie.

BT - Enkidu on mountain attacked by the warrior (and lives) and a barb horse moves up. Ur settler - Enkidu. Lagash Enkidu - Enkidu.

(2) 1200 BC - Iro settler too far ahead to even be pestered. Enkidu to mountains, where he sees another Iro settler! Send our new settler north, trying to grab that gold spot.

Lit in 1, science must stay at 80%. Lagash needs the wines tile. I have a hard time taking away from a nice city like Lagash to give to a new city like Bad-tibira.

Our Enkidu on the gems is fortified on the mountain, with a barb horse next door. While he's likely to win, he's not that much tougher than the barb. If we lose, we'll lose the Enkidu, the worker, and the road that's almost done. I decide to send Kish's Enkidu up too, although Kish has the risk of being pillaged if we lose. I wonder if they'll still attack two Enkidus on the mountain?

BT - Yup, they'll attack. We win. Literature in, start philosophy. It may be a long shot, but I figure it's worth the risk. It's due in 7. Sumer worker - settler (just sneak one in there, for that last push towards the Iro). Hittites start great lighthouse.

(3) 1175 BC - We are first to literature. England has w code, maps, math, and polytheism. Iro have w code, maps, and poly. Hittites have w code and maps. We can't quite get math for literature. So, literature to England for polytheism and a 22 gold donation. Literature to Hittites for maps and 22 gold. Polytheism to Hittites for warrior code and 5 gold. All AI have horseback riding. Literature to Iro for horseback riding and 10 gold. We're now even with the Hittites and Iroquois, and down by math only to England. Yes, let's try for philosohy!

I have a worker who can hook up the iron. BUT, if I hook up the iron, and we happen to have our golden age, does that mean we won't be able to build any defensive unit before pikemen? I don't want to take the risk. It looks like we'd want to have a lot of Enkidus before we risk attacking with a sword.

By the gems, I send one Enkidu back to Kish, and the other to try and bust the camp. I don't like attacking with the Enkidu, but he isn't that expensive. Also, the camp only has a warrior now, but it does produce horses.

BT - England asks us to move, we had stepped in to see if there was coastline or more land. We agree to move. Iro settle on our gold spot. :( Ur Enkidu - settler. Lagash Enkidu - Enkidu. Umma worker - rax. Hittites start temple of Artemis.

(4) 1150 BC - If the other Iro settler continued past the choke, we could settle there and stop other settlers from getting in. We send the settler that way. Bad-tibira is size two now. It gets the wines back, but it looks to be a bit late. I send "extra" Enkidus towards Bad-tibira. Curragh finds a barb camp north of Agade. I hope they bug that Iro settler.

Our gems are connected. Lux to 10%, science to 90%. We run a scientist at Ur (we need at 10% lux), to bring phil in 5 instead of 6.

BT - Hittites start great library. Iro settle choke.

(5) 1125 BC - Lose Enkidu attacking camp by gems. I should have sent both Enkidus to get the job done.

BT - Barb galley sinks our south curragh.. Lagash Enkidu - horseman (we need *something* offensive, for barbs if not for wars).

(6) 1100 BC - movin'

BT - English start library

(7) 1075 BC - Philosophy due in 2. To fire all specialists, we'd need 40% lux for this turn only. We can turn science down to 70%, run a scientist at Ur and Sumer, and only 20% lux.

BT - Our Curragh has sailed into Iro water, and they ask us to leave. I forgot to march our Enkidu out at the same time. I can get the curragh out this turn, then will move the Enkidu when the curragh goes back in. For now, we agree to leave. Ur settler - Enkidu. Sumer settler - worker. Barb horse by gems.

(8) 1050 BC - Kish worker goes towards Ur, away from the barbs. Science to 70%, philosohpy in 1. No more scientists, as they've become settlers. Ur settler to SW spot. We have two settlers headed to the NE, and I don't think we'll want more than that. Lut can go to 10%.

BT - Philosophy comes in. I think we're first. Select Monarchy, in case it gives you your selection. I'm not sure we want the government, but it's the most expensive one available.

Sadly, we are not offered a free tech. Maybe the AI we haven't met have it?

(9) 1025 BC - Now England has philosophy. I'm 99% sure they didn't have it last turn. Either the tie does not go to the player, or the unmet AI have it. Swap research to code of laws. Science at 90%, due in 10. I hope this is our best bet, since the English have math, to take advantage of any upcoming middle age tech slingshot. If we could have traded philosohy for math, I'd have considered construction or currency, but only the English have math, and they don't need any tech.

We send the curragh back into Iro territory, and the Enkidu too while we're at it.

BT- Barbs pillage gems! Aargh! I didn't actually expect them to do that, sorry. Ur riots, and I scroll ahead to fix the other cities. Agade worker - granary. The Iroquois don't ask us to leave.

(10) 1000 BC - Well, so much for a possible double-rush at Bad-tibira. It's size two, with six turns to growth. It is currently 39 shields from the temple. I should have done my math before trading tiles there.

Iro and Hittites still lack philosophy, but don't have anything interesting to offer for it.

There are still two barb horses in the south, and of course their camp. The horseman was going to be ready this turn, but was delayed by the loss of gems. Since we were between turns, I didn't want to go to F1. I guess we should send that horsie towards the barbs? There's also barbs up to our NE. I have a couple of extra Enkidus, which was all we had at the time.

There's a settler in a potential settling spot on the coast up there, and another settler for another spot, depending on the Iro and the barbs. The south settler is headed towards one of Charis' original red dots- the one on the tundra SW of the capitol.

Sorry about the riot in the capitol. :(

IT- Ur is MMed for growth after the riot, which also drops our time for CoL to 10 turns. Umma is losing its second shield to corruption, so it is switched to the lake, picking up some beakers.

Goals
1) We have way too many tiles without roads being worked. Let's see if I can fix that.
2) Get libraries in all our core. They are cheap and we will get good use out of them.
3) Would also love to get the gems reconnected and the barbs in that region eliminated.

Changes
1) Erech switches to barracks. This is a first ring city with 4 bg in its radius as well as wine. It should not be stuck at size 1 building workers.
2) Temple in Bad-tibira is switched to a library, which is then whipped.

*hit enter*

Iroquois demand we remove our troops from their territory. Barb horse dies at Kish.

975BC (1): Sumer is wasting way too much food. We will need it as a 2 turn worker factory for a long time, so I'm going to fit in a granary. At max shields it will take 9 turns. Since it will not be growing for a while, it can also give up one of its Enkidu. Ur, at size 6, can earn 11spt and 5fpt, which means it can build an Enkidu and then a worker ad nauseum. But before that, both are switched to a library. Found Isin on Charis' southwestern dot. Found Akshak in the north where the settler is.

IT- Iroquois and English are at war. This is good because they'll waste shields on war, but bad because the Mounted Iroquois might just roll over the English.

950BC (2): We get the FP popup. Bad-Tibira Library => Barracks. Whip Library in Kish. Iroquois finally have something interesting to get for Philosophy. Philo and 30 gold buy two Iro workers. Since it is 950BC (no longer seed corn) and not a tech deal (variant rules), I think it is an okay deal. The workers head to Kish to hook up the Gems.

IT- Iro demand troops leave their territory. Nottingham falls to the Iroquois and is razed.

925BC (3): Iroquois now have Monarchy at a monopoly.

IT- Umma riots despite the fact that I went through and checked all the cities last turn and clicked on the center square. I hate it when the governor allows riots. Sorry about that.

900BC (4): Gems road is started.

IT- Barb horsemen finally attack our Enkidu in the north and we kill 9 of them.

875BC (5): Ur Library => Worker. Sack Nubian camp near the gems.

IT- Iroquois offer MA vs. the English and a RoP and I respectfully decline. Our Valiant Curragh is sunk by a barbarian Galley.

850BC (6): Ur begins Enkidu/Worker cycle. Lagash Library => Horseman. Sack Harappan (sp? window switched away before I could see it) camp in the north. Lower science rate with CoL due in 3 and only 1 library due to finish in that time.

825BC (7): Experimenting with an Enkidu and Horseman near the gems, trying to figure out a way to push back the fog with only 1 unit.

800BC (8): Sumer Library => Granary. Iroquois have discovered CoL a turn before us, and I drop the science rate to the minimum.. We should be able to trade it for Math though, which they won't do, being at war with England. Whip Library in Umma and in Erech.

IT- Zulus build Temple of Artemis in Zimbabwe. Mongols build the Great Lighthouse in Karakorum.

775BC (9): Umma and Erech Library => Set on Barracks but very vetoable. Gems are hooked up, so lux tax is dropped to 10%. Trading CoL for Math is insulting to the English (who have it at a monopoly). Hopefully the Iroquois will research it quickly, being the only required tech available. We could then trade for it. The English are offering 210 gold for CoL, but I'd hold off. Research set on Republic, due in 17 turns at the max, but this is also quite vetoable.

IT- Iroquois get the Hanging Gardens and Egypt gets the Statue of Zeus.

750BC (10): Iroquois now have Math, so England will trade it plus 30 gold for CoL. Good job team. :goodjob: Hittites have 82 gold to offer for CoL, but I'll leave that up to Charis.

Conclusion- Pretty uneventful set of turns. I definitely reached goals 2 and 3, but goal 1 will likely be an ongoing struggle. We should have two 2-turn worker factories halfway through Charis' turns, however, so I expect our worker count will rise dramatically.

Notes to Charis et al
1) The only real micromanagement that needs to be watched is in Ur. The governor likes to assign the last citizen to work a forest rather than the roaded plains, costing us 2 base commerce (1 corrupt), 1 beaker. Not a huge deal overall, but just something to think about.
2) Sumer is MMed heavily for shields being at size 7 but will be a 2-turn worker factory after it completes.
3) We may want to crank out a few more settlers to fill in our southern region, before the galley-happy AI does it for us.
4) There is an Iroquois galley in our territory that entered this turn (750BC), but I decided to let you tell him to take a hike. I have the feeling you may be "blessed" to live in interesting times Charis. I trust the 2 horsemen and 3 Enkidu in Bad-tibra will be more than enough army for you. :hammer:
