RBD21 SG - The Extraterrestrials

Xenos..

My old friend tis good to hear of you again. Your guidance is timely, and will serve as a roadmap as I try to lead these poor souls through the Millenium. I've gotten your information and will try to post my diary within the next 24 earth hours.

Rest well my friend we will be needing you again soon.

Lejos..

(In other words I've got it)

(IT) Aah.. Xenos as I read your diary and look things over I see you have left me much work to do. Our chosen ones have a great need to expand, but our settler farm will take 30 time periods to build just one! This must be corrected. Production is in dire need. You have done well we have three groups trained to work on much needed improvements, this will help.

My stars!! We have no treasury and no income, this will indeed be a difficult task. Along with expansion we must have more income. Moons above! We have one wounded warrior to defend 3 cites, must have defenders as well! Times have indeed been rough, we have two groups training now, but will take 9 time periods for the earliest one to finish. Hopefully with city growth that will change soon. Alas our one producing city will complete it's temple next turn, perhaps then things can be improved. Onward we go with our tenac.. I mean fingers crossed.

(1) Excellent, the temple is complete and a warrior will be trained in 2 periods. Evil barbarians approach from the south, I quickly move our workers to cover, I hope they can escape in time. Yes! You have left me a group trained the art of using spears, I'll bring them home to help with our defense, their task is complete we have made contact with other peoples.

(2) Egads, times are indeed bad! Now a mounted barbarian approaches rapidly from the west. Our valiant warrior cannot reach the city in time. Leipzig will be sacked I am scattering the workers, I desperately hope I can save one or two of them.

(3) The Fates were with us Xenos! All workers were saved but the city was sacked 1 group of villagers were killed and 3 gold stolen. They will be avenged! A warrior from Berlin will be in the city in one turn and can defend against any new attacks by these barbarians, what a violent world I can hardly wait until we escape.

(4) At last the cities are minimumly defended, now I must concentrate on getting people trained to expand our city base. The Greeks are rapidly expanding toward us from the west they are but two city radius from those precious gems to our west I must get a settling group trained. I feel we do not have much time until that human Cleo cuts us off to the north the iron and that land area still needs to be claimed. I have started training settlers in Berlin and Leipzig. I hope it will be in time.

(6) Our elite spearmen is exploring to the west....Behold! Another deposit of iron, just one city radius northwest of Leipzig. We must have settlers!! Warrior completes training in Apollo, a settler is ordered. Much expansion to be done. It is heard a people calling themeselves "Russian" have started a strange structure called "Pyramids". Perhaps it is similar to the financial savings plan we had aboard our old ship?

(8) Our Berlin settling group has completed their training, I am sending them to meet with our elite spearman west of Leipzig. This city name is so confusing we must rename it soon to reflect our glorius heritage, the stars.

(12) Xenos, you would be so proud, the blessed city of Apollo was attacked by a barbarian warrior and a mounted barbarian. Our valient warrior was able to fend of both attacks with no damage. Our settler has joined with his spear escort soon the gems will be ours.

(14) Another group of spear carriers has been trained, this time to veteran status by the barracks build in Berlin. We will need escorts for our settling groups in this times of dire
troubles.

(17) A strange human female name Catherine tells us she represents those Russian peoples, and offers to provide communications with a people called "French" for our whole treasury 33 g. I decline and give here 5 g for her trouble. Good news Xenos, the city of Orionus is founded securing access to the gems. The Leipzig settling group have finished training and are in route to iron hill with a warrior escort.

(19) Apollo has complete their settling groups training I am ordering a temple. We must expand our borders to secure the area and await the building of our hidden palace.

(22) Cleo calls us and offers contact with the french for 40g again I decline and give her 5 gold for her trouble. I do not wish to empty our treasury just yet. Checking in with Xman and Cathy we are three technologies behind but both want our entire tresury plus gold per turn to teach these new ways. I fear I must wait but not too long.

(25) Rejoice city of Crabion is founded between the iron and the coast. We have a foot hold to the north. The Leipzig settling group was attacked by barbians but our warrior escort was able to destroy the invader and protect our group. The Greek have a settler in the area also I hope we can get iron hill first.

(26) Xenos, I feel I have failed you, the cursed Greeks founded Knossos next to iron hill one turn before I could get there. I've taken 1 step back with our settling crew. We could settle there and hope our culture could overcome. Or perhaps a better site could be found and we will even the score with those wicked Greeks later. I will leave that decison to the next brother. I went one time period further than was alloted in hopes of securing iron hill may ,you forgive me my friends. Perhaps you or one of our brothers will avenge my hurt later. I leave you with five well defended cites and 60g in the treasury I have neglected the political front in my zest to expand. Perhaps the next leader may look at those areas.
I am tired I must rest, I leave our chosen people to Genojaffa, or perhaps another brother whom is unknown to me now.

PS. I also did not adjust the research level, I wanted to build the treasury just a little. The next leader my want to micromanaging and juggle some workers around.

Here are our chosen ones...

I don't know if I'm in this game or not...

But it we don't get Aluminium and Uranium, we won't be able to build the spaceship, right?

How do we keep the others from not building spaceships, if we can't capture nor raze?

/Happy Varianting (my new hobby)

Lejosonga,

You have done well indeed. Five strong, and *defended* cities. I underestimated the barbarism of these peoples. If we had our spaceship they would all be annihilated, but then, if we had our spaceship we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place. These Greeks are like weeds - at first I thought Alex was a man of culture, but no, he is but a warmonger.

Our 'core' city plan MUST proceed without interference from these humans. As I look at the mental map I got of our new lands, and compare them to our plan for a dozen cities, I find the following:

We have five in great position and need seven more. Four more (NE-gems, NW-in dark past horses, SE-whereWarrior is, SW-iron hill) of Apollo for a perfect ring, two more SW(either mid desert or along coast of fish) and SE(snagging iron) of Leipzig for a perfect ring there. That leaves ONE floater, possibly just NE of Berlin for horses gold and capital proxmity.

What does this mean?? Alex has had NO impact. His chosen location is flawed, too far from Apollo, and we have no need of that site. Our site is directly east of the water, next to the hill.
One day (perhaps with a culture flip, perhaps with war) we *WILL* cease Knossos, and we will disband it. Or... should Alex choose to start the war, we WILL raze it to teach him the folly of his ways. (I loathe such actions, but we will not be stepped on by these people. It has such a bitter long term implication, and one day, Lejos... Athens itself will be ours!)

So yes, go RIGHT AHEAD and found next to the iron, next to the water. Rush a temple there (literally), then a library at first chance. Keep it defended. With his blasted hoplites there will not be an early war of aggression against Greece. I am prone to call the city Hercules. You remeber the constellation Hercules, don't you? It is home to M13, a naked eye globular cluster near Eta Herculis. Would you believe these Greeks have named a myth about it?? Herakles is viewed as one of the very strongest of men. A good name for OUR iron city, no? (And the horses towns should consider the name Pegasus or Andromeda !)

Again, a fine report. I wish our comrade Genojaffa much luck and success! I did not realize he was still alive!! This is joyous news! And I can share good news too - there are indications that Foxnova (is that his name, my memory is weak today) may yet live as well. This too would be welcome news...

Xenocharis

PS -- stepping back out of character. Sure, we could use a fourth, so thanks for joining. I was surprised but delighted to see Garsonga is not just a solid player but a good writer! :D
That will add to the enjoyment here. If we don't get Aluminum or Uranium here, it might be next to one of the foreign capitals, or we might be able to purchase it for 20 years. We will NOT lose the spaceship race, and will stop short of nothing to prevent others from building it. 'Sabotage production' is an espionage activity which is a great tool in the spaceship race. Also, razing is not forbidden, but to be used extremely sparingly, and only if it can't be avoided. In addition, capturing is by no means disallowed, just *holding* on to many cities past our optimal number is. Capturing and returning it post-war, or giving to another civ, is just fine.

PPS - No weed Garsonga, looks like a good turn (well, other than Berlin in revolt on the last turn :P but that's minor). For Berlin we may want to pop settlers (due to Granary) there or snag Colossus, or use that as placeholder for the great library. I wouldn't like settler so much *except* the AI is expanding like a *WEED* right into our area. This must not be allowed, so seven settlers absolutely asap is called for. (In fact, sadly, I would myself change Apollo from temple to settler with both Cleo and Alex this naughty... as I look at Byblos and Knossos) It's easier to fight a defensive war if you settle first and get in trouble, than an offensive war (vs hoplites) if we lose a prime site.

Vulpecula, a being of truth and might shall reign until necessary.

We shall make these humans thrive...

And Charis, I would like you to be the Military Leader in the Democracy Game for Civ3... visit the new Forum.

Sorry... I thought I had posted that you should skip me... so skip me this round. I have little time. Sorry :(

Entry the first. Well, I told them the flux capacitor had had it. We should have got it replaced half a million klicks ago. But did they listen to me? Noooo. After all, I'm just the engineer. What do I know about spaceship maintenance?

Engineer? Hah. More like a janitor, they treated me. Them all so noble from their high-caste bloodlines, I don't think one of them spoke to me all trip. Except when they were giving out orders. "Smiaas, do this. Smiaas, fix that. Smiaas, go and retune my hydro-regulator."

And now we're stuck on this primitive backwater planet. Heh. No more hydro-regulators for them. Now they all want to be my friend. "Smiaas, please help us rebuild the spaceship." Rebuild the spaceship? That'll be the day. I bet they wouldn't even know an ilithium core from a floron valve.

The local ape-creatures do show some promise though. Laughably short life-span, but they take to new ideas well.

0) 1075BC Leipzig put on barracks, will whip settler when finished.

Trade WM+60g+3gpt to Greeks for contact with French, Americans, Persians. If we're buying techs, we want contact with as many Civs as possible to reduce prices.

(We can't trade maps with France or Persia -- is this because they don't yet have mapmaking, and presumably all the Civs we can trade maps with do?)

Trade WM+2gpt to America for writing and horseback riding.

2) 1025BC Iron city founded.

Entry the second. My companions have this game where they've been influencing the ape-creatures to name their settlements after, as they say, 'our heritage in the stars'. It is, I must admit, an amusing pastime. I wonder how many of my companions will get the reference I have chosen.

Trade our world map to Persia for mathematics+6g. Trade WM+3g+1gpt to France for mapmaking.

3) 1000BC Berlin finishes its spearman and starts on a galley. After we have a galley out exploring I plan to put Berlin on wonder build.

5) 950BC Whip a settler from Leipzig. Apollo attacked by barbarians (fortunately our worker there had just finished road-building, and I was able to move him out of the way).

8) 875BC Our galley finds a decent-sized promontory (and elephants) past the horses east of Berlin. Seems like a good spot for one of our cities :)

11) 800BC A barb horseman kills the warrior defender and pillages Leipzig (losing a citizen). Ack!

Two settlers in position to build cities next turn. The western settler may want to move one step SW to be on fresh water (but this would be less of a neat ring around Apollo, and would again be right on top of the Greeks). Eastern settler has both fresh water and coast right where he is :)

Great Lighthouse in Berlin is probably a placeholder (for Library?)

The AI Civs are ahead of us by two techs (code of laws and philosophy).

Diary entry, Captain's log 750 - Personal entry

Dear Lejos... Thank you for passing on the news of Vulpecula's illness. I
hope he is able to recover, it has been so long since any of our species have
seen sickness, but this is an odd planet on which we now dwell. I was surprised
to see that Smiaas was the overseer of recent events in your area. I am glad
that you have confidence in the engineer, but... well... engineers are
engineers for a reason, after all. He makes me a bit nervous after he was
bitten by a monkey in the jungles to the north. I worry he will divulge our
identity to the indigenous peoples here and they'll start calling us "Commie
aliens" or some such ridiculous moniker. He should be watched.

Diary entry, Captain's log 750 - Strategic entry

"The Iron-Clad Nebula? So that is our latest city? The primitives don't understand
the reference, but how could we expect them to?"

I have completed the dotmap which plans the founding of our cities, and enter the
following as an impression...

The city-sites marked 7 and 8 are high priority border towns, where present
settlers are. Site 9 is the high quality ivory and cattle site which Smiaas
spoke of. Site A is a fine river site to complete the Apollo ring.
Site B and C complete the Berlin ring. The former catches a fish, whale
and gold, and fits nicely. The latter will have food problems. C1 fits perfect
by geometry, but has food problems so severe that 'C' is a better choice.
If Cx, then 9x. Site 'X' is a desert wasteland, and is to be filled in last,
if at all. It might be a temporary site until other borders expand and we
switch to our 'collective' form of government. Actually, 'C' almost seems
like such a site. The problem with 9 over 9x is that it must expand before
it can reach the wheat. If temporary, Cy is an option too, river and wheat.

I look forward to input on the matter of 9, C and X. The collective should
agree on these sites before founding them. I somewhat favor C and X as
temporary villages to be disbanded later when borders of other cities are
much enlarged.

Diary entry, Captain's log 750 - Operational entry

So on this shift, Lejos, it looks like we need two more settlers built, for
Sites A and B, as soon as possible, and later two more for 9 and C.
So few cities with which to produce settlers though... it seems Apollo
and after a spearman, Leipzig, will get the nod.

This new chap called Xerces seems mildly annoyed with us. I sell him
our map and he becomes cautious. Something about him bothers me...

730 BC (1) - Betelgeuse founded at site '7'.
710 BC (2) - Aquarius founded at site '8'.

690 BC (3) - Americans start the Pyramids. We start a worker in Leipzig.
670 BC (4) - Americans start the Oracle. What an industrious people!
610 BC (7) - Athens FINISHED the Pyramids, big cascade to Oracle.
Temple whipped in Crabion.

590 BC (8) - Moscow completes the Oracle. (Ruh roh, hope we have a placeholder
left. If no one is on Literature... trouble) We check around, France has
literature, so we switch over. Great Library due in Berlin in 22. Must
hope no big cascade to it.

Far worse... Russia just settled 'A'.
Our settler heads to '9', not wishing to lose that spot. And we contemplate
war with Russia. Drats! Just too early. Too slow a start.

570 BC (9) - French, Greeks, Egypt, Americans, Persians ALL start the
the Great Library. 8-\ Actually, I'm not too worried. We started the
wonder building a looooong time ago, plus some of those are likely fresh
starts. Don't panic and switch to the Lighthouse, which has no use for us.

550 BC (10) - Bad news indeed. Yes, the other countries weren't a threat to
the library, but one we've never heard of just finished it!
In Delhi of India, it is completed. Now we can switch to Colossus or
Lighthouse. I'm thinking the former. In any case, this is a blow.

530 BC (11) - Alex has 1100 gold????? And he's selling communication with
the Babs for 23? Well... we need it. He has the Chinese, Zulu, Japanese,
and Indians also for sale. Actually, our ship just spotted a new border,
and will hit others shortly. With no immediate plans to buy tech,
I pass for now. Before buying next tech though, make sure our list is
complete.

French, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians start the Great Wall.
Interestingly at Ironclad our border changes instantly to take the Iron
Hill! That 1 culture of new temple beats the zero in Knossos.
So Knossos is a no-culture town, ironic.

In the South we disrupt a barb camp for 25, and pave the way for '9'.
(In the marked spot, right on TOP of the western ivory)

510 BC (12) - We finish Colossus. And a good switch - Zimbawbe finished
the Great Lighthouse this turn! Kyoto cascades and finishes the
Great Wall this turn!

End of cascade! No wonders in progress, anywhere (unless Hanging gardens
by an unknown civ)

Berlin has ten shield output and barracks, and is looking to get out
military caught up before it's too late. After a few spears (?) a settler
would work. Ironclad cracks the whip on a library. Aquarius will likely
want to whip a temple in 10 turns. No more whipping at Leipzig. Iron
should be online soon, and when Apollo expands, horses.

Lejos, I seemed to have lost track of time. I must be getting old,
or worried. It is best now I rest and a younger man take over the reigns... Especially if a skirmish is coming. Riga canNOT stand where it is. It must be 'replaced'. We can hope for a flip (alas, no border pressure) or attack NOW for an autoraze, then get peace asap, or wait. A wait means choosing to raze, however.

Xenos, my good friend thanks for the kind words, and the extremely sharp image of "dot Map" That will be useful as I finish our core cities. Those russian folk must go! We will look at our strength and see is it is feasible during these time periods. I will sent you my log in the time allotted.

(Got it!)

Lejosonga

Xenos, worry not about Smiass. He is a good man. After all he did get us out of Stardrive without the ship going nova when that Flux capacitor blew and took out the ilithium core! He will not betray us to these primitives. He is brash at times but definitely reliable.

(IT) First officers log 510, Operation Notes: Our military is weak compared to other nations, we are number 7 in land area and two techs behind other races. Again much work to do. We shall try and get more settling groups trained and increase defense, looks like military pressure against the Russians is out for the moment. We will hope for some Cultural pressure and a flip. If not then :die!: awaits.

(1) Establish embassies with Greece and Russia. I'm trying to find a means to communicate with our fellow travelers.

(2) Spearmen completed in Berlin started another.

(4) Another Spearman completed in Berlin. Settler is completed in Orionus beginning a library.

(5) Janus founded at spot 9 securing the ivory. A spearman is on the way to provide defense.

(6) Another spearman completed in Berlin and send to spot C for defense, settler on the way. Hamy is annoyed and offers us Philosopy for 50 g, I accept he's now cautious.

(7) Arrgh!!! The russians land a settler/spearman southeast of Leipzig, I think they are heading for spot C hope our guy can get there first otherwise it's WAR!! :hammer:

(8) Well, the russians are fortunate, they've bypassed Spot C and heading further west. Iron is connected!! Starting a Swordsman in Berlin ready in 1 turn.

(9) AAHH..!! The evil Russians have turned South directly toward Spot C, our spearman and settler are there. Will it be ours before the Russian scum found their city?

(10) 310 BC. I can't believe it!! The Russians have chosen unwisely, they founded their city one turn before I could found ours! I can no longer use spot C. I moved the settler back one step. There is a swordsman on the way, a spearman standing by and another swordsman will be ready in 2 turns. I SAY WAR!! But I await the decision of my comrades.

Oh Xenos! If only we could have made that capacitor last two more quartazons! We could have coasted in to Betazade. I hear the women there adore men such as us who have mastered their Pscyhe. This wretched planet, these wicked barbarians! How long must I wait?

There is a settling party north of Berlin, they can be used for Spot B. Research is still at 0, Luxs at 1, 266g in the Treasury we are earning 20g per turn.

A sad turn of events Xenos, I retire in shame! How could I let those Russian scum settle in our holy land. Only one city founded. One settler awaiting for Spot B or X, and the one settler standing by Spot C. I can only hope the comrades that follow will have better fortune.

Lejosonga
