I usually prefer turn-based, Europa Universalis for the moment. Although it's not TBS it's still as relaxing as any TBS. RTS is on the other end of the scale, it's more hectic than FPS.

I like both equally.

RTS I like:
Age of Empires 2
Warcraft
Rise of Nations
Starcraft

TBS I like:
Civilization Games
Colonization

Combinations I like:
Medieval: Total War
EU
Vicky
HoI
Lords of the Realm 2

I also really like the city building games:
Zeus
Pharaoh
Emperor
Caesar

I like both equally. I've liked games like Age of Empires III and Company of Heroes but Civilization will always be my favourite!

Depends on what level you want to play them on. Both are fun, but turn based strategy is probably better overall for long term enjoyment. More people can casually or seriously play turn based games for a longer time; civ is an excellent example. Although I didn't play it much, my family also enjoyed Pacific General.

RTS (or FPS) will be the best for competition. Starcraft is by far the best competitive game ever made. But if you get very competitive, you might enjoy the game less- it's no longer just for fun.

Personally, I've really only played Starcraft and Civilization. For anyone that played Starcraft, starcraft also created great mini-games unrelated to the actual game using the game's units. DotA was created based on a starcraft game.

Mixes are also fun. I played Medieval II: Total War for a little bit and that was good.

So- turn based strategy is better overall and for the long term. For me personally, Starcraft is the best game ever made. Starcraft > turn based > other RTS's.

I play both, and I enjoy both. They have different appeals... TBS is more of a tactical/strategic planning, while RTS is quick thinking and resource management.

I prefer the one that tests strategic acumen as opposed to reaction times.

the only real time stratergy i played is the total war series...

else RTS is like playing chess without taking turns...

Also, I haven't bought a good real time strategy game for years. Any suggestions?

If you don't already have them I would recommend C&C Generals and the Zero Hour expansion. They are relatively old releases but I still get a lot of fun out of them even years after. Plus their World Builder tool for modding the games is pretty decent.

I usually prefer TBS, although I play some RTS.
The problem with RTS is that the AI usually just relly on buildings troops faster than you can sending them to war on different front while being able to manage construction at the same time, and the player cannot be everywhere at once.
So it's not really strategy.

In TBS you can actually plan something better. However, I don't like that you have too much control on what happens: attack with unitA, wait for the result, and then attack with unitB if needed. If unitA wins, do something else.

That's why I'm trying to program a game with a different approach.

Each turn, you must give orders to all your units, and you get the result at the end only.

Exemple: in the range attack turn, you have 3 units , 1, 2 and 3. Ennemy has unit A, B, and C, each with a strength of 100.

You may decide that unit 1, 2 and 3 will all fire at unit A. Or that unit 1 and 2 will fire at unit A, and unit 3 at unit C.

And at the end of the turn, it will tell you : Unit 1 killed 60 men, unit 2 killed 45 men, unit 3 killed 32 men.

In you decided to concentrate all your fire on unit A, it is completly destroyed... But unit 1 and 2 would have suffice. However, you can't tell in advance for sure.

Only Turn based I've really ever played is Civ, unless you count Hearts of Iron as turn based (I don't).

Meh, they're both very dull. I prefer TBS to RTS, but FPS to both.

Board games are better anyway :p
