How difficult is to become GM these days? ... I certainly know that it takes a lot of work but... depends on your country? .. or how does it work?

You have to get really good & beat a bunch of other GM's. It's been speculated that anyone with slightly-above average IQ and dedication can become a Master, a GM probably not. The difference between a master & a GM is huge.
