Rebels With a Cause

Update 2: June, 2036

National News Reports

GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO BEREZINO MURDERS. The men of Berezino have been placed into a state of fear as a recent murder spree by an organization tentatively known as “Cell 60” plagues the town. Dozens of men have been killed over the course of the month with the number 60 carved into the bodies when they were found. Most were gunned down in the streets returning from work to their wives and families at home. Some claim that these men were pimps or other criminals, but no evidence exists that would suggest that all of them were. The local city government has requested and received military support in the establishment of armed checkpoints throughout the city in areas frequented by the murderers. The checkpoints have been established and papers must be presented at each location when traveling after curfew.

ARMY DECLARES CHRISTIAN STATE “SEVERELY REDUCED”. Clearing operations were launched in the countryside around the town of Stary Sobor by the Chernarus armed forces. Local commanders spoke to the press following, announcing proudly that over one hundred enemy combatants had been detained or killed in the clearing missions. Priorities were on taking these people alive, as most had been unlawfully conscripted into this rebel force. According to other authority sources, this represents an almost fatal blow to the Christian state, and the army confirms that they anticipate the rest to surrender shortly. Army officials have confirmed that mining of roads around Stary Sobor was undertaken by the Christian State, leading to dozens of civilian deaths and casualties. The local hospital has confirmed that it is overloaded with patients and the local citizenry are hopeful that the current round of fighting will end shortly.

Faction Reports

Brotherhood of the Ten Scorpions
Spoiler :

Efforts in building support among Tatar communities has yielded strong dividends, creating a small base of support across Chernarus in the wake of the Massacre of Pustoshka.

Spy successfully infiltrated into drug lord’s base in Pulkovo, he has full access to security and radios for future attack. He has also been able to detect other opportunities using the local resources.

Turn Stat Changes
Spoiler :

+5% Support in all towns and cities except Pustoshka from sympathy after Massacre of Pustoshka

Opportunity: Our spy in the drug lord’s cartel has found out that the drug lord in Pulkovo has a higher boss in Zeleneogorsk who oversees large-scale operations. We have learned that the drug lord in Pulkovo is secretly a homosexual and this information could lead to us deposing him nonviolently if we turn it over to the high boss in Zeleneogorsk. This would additionally provide us with a decent amount of credits as a paid reward, in addition to the support we’ll gain in Pulkovo, but a loss of support in the city for our cooperation with organized crime that would take place.

Cell 60
Spoiler :

Captain refuses to succumb to blackmail, confesses to wife, and faces consequences. Informs the secret police about our organization and blackmail attempt.

Some of our more enthusiastic members have been incautious with their targets, killing men who turned out to be innocents rather than criminals. This has not played well in the press.

Turn Stat Changes
Spoiler :

+5 Notoriety from escaped captain
-25 Ammunition, +5 Notoriety, -5% Support in Berezino from Berezino murders

Chernarus People’s Army
Spoiler :

Assault on the supply convoy was a complete success, with minor losses. Unfortunately, the convoy was carrying mostly ammunition and the firefight led to quite a few large explosions. We were able to secure the guards’ weapons, plenty of the ammunition, and the fuel from the surviving trucks. The former station clerk has joined our cause openly.

Turn Stat Changes
Spoiler :

-500 Credits from arms purchases
-2 Personnel, +237 Ammunition, +10 Fuel, +5 Notoriety, +20 Assault Rifles from attack on supply convoy

All of the crime lords and leaders were wiped out in the fire set by our boys. Much of the town has fallen to our influence as a result. Local authorities have turned a blind eye to us, appreciating our efforts unofficially.

Vigilante work has toned down as it appears most criminals are keeping a low profile.

Turn Stat Changes

Holy Russian Empire of Chernarus
Spoiler :

Operation to kidnap and ransom the American businessman was a complete success, a large reward was paid by his corporation for his return. Furthermore, interrogating him has led to the discovery of a new opportunity.

Scouts return from Lopatino with an opportunity for striking at the government.

Turn Stat Changes
Spoiler :

-500 Credits from arms purchases
+1,200 Credits from ransom of businessman

Opportunity: Interrogation of the American businessman led to the discovery that American business interests are supporting the president with weapons and money. He inadvertently revealed that a small weapons and munitions depot exists in a warehouse on the outskirts of Vybor. It is protected by a handful of private security forces. Raiding the facility will likely give us more weapons and ammunition, but we may face losses and casualties from the attack.

Opportunity: Since the Pustoshka Massacre, the Tatar population in Lopatino has become increasingly belligerent and hostile to the rest. The rest of the people in the town are anxious and would likely be soothed by a demonstration against the Tatars. The more extreme our action taken, the more support we will receive from the rest of the people. Of course, the more extreme our actions, the worse it will appear internationally, and the more heat we can expect from the government.

Jess’s Angels
Spoiler :

Raid on the illegal encampment was a success, but heavy casualties were suffered by counter-sniper fire. Enemy vehicles and weapons were seized successfully and intact.

Army sweeping operations have led to the uncovering and detainment of over a third of our forces, most of which were unarmed.

Raid attempting to kidnap the local garrison commander failed, resulting in casualties for our forces.

Turn Stat Changes

OOC

I just want to make it clear, it is 100% ok to cooperate and trade with each other. Yes, you’ll want to make sure the shipments are protected, and so forth, especially over long distances, but it is fine to work with each other, there is no penalty beyond your conscience. In fact I am willing to wager that none of you will be able to succeed without at least some cooperation with others. Lastly, every time the government wins a major victory against a rebel faction or wipes one out, ALL factions lose support nationwide.

Next Update will be on Thursday. Get those orders in.

Great update, EQ.

I was hoping my inactivity would get those pesky taskforces off my back.

You still have plenty of people and weapons to survive. You just need to get out of the old operational zone and play it slow for a couple of months. Royalists never give up!

A letter from Jessica:
When I first traveled to Chernarus a few years ago, I was struck by the beauty of its land, the richness of its culture, and, most importantly, the kindness and warmth its people demonstrated towards all. A strong people who have let nothing wear their spirit down, I could not help but be overwhelmed by their courage, even as life in their country grew harder.

How could I stand aside and do nothing when I saw acts immense courage, as well as atrocities to horrible to recount. I put aside my life, poured the grant money I had received into buying and distributing food and medicine to the smaller villages, those where the arms of the government are distant, or painful.

That grant money is gone, and the people of Chernarus endured a bit longer, but now I call on you. Every penny helps, and with every cent comes the thanks and prayers of a people in need.

I, and the Chernarusian people, thank you.

Sincerely,
Jess

Your helicopter Thomas D:

Just a reminder that I intend on doing the update tomorrow. My, doesn't time fly?

It was barely even a hole, much less a trench. The grass in front was too tall, and Leonid could only push a little out of the way with the old rifle’s barrel, just barely able to see the winding road down the hill. It was well enough, he thought, as if he couldn’t see the road very well, than the government troops most likely couldn’t see jack even if they looked up. Looking left up the hill, and then right at the pocket of trees a bit closer to the road’s turn, he was confident that the soldiers wouldn’t see anything coming. He could only catch a glimpse of the next trench to his left, about five metres away, and that was only because the man in the trench kept shifting to check his assault rifle’s magazine.

Why he was sharing his hole with the leader of the CPA, Rushun Zolotov himself, Leonid couldn’t even guess. He had only left Pavlovo with that intense skinny guy less than a week ago, and now here he was, ready to kill Pishchalnikov’s thugs alongside the old ox himself. Leonid nearly jumped out of the hole at a light touch to his shoulder. To Leonid’s embarrassment Rushun noticed his surprise, and the man gave a lopsided grin and patted him on the shoulder, then pointed down the slope. The line of vehicles had risen up from below the hill, and was getting close to the bend that the CPA was set up around in a wide arc, RPG and MG positions anchored on the flanks. Two trucks and two light cars with uncomfortable looking soldiers bouncing around in the hatches, machine guns pointed lazily up into the air. Rushun’s AK tracked the first truck behind the lead car. Leonid swallowed, and then raised his rifle to do the same.

A puff of smoke appeared out of the clump of trees, and a blink later the front car was billowing black smoke, orange flame licking out from the ruined cab. It rolled forward a few more metres before coming to a stop, the truck behind it nearly ramming into its tail. The two dozen rifles cracking and the deep thumping of the HMG snapped Leonid out of his stupor, and he raised his rifle once again and began wildly firing off shots, barely even aiming and having no clue if he was hitting anywhere near his mark.

It surprised him how short it had all lasted. From the first RPG shot to the last volley of MG fire, it couldn’t have taken more than two minutes, tops. The trucks were completely ruined; engines shredded by rifle and MG rounds. The soldiers hadn’t fared any better, most of them fresh faced boys just like Leonid, at least until they had been torn apart in the short fire fight. He had never seen what happened to man when he was shot, and he wouldn’t have minded going back to not knowing.

Follow me, Seryoga. Oh, come on, stop grumbling and just follow me, Bolt. Here. Look at this. No, I didn’t bring you here to stare at a wall. Look at what’s on it. The graffiti. Read. “Angels for Haven, Factory Boys for Chernarus.” How do you like it, man? No, I didn’t write it, stupid. Who? I’ve no idea who. Mate, it’s an orphanage wall. If anyone did this, it’s the orphanage kids. Or some teens from the school across the road. Jeez, why are you so f***ing gloomy today, huh?

Listen, it’s not about this particular wall. It’s not about any wall. This sh*t is in the air, y’know what I mean? People talk about us. Talk about you, man. Some of them are afraid. But anyone in this sh**y little town who has eyes and ears knows what we did. They know that what we do is right, and they don’t want us to stop. I think it’s our chance to become something bigger. Something… I dunno… Something better. We can give these people—No, not hope, mate… Who do you think I am? Politician? Ha, “hope”… We can give them retribution. Against all of this crazy sh*t they live in. You see what I mean?

***

Alright, Zhmyh. I got it. You already had some booze this morning, that’s what I got. Hey, listen, buddy. Listen, calm down, I didn’t mean to be a d*ck to you. Calm down. Calm down, you firestarter.

You’re right. You’re right, you hear me? Calm down, I admit it. We showed our people some retribution near that warehouse. Just a little sneak peek. And now they want more. I’ve been thinking about that. Listen, I think it’s time to get some cops into our business. Hey, shut up and listen to what I say. I’m not talking about bribing anyone. No. But hey, cops are regular people, just like us. They live in this town, their families live here, too. I’m not talking about some high-ranking baboons. I’m talking about real cops, cops cops, y’know what I mean? I know some of them very like what we’re doing. And they’re sick of their bosses who care only about filling their pockets with rubles and dollars.

Here’s what I suggest. Every other Factory Boy knows some district cop, or a traffic cop, or a good, honest detective. We’re their neighbors, hoodies, sometimes in-laws. Let’s start talking to them. Recruiting them into our fraternity. I mean, aren’t we doing what some of them have been dreaming of doing long ago? Dealing with that criminal scum like they have to be dealt with? I know it’s risky. But you know, if somebody starts snitching, we can always remind them that we have guns and we have muscle. And we have eyes and ears, too. We can be brutal to rats if needed, but it’s the last reserve. We gotta get as many cops on our side as possible. Yes, for now only in Drozhino. We don’t need any big service from them. Just some info on their bosses. Some hints on how to deal with local bratva, or what's left of it. Maybe some local detective knows about corruption on our foundry? What if his boss has been keeping him from busting that pig of an owner? Right? All we need is to know that we have friends among the cops, that’s all.

Oh, and one more thing. Drozhino is a nice little slum. I was born and raised here, you know. But I think we’ve grown too big for this little keg. Send half a dozen mates in two groups to scan the area around. Yeah, like they’re tourists. One group can go Kustrik in the north-east, the other one to Windy Mountain in the south. Yeah, just keep an eye on the area from the hilltop, see what kinds of animals live in those forests. Not literally “animals.” Bandits. Criminals. Crazy mother***rs like our lot.

And also, when you meet Nikitos, pass him my congrats on having a boy. Yeah, gotta be a nice looking bastard like Nikita himself. But that’s not the point. Tell him to take a dozen Factory Boys that joined us recently and head to Zelenogorsk. Yeah, like they’re looking for job or something. Just hang around there, get to know the men from the local factories. Maybe talk to truck drivers. Watch some news, see what journalists tell about us. Maybe even go to the underground fight some time. They haven’t been with us on our heist, so nobody should recognize them. Yeah, no risk for now. Just gather all rumors they can get. In a big city everyone knows something, saw something, did something. We gotta expand, man. We gotta get out of this puddle.

Orders summary:
Spoiler :
- Try to use personal network of our members to infiltrate Drozhino police. No risky actions, just probing for info via small talk and persuasion. If some local cops sympathize with us after our vigilante activity, we welcome them and their skills and knowledge. We will make it clear that we just want to make Drozhino a better place, so we want to know as much as possible about local organized crime, corruption, etc. We especially want to know if some cops have any info on local high-ranking officials, police bosses, mafia leaders, and the foundry owner. We’re here not to blackmail. We’re here to bring justice to this town;

- Two groups of three men with carbines each will take a “hiking trip” to the Windy Mountain (11, 03) and Kustryk (10, 04). The purpose is to get to know the countryside better and check the forests for any unusual activities: smugglers, drug labs, illegal trappers, bandits, cultist, terrorists. Each group will have some good cell phones with good connection, and they’re instructed not to engage any opposition and act like regular hikers/hunters/gun enthusiasts;

- A group of ten people with no weapons (besides some basic self-defense tools like knives, brass knuckles, etc.) heads to Zelenogorsk to simply gather info. Their “legend” is that they quit their foundry job in Drozhino and are looking for some down-to-earth job in a bigger city. Look for rumors and opportunities.

We're going to expose the drug lord as a homosexual to his bosses. While this will damage our relationship with the city-dwellers, it creates a contact among the infidel criminal organizations that we can use to our advantage. Their ties among the underworld, and the sub-criminal government filth, can prove incredibly valuable.

Send spies to Sosnovka, Kozlovka, and Bor.

A team will be sent to the area around Pulkovo, to preapre to take advantage of chaos caused by the drug lord's removal. There will likely be a leadership struggle between his lieutenants and/or new arrivals from Zelenogorsk, and they should be prepared to identify and take advantage of opportunities to expand our influence in the town. Twenty men, armed with 17 assault rifles, a heavy machine gun, and a pair of rpgs. Our ultimate goal is to chase out the criminal gang altogether and take over the town for ourselves to serve as a base of operations. While the locals are infidels, they would prefer honest, principled jihadists to corrupt criminals. However, preserving our lack of notoriety at the moment is key and we cannot openly move against the infidel government, so this will likely be accomplished in future turns.

Young Tatar men will be recruited, to join the Brotherhood and gain training to defend their communities.

Update 3: July, 2036

National News Reports

HAZY REPORTS EMERGE FROM PULKOVO GUN BATTLE. Scattered reports have reached international press about a bloody gun battle in the small Chernarusan village of Pulkovo. Allegedly the result of a struggle between members of local organized crime, the bloodbath left dozens dead and many more injured. Emergency services in the region were overwhelmed, and the hospital at Zelenogorsk has reported large numbers of intake since the fighting happened. Several members of the Orthodox church have blamed the deaths on Islamic radicalism and attacks, but no evidence has emerged to support these claims. The government has pledged an investigation, but has stated that it will undertake these efforts through local law enforcement rather than a military taskforce.

SUICIDE BOMBING IN STARY SOBOR. The Christian State of Chernarus is once more in the headlines after claiming credit online for a suicide bombing in Stary Sobor. Dozens were killed or injured in the cowardly attack, as an individual detonated his explosives on a busy street. The military has continued maintaining local checkpoints, claiming that this is a last act of desperation by a floundering organization. The local commandant has stated that the Christian State is well in hand and the current actions by that discredited group are simply the few who were not rounded up in last month’s offensive. Similar responses were given after reports that an American journalist was kidnapped while covering the suicide bombing. Thankfully, the producers of the studio announced that the journalist had simply become lost in the countryside and was quickly rescued by Chernarus’ army scouts.

Faction Reports

Brotherhood of the Ten Scorpions
Spoiler :

Pulkovo crime boss was exposed to his superiors as a homosexual. The superiors presented us with a substantial reward for the information. Attempt to seize power in Pulkovo was reasonably successful, but more violent than hoped as the gangs fought tooth and nail for their holdings. The gang warehouse was raided and their cash seized.

Spies were unable to infiltrate Sosnovka, stating that there appears to be nothing of interest locally.

Spies state that Kozlovka has nothing of interest taking place.

Spies in Bor have found an interesting opportunity for our forces.

Turn Stat Changes
Spoiler :

+500 Credits, +20% Support in Pulkovo, -10% Support on Zelenogorsk from exposing Pulkovo criminal
+5 Notoriety, +600 Credits, -6 Personnel, -185 Ammunition from Pulovo gang war
+2 Personnel from volunteers from Pulkovo

Opportunity: We have recently found out that a group of wealthy American college students are preparing to climb the Windy Mountain, after resting at the inn in Bor. Kidnapping these unguarded students will allow us to either kill or ransom them, providing us with either notoriety or wealth, respectively. On the other hand, such a move is not likely to be very popular in Bor, which depends upon Chernarus’ diminishing tourist trade.

Turn Stat Changes
No Stat Changes

Opportunity: A small group of soldiers from the Zeleneogorsk garrison have come into our area in 0106 as part of a training exercise with live munitions. They are not expecting actual combat or attack, and this could be a prime opportunity for an ambush. They have trucks and weapons of different types which could be useful for our effort. Of course, a direct attack on the government’s armed forces will likely raise our notoriety in exchange for these materials.

Chernarus People’s Army
Spoiler :

Arms gifts in Pavlovo were ignored by local authorities, and some support game. Locals have no further information on possible opportunities.

Scouts to Kamenka report an opportunity may be available in the town.

Scouts to the village of Bor found little information or opportunities in the sleepy hamlet.

Turn Stat Changes
Spoiler :

-10 Ammunition, -10 Carbines, +5% Support in Pavlovo from arms donation
-10 Credits from Kamenka scouting
+50 Credits from production
+1 Personnel from Pavlovo volunteer

Opportunity: Money passed to a dockworker in Kamenka revealed that one of the government’s destroyers will be docking in this port and the sailors provided with shore leave for almost a week. The crew will be minimal and very few guards will be present, presenting us with a prime opportunity to raid the warship. The destroyer will be docked near two smaller corvettes that are permanently stationed in the harbor, and its guns could be turned upon them and then upon the destroyer itself, presenting a devastating blow to the Chernarus fleet and demonstrating our power to the local people. On the other hand, if we simply quietly raid the destroyer for supplies, we could come away with a substantial amount of weapons and ammunition for far less risk, but also less public recognition.

Deadman Cabal
Spoiler :

Locals in Vybor are not interested in the drugs in any large amount, so we have returned with all drugs that we were to hand out. However, we may have found a new opportunity.

Turn Stat Changes
Spoiler :

-500 Credits from gift to Holy Russian Empire of Chernarus
+50 Credits, +20 Drugs from production

Opportunity: Our scouts in Vybor have learned that the town’s criminal activities are all controlled by a single crime lord who dominates the region. He offers protection for visiting tourists and businesses and has a good deal of wealth and power. Unfortunately, he is too well guarded to hit directly, but we have found out the location of one of his warehouses outside of the town. It is guarded, and near a local military checkpoint. On the other hand, whatever is contained in the warehouse would likely be of aid to our plans.

Factory Boys
Spoiler :

While the police in Drozhino have been sympathetic to our cause, they have been unable to part with any useful information or support.

Nothing interesting was found at Windy Mountain

We may have found something of interest at Kustryk.

Our scouts to Zelenogorsk may have also found a new opportunity for us.

Turn Stat Changes
Spoiler :

+10 Personnel from volunteers from Drozhino

Opportunity: While our boys were hiking around Kustryk they found what appears to be an old Soviet-era bunker at the base of the mountain. There are no guards and the bunker doors are clearly shut and sealed, with no apparent activity within. All of the exterior security appears to be defunct and inactive, and there have been no signs of any activity in the past twenty-five years at least. This is likely one of the forgotten Soviet-era nuclear fallback bunkers, and could contain assets and weapons for our use. We would require 100 Ammunition to create enough explosives to blast open the bunker.

Opportunity: The local Orthodox church in Zelenogorsk have been looking for help involving a group known as the Brotherhood of the Ten Scorpions. This Islamic radical group has apparently formed ties with the most powerful crime ring in the city, but the priesthood is scared of their influence. They are looking for help to retaliate against Zelenogorsk’s Tatar population. They have called for any level of effort to remove the Tatars from Zelenogorsk, and providing aid to this cause would provide us with ample support among the rest of the population, depending on the scale of our removal efforts.

Holy Russian Empire of Chernarus
Spoiler :

Scouts in Vybor have discovered a new opportunity.

Turn Stat Changes
Spoiler :

+500 Credits from Deadman Cabal
-100 Credits from arms purchases

Opportunity: Our scouts in Vybor have reported that local security forces at the weapons depot are about to begin a major shift change. Replacement soldiers have been brought in from other places to allow the current guards some leave. There will likely be a two hour window where the weapons depot in Vybor will have only minimal security. A quick strike and raid could allow us to come away with whatever weapons or ammunition we could carry. Of course, the amount we could haul away would greatly depend on the amount of hands we have to carry it or trucks we have to haul it.

Opportunity: Our fervor and faith have won us some new support from the local Orthodox clergy, which has so far stayed neutral in our fight. They have offered a good deal of support in Stary Sobor, in addition to a modest amount of funds from the collection plates if we undertake a task for them. They would like to see the Tatar part of town razed to the ground and the Tatars sent fleeing. Any attacks upon the Tatars would be welcome, but the more damage we do to them, the more the clergy can offer us as a reward. Of course, brazen attacks on the Tatar are more than likely to attract new interest and intervention by the government.
