Reclaiming land

Hi all,

I wish we were able to reclaim land in Civ 2.

That is put an Engineer on a shore tile and change it to plains or grassland.

There has been many examples of one tile you wish was land that would allow you to get four bonus tiles rather than 2 bonuses.

Just a thought.

That would be abusable in many ways, just imagine the German Wehrmacht marching into London without using one single ship, or Russian ships stuck in the Black Sea.

I don't think transforming is a very good idea, but if anything at all, I think being able to build railroad over 1-square channels could work, like the tunnel under the English channel and Öresundsbridge (Swe-Den). I wouldn't need it very much though.:)

On the other hand, The Netherlands could not have expanded much without their reclaiming of the sea though ;)

But I like the railroad idea, an extension of my proposal to have proper bridges ("causeways") over such one square ocean tiles!

But given the scale of the map, that would mean brdging/tunneling hundreds of miles. Some sort of a customisable option for scenarios would be nice though.

Oh, and changing ocean to land is already possible, if you edit the rules. Of course, that does open a can of worms if you start using it wherever you fancy. But if you simply use it for your own SP games that's entirely your own responsibility (and I don't think the AI would use it).

It would be worth trying to see if the comp would even alow your enginiers to do something from a ship. Personaly, I would have the ocean transform to desert or, perhaps, swamp, so it would take even longer to get usefull terrain out of it. Transforming ocean would also alow "navel rest stops" or something like that to reduce your navie's unhappiness problem...

That's a very good idea! I don't know to much about using a water unit for "settleing" but making a second helicopter to use as a settler is something that one could also use to settle new terrain in the late game when it is usualy far away, as well...

@Garfield
I've made "air settlers" many times, and they all work like normal settlers (NOT as fast as engineers, though). Just don't forget to make the irrigation order on ocean make desert (most realistic), or something (NOT transform. Only engineers can do that, if you don't change the engineers).

I actually like the swamp idea better than the desert one. After all, deserts bring to most people's minds (and certainly mine) an image of something very dry. An ocean, on the other hand, is very wet. Going from almost all water to very little does not make a lot of sense.

Swamps, on the other hand, are very wet. Also, the Dutch term polder, meaning land reclaimed from the sea, can be extended (at least in the English language) to mean swamp or marsh (unless I am woefully mistaken).

Still, this is simply a mere technicality, and since everyone has access to their own RULES.TXT, I simply say, "To each his own." ;)

The difference between a swamp and a marsh is the salinity of the water and consequentially the flora that will grow in it.

When you "O" your tundra, it "O"'s into desert, but they don't have cold and warm deserts, so you just have to live with it...

Is salinity how much salt is in the water? If so, which has the salt water: marsh or swamp?

I prefer to make ocean into desert, since I think it's more realistic to get some kind of bare land instead of something that already has a lot of (land) vegetation. It also makes me think "beach".
But feel free to do as you like. The "desert" suggestion is just a suggestion.
