Recommend a science fiction/fantasy film.

I would recommend movies mostly recommended before:
Blade Runner (I always get confused which version I've watched last)
Gattaca
Moon (it's better not to watch the trailer)
Starwars Episode IV+V and VI (if you can stand the Ewoks)
Alien
Children of men
Cypher
A Scanner Darkly (more a kind of drugmovie)
Delicatessen

for fantasy it's quite tough to find good movies not made for children (like Harry Potter or Narnia)
Conan the Barbarian :king:
The Fountain
Big Fish

edit:
I can't recommend Monsters. I have not wasted as much time and money since Bathory

Dark Star is pretty good.

No, it's not pretty good.

It's a must see before you die, the 'Withnail and I' of sci-fi.

And, for those of you who mentioned 'Alien', this is where the idea originated.

What is with some people and their fascination to blurt out spoilers? I have never understood that...

Tron
Soylent Green
Flash Gordon
AI
The Abyss
Aliens
Blade Runner
Escape from New York
Star Trek
Star Trek remake
The Andromeda Strain
Robocop
Fantastic Voyage
Starwar
Cloverfield
2001
2010
12 monkeys
They lives
Forbidden Planet
Zardox
Close encounter of the third kind
Brazil
Metropolis
Akira
Ghost in the shell
Damnation Valley
Phase 4
Mad Max
Planet of the ape (original)

Star Trek remake

Only if you like turning your brain to dead before entering the cinema. Happened to me, got a couple of Gulden Draaks before going in, watched and enjoyed. Woke up the next morning and first thought was, "what kind of rubbish was that?" It was all playing catchphrases from ToS for laughs, had no plot, a villain who was stupider than a 3-day dead fish, and the writer hadn't a clue how to do Spock.

Finally much as I like Pegg, he's no Scotty, not even close.

@Perfection "Buried alive, buried alive" "Khaaan! KHAAAAAN! KHAAAAAAAAN!"

Probably the best bit of hamming I've ever seen.

STAR TREK ii: THE WRATH OF KHAN :smug:

That movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.

The OP says sci-fi / fantasy, but I don't see many fantasy movies so far.

Thus, I must recommend Ladyhawke. A classic of modern film!

Check out any of the "Quatermass" movies, but especially the 2nd one!

lots of plot holes for sure... but its quite entertaining with the latest graphic :D

I've not seen Moon. I was under the impression that it wasn't very science-fictiony, and mostly just a psychological movie. Unlike (say) BladeRunner, which actually explores science fiction themes.

Ah! I totally forgot the BSG miniseries. It's fun!

Well, I scanned the thread and I cant believe no one has yet mentioned The 5th Element. Gary Oldman is simply amazing as Zorg (excuse me....Jean Baptist Emanual Zorg) in that.

And a few more.

Forbidden Planet (robbie the robot debut)
Omega Man (w/Charleton Heston)
Zardoz (w/Sean Connery)
They Live (w/Rowdy Roddy Piper)
The Last Starfighter (w/ Robert Preston using an arcade game as recruiting tool? Awesome).
Heavy Metal (animation w/rock music)
Army of Darkness (this is my boomstick!)
Bubba Ho-Tep (Elvis didnt die, but is now fighting a butt sucking mummy....really)
Destroy All Monsters (or anything Japanese with Godzilla in it actually..campy yes, but fun).
Excaliber (Max Von Sydow as Merlin was awesome).
Krull (terrible acting, but fun...look for Liam Neeson in a minor role early in his career).
The Raven (w/Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff also with a very young Jack Nicholson in one of his first roles).
And since we just mentioned Vincent Price anything in the Dr. Phibes series of movies.

And there are just too, too many to count.

I forgot, Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis. It's cityscapes directly inspired the cityscapes in Blade Runner and it is clear that C-3PO in Starwars drew heavily from the Machine-Man in the art department

This is great, if i watch one a week this will last ages :D

Incidently, i just remembered flash gordon! a film so bad its good, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMEc_MiLmgw flash! aaaaaaaaaaah!

And also, another one that scared me a bit when i saw it many years ago, Saturn 3, science fiction but more of a horror film: http://forums.civfanatics.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=10161566

Edit* just remembered a very funny fight scene from Star Trek featuring Captain Kirk and a big rubber lizard, that was the great thing about Star Trek, it didnt have the best special effects maybe but it had great stories :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1eFdUSnaQM
