Recruiting classical era great people

I've noticed that Classical Era great people start to become unavailable as early as 1,300 BC (IE: the next card to come out of the deck is Medieval era). I was wondering if anyone could lay out that particular mechanic. At what point will recruiting say, Hypatia, reveal some Great Scientist in from the later eras as opposed to classical.

Also, I am playing on Nintendo Switch, if that has any impact.

Much obliged!

To add onto what criZp said, The cost of great people is pretty low at game start. Several AI civs can build, say, a campus+library and accumulate ~60 points around the same time. So when you grab Hypatia, other civs can be very close to grabbing-or have already grabbed- early scientists, and by the next turn you’ll see one of those medieval scientists.

I forget if it applies to the classical eras, but once one GP from an era is recruited I recall the other 2 from that era get a price discount. So in a tight 3 way race they can all get claimed inside of a turn.

I don’t know if it’s still in the game but Gp from eras ahead of the world era also get a cost increase, as I recall. The AI will also resort to buying out a great person if they get close enough, so even looking at the point totals and generation doesn’t mean someone is safe.

Assuming the switch uses the same rules as the PC version, if you've entered the medieval era, no more classical great people will show up when the current one is claimed. It's not the year but the game era.

I'm guessing that the earliest scientists appear as soon as you build the library in a campus. Getting that boost from meeting another civilization for writing could be done by scouting the map and meeting others as soon as possible. You'll boost writing a lot sooner>then you'll get the earliest scientists.
