I really like this site, I've been coming here far longer than I have been posting. I need to voice a little displeasure on the redsharriff tracking methods employed on the main page.

I understand there are costs for hosting a site like this. I'd rather see a donation or something for the community to give, instead of stealing information from the community.

I hate spyware with a passion. Its my computer, and what I place on it or where I go is my business. I don't appreciated anything being put on any of my machines that I do not authorize or want.

For the sake of the community, please look into alternative sources of "maintenance fees". Paypal would be a wonderful choice.

paying would be the end of this wonderful site. No page like this ever made it to a successful "premium" site, so I guess it is the lesser evil.

With what little I know, I believe red sherrif does not reoport individual activity, but only mass statistics for visitors of the site.

From the thread I linked above:

Red Sheriff is a valuable tool that we use to develop statistics for use in Ad sales. We have to have those statistics and have yet to find a better service. It is not intrusive spyware, it does not slow down the site and we have to have it. Until something better comes along we will continue to use it.

Personally I don't think you guys need to worry too much about Red Sheriff, if it just collects info like how long the page took to load, how long you stayed at this site, etc.

The HitBox site stats counter we've been using for more than two years also collects those info. The important thing is it's annonymous and doesn't collect any personal info. I definitely don't see it as spyware, but just as a site stats tool.

If you still worry about your privacy, I recommend getting the Windows Trace Remover program. For one thing, it allows you to decide which cookies to keep and which to delete automatically after each browsing session.

It just angers the heck out of me that people think they can place whatever the hell they want on my computer without my consent. There are other statistical "counters" out there that require no placement of cookies or tracking information. I admin 7 sites that recieve decent traffic and I recieve a pleathra of information such as keywords, links used/visited and time spent with out intruding upon someone else's property/privacy. Saying that it is a stat counter only is BS. Becasue if I come to the main page leaving RS on my computer I am barraged with ads. If I remove it and visit, guess what: no ads.

Its the administrator's right to do what he likes with his site. Now that I know that this is a site that does put this crap on my computer, my visits will be way less frequent. And I hope others follow suit.

I don't understand why people have a hard time understanding the concept of personal property. My computer = mine and mine only.

...it does not slow down the site and we have to have it.
I'd have to disagree there. My old PC and the PCs at school are both running a "console" version of Java that is loaded into memory only when needed, due to the 32mb of ram on the PCs there(and the 64 on my old PC...it's a wonder I could run Civ at all...), meaning loading up the site triggers the loading of the Java console, which took a good 90 seconds. Which was significant in the fifteen minute limit imposed on the public computers.

It just angers the heck out of me that people think they can place whatever the hell they want on my computer without my consent.
Remember you're visiting here voluntarily. Just a question though, does the Terms of Registration mention this? If it did, then by clicking the "I Agree" button meant you agreed for the cookies/trackers to be used on you whenever you visit.

EDIT: Ad-Aware gets rid of them, if you're worried about Cookie Space filling up(i actually had that happen once...)

I didn't argee to any such crap when I first started coming here. And I have no idea what you are talking about. This site is not an official Infogames site. THere are no warning that they would implant spyware, tracking, snooping software of any such devious means when I first came to this site.

Its a low down dirty cheap ass tatic. If you need pubic support, ask for it, I am more than sure the people that visit this site would be more than willing to give give a few bucks here and there to help you along, But no, they choose to use devious spyware tatics to pay the bills.

You minds as well ban me, because after this post, I'm gone. Using spyware on your site is a disgrace to the gamers that come here, and I'm done here. I want nothing more to do with this site.

Please remove me from all emails and post responses. Better yet, just delete me from your system, I want nothing to do with this site anymore.

Have a nice day.

Go to "Tools" in Internet Explorer, then choose 'internet options'. Select the "Security" tab. Now, scroll down until you find the section dealing with 'Active X'. Set all settings under 'Active X' to either "Prompt" or "Disable". On occasion you may have to answer "yes" to the prompt (though you will get prompted all the time) to view some things on the internet, but if spyware programs irritate you as much as you say, that shouldn't be an issue.

True, it's your computer, but you are the one letting the things on it. Like eyrei said, you can change your security settings to not allow certain things be stored on your computer.

If your attitude is that any site that tries to use cookies and such to track your visits to their site, you might as well stop using the interent then because almost every site uses them.

If you do not want them to, you need to change your security settings, otherwise, you are voluntarily letting them do so.

RedSherrif is the reason I got a firewall in the first place. Never regretted since. In a strange way, I am indebted to those "bastards" ;)
