Refusal to end war?

Early on, as Maya I rusked Suleiman with 4 holken (sp?) and creamed him.

Awhile later, I had two civs (catherine, salidin) declare war on me randomly in 400 AD. I would have expected catherine (she's always trouble), not salidin. Anyway, both refused to end the war without me giving them a ridiculous amount of technology, and in salidin's case, a major city. Finally around 1300 salidin agreed to a peace treaty but then somehow declared war the next turn. It was nuts. I didn't have problems fending them off either, I killed army after army, yet they still refused to agree to an equal peace treaty. Not sure why though. In civ 4 regular, if I killed enough of their attackers, they'd give up and even give me a tech or some gold. I looked at the war weariness, and for some reason it wasn't going above 3 for either of them. So for some reason, both enemies were able to continue this war for 1000 years, and then two more declared war on me. I didn't even realize that france had, because the declaration of war never popped up (probably because of lagging), and by then, it was too late.

So what's up with the AI now? Even Monty would give up after 20 or so turns in Civ 4. This is insane. I'm sort of a casual player and up to 'Prince' difficulty now, planning my cities more carefully, etc. Never had this happen before.

Try taking a city. That usually brings the AI to the table a lot quicker than killing their units.

Better yet, burn a capital. Or, if you're a nice person (psh, loser), you can take a city, get peace, then gift the city back for some diplomatic points. You'll have destroyed some buildings in the city and set them back 100 turns, but you don't get the "You razed one of our cities!" negative modifier. If you can do it to a lot of their cities, you'll get a vassal who doesn't hate your guts.
On another note, I haven't seen the AI bring up the Peace Offer for a very very long time. Was this patched out (I'm at Solver's 3.17)? I don't know they want to capitulate until someone else does it for them!

how is it possible that Saladin declared war on u the next turn? I thought he had to wait at least 10 turns?

You are mixing up "peace" and "ceasefire".

Peace can be broken in any time.

Cease fire is 10 turn peace cannot be broken. After that, it converts into peace mode.

War weariness has stronger effect at late era, and it has greater effect on the civilization who declared the war, which are AI's in your case.

You switched them. It's ceasefire that can be broken.

I quit that game, but all I remember was that in score, I was higher than either of them, I think.

Your score has nothing to do with whether the AI will attack you or not. If you go to the demographics screen, you can see how your military (power) compares to every rivals' military, provided you've spent enough espionage points so you can see their demographics. If you can't see demographics, the next tab over will allow you to see what rank your military is altogether; you won't get any specific information about certain opponents, though.

Does it have anything to do with whether the invasion is successful? I mean I'd think it would/should....if they're not getting out of it, and not taking a single city and losing a lot of units, why keep going?

Maybe it's the AP? Because if a vote for war on the infidels passes anyone who participated in that vote automatically declares war even if there's a "cannot declare war!!" thing when you mouse over their name on the score list.

The AI will keep fighting as long as it thinks it has a chance to win. If you start to put some pressure on your opponent (i.e. SoD next to one of his cities) he'll realize that if he continues this war, he's likely to lose more than military units and so will be much more willing to negotiate. Also, the more pressure you put on him the better terms you will get. One time I was at war with a rival and had already taken a few good cities, but didn't think I could finish him off, so I decided to see what he would give me for peace. I had a stack sitting outside one of his cities. I checked what he would give me; it was something like 150 gold and 5 gpt. I decided to attack his city with one unit to get better terms, but that unit lost. Because that one unit died, my opponent would now only trade about 20 gold and 5gpt. Thus, a nation's willingness to negotiate is related to how much pressure you put on them. Remember, a nation will never negotiate if it believes it can beat you. It has so much more to gain by taking your best cities and then making peace.

Yes. I have that problem also. I get into a war then I want to end it not long after it started and the AI leader(s) I am fighting always don't want peace. I have discovered without the AI having a massive defeat(s) or a stalemate with you, the war will be much longer.

I had this problem in one of the Noble games that I played. Peter, Boudica, and Montezuma(always Montezuma) declared war on me and it lasted 1500 years. I ended up quitting the game because I just couldn't get anything done. It was a major standstill, but they never saw the light. I could never get onto their continent because they controlled the seas and constanly sent troops to my cont but they couldn't take any of my cities. I wish I could tell them that while their squandering their military on me Sitting Bull is in the lead and has no eneimes.

I second BurnEmDown's theory - a religious war declared by the AP is the only non-bug way this could happen.

No, it's all about the power graph.

I have commented out the AP in my XML but this can still happen if I don't build enough troops. It makes no difference if you win every battle, the AI will stay at war forever if it is far enough ahead in power.

It's a very difficult cycle to break out of at times, because you are using all of your resources to just stay alive and you can't develop any border cities with your workers. You must build nothing but troops in every city, and sue for peace right after wiping out a big stack.

When this happens, it's a wake-up call that your style of play is not military enough. You must build more troops and keep your power rating up throughout the game.
