My preorder just came in and i'm attempting to install it on steam, has the release date been moved, or did I just get lucky?

It's a pre-load as part of the new patch. The files will be on your pc and you'll be able to browse them, but you won't be able to play BNW. You will have the new intro and new artwork though.

The system will tease you into thinking you can select it by clicking on DLC and selecting it - however, it's de-selected as soon as you exit that menu ;).

What about if I have the disk, does that change anything?
Do any of the old civs get updated?

And if no for the first question, is there any way around it, so that I could play it today?

Well insteam it says I have it installed but whenI start the game, don't get the new intro or artwork and t' not in the game's dlc menu.

Ah, the inanity of release dates.

Thanks, brick and mortar retailers! Appreciate the millstone around our necks, wouldn't know what to do without it.

( I guess I should STFU since I don't have a really good suggestion for other ways of handling B&M people. )

EDIT: ( And I should thank my lucky stars that PC Gaming still has a presence in retail, because that may not last, and when it goes it will severely limit its audience. )

So where can I find the files for BNW to check for new map scripts?

My heart sank when I read this thread title, I do not like being scared.

Moderator Action: -> thread renamed.

Yep. I hate buying downloadable games. Discs and boxes just have a certain sentiment . It's nice to see your game collection on a shelf :)

is anyone actually going to buy this expansion in a box?
That'd be me. My vanilla and G&K boxes look like they could use some company. I don't always buy physical copies of games, but there's enough sentiment involved that I'll buy physical for games I've been really looking forward to.

The place I'm buying it from has got games to me on release day before and I'm hoping they can do it again. I'd love to be able to start the weekend with it.

This. Then again, I usually wait for games to be on a steam sale before I buy 'em.
Civ is just too much fun for that though.

I used to be like this. The music and record collector in me I guess. I have a lot of CDs too. I'm still a collector of vinyl albums because they are awesome and the way they are read through physical grooves is actually worth something. The CDs are... eh. But videogames is the first place where I cut this habit, simply because the packaging got more and more worthless and some games I bought physically turned out to be a useless disk with a code that would download most of the game online on a server anyway. Also, prices of physical copies is prohibitive to someone who buys a lot of games most of the time. But the main reason why I cut this habit is clutter. Once you start moving a lot as a student and a young professional, you really value zen space and not having to carry around a lot of junk. And since the physical aspect of video game has become a real farce with time, the junk status of the physical copies has increased significantly.

A pain of not preordering on steam.

P.S. I preordered from Green Man Gaming and sent me the download instructions when I first preordered it. I assume they'll email me the product activation key the night of release?

Yes. Me.

I don't know why exactly, but I'd much rather have it in a box a day or two after release. I'm weird like that.

I'll never buy another game in a box unless I have to. And I've been buying computer games since 1984.

Same here. The first game I remember buying was Jetpac for the Spectrum in 1983 and I still have it! I think when I had a ZX81 before that I used to type in the games from a magazine. It does seem that when you look at my PC collection on the shelf that I stopped buying games about 3-4 years ago, but the main thing for downloaded software for me is not relying on an aging disc being in the PC that becomes temperamental over time.

Greets fellow old person. Yea, that's my main reason also. I've lost so many disks over the years and built so many computers that downloading the games makes too much sense for me to go back to finding boxes in a retail store. Plus manuals suck these days, it's almost all online/pdf.

I hate Steam, but it has a point. I just wish it wouldn't update and be so prohibitive all the time. It's a very good idea for video game distribution, but, because it is total capitalism, it has a tinge of evil.

But yeah, I wouldn't go back to packaging. I have old CDs and DVDs of games... I hate them. My Test Drive doesn't load anymore. So many issues with them... ever since game companies stopped releasing actual releases... but prereleases with constant updates, only a Steam-like system makes sense.

Meh.

What the hell else would it be?

I don't get people. Capitalism is one of the only systems where cranking out stuff like PC Games is likely. Sure, you'd have some token projects under other systems, but robust AAA gaming would be extremely unlikely without a huge profit motive.

EDIT: I want 0-calorie fried chicken, but I can't have it for the same reason. Only rampant capitalism results in such extreme leisure.
