The official Firaxis position is that no release date has been set. But in truth they have been cheating on that claim. They have told several reporters that it will be winter this year. And if you think about it... gaming coming out "around" winter... hmmm... What's around winter when games usually come out? Oh yeah, Christmas! My best guess is it'll come out in time for christmas.

Can I Kick It?
Everytime this topic comes up I always say the same thing: "Firaxis MUST release before Christmas (black Friday is most likely) or miss out on the hottest selling month of the year and likely lose hundreds of thousands of sales."
And everytime somebody says to me the same thing: "But Firaxis should wait and release a perfect, bug free game."
Do y'all really want me to argue with you about business, sales, and the true spirit of Christmas (money) again?

I sure hope so too! I can't bare to think of the fact that all Americans are playing Civ3, while I'll just have to wait.

I doubt that Firaxis will be able to release in Europe at the same time as they do in America. Considering how crunched they are for time before their Black Friday release, their production facilities will be stretched to the limit to get enough units ready for stores in America. Based on their sales expectations and release time, I don't think that they can produce enough units to sell both America and Europe at the same time without having some stores run out of copies.
Of course, this is all projection. If they end up finishing the game a few weeks early that would give them enough time to manufacture units for overseas sales. Which brings me to another question: Who is the Manufacturer?

I preordered Civ III at Amazon.com. It said the official release date was October 2. I would take that with a grain of salt but at least that is what Amazon.com is telling customers.
Actually I just went back and this is the direct quote from Amazon.com concerning Civilization III.
"This item will be released on October 2, 2001. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives."
So that is what they say at least.

I think it will be released on 2nd October but Firaxis let say that it's x-mas cause when it will be out on 2nd October people will be happier cause of the earlier release than if Firaxis would have directly said it will be out on 2nd October(commercial tactic)
And only northern america will have it on 2nd October
i think the other countries will have it for x-mas or maybe earlier(end november)
Y would Chips n Bits n Amazon say 10/02.

Imagine the thousands of people who already have ordered it...what if it comes in late?
