Religion Expanded [LONG]

Will Shinto still have a place in the future? I'd ask more, but I'm sure most of my questions have been covered or answered as is with whats been discussed.

This is probably not the best place to post this, but seeing the interest here I think it might help. Anyway after waiting a while on code changes(over a year) I am deciding to make a complete remake of my Rapture mod from scratch to make it more attainable for other mods and/or to be made into a comprehensive mod. So if anyone is interested in using the material I have in Rapture and expand on it as a one religion mod to rule them all I am open to suggestions. I started a thread but it can be expanded of course into more. I want to start completely fresh. Here is the thread.

If someone wants to craft things I certainly would be better to stick with the art aspects, but I can try in dabbling in other areas of course.

@Eusebius

I forgot the alpha channels on the gamefonts. Sorry I am sending these up with the alpha channels in them.

I know it's sort of an out-of-the-blue remark, but I find it funny that the Mormonism religion (more of a cult) is almost never mentioned when talking about religions in general.

Possibly because Scientology hogs all the space allotted for Christian cults. I certainly wouldn't play with any mod with Scientology in it compulsorily.

Mormonism would not be bad to add. I began to 2 years or so ago. The only thing is I found it not as important as other Christian denominations that came about in the total history of Christianity I mean. That is the only reason. Too many already religions already there that have not been added. It certainly is very unique. I agree it should be in. Just no one in Civ modding has got past step one really on including denominations in my opinion. It would be good for a later industrial era religion.

I am greatly encouraged by what I have been reading in this link, for I too have had some msigivings about the present Religion aspect of this game. Thanks to all in advance for taking this to the next level.

Some problems have already been expressed, some have not (?). Here are some of my issues:

1) religion spreads inconsistantly. Once a rel spreads to a city I rarely see another one spread to it. Q). Once a rel spreads to a city, will another spread to it too, or only by missionary? If only by missionary, then this is a problem.

2) In most games I always win the rel game, in that my rel will always spread much more quickly than the AI's. I wonder if the AI is good at getting GP Prophets, and creating their own Holy City structure? If not, this is a problem.

3) I'm wondering what the value is in obtaining a later rel? By then all the other rel's have been founded and spread. Mayber later rel's should be more powerful (ie Christ overcomes Judism) etc.

4) AI greatly avoids founding religion's? There doesn't seem to be any urgency for the AI to get one. Ie I rarely see Budism or Christ get founded, and if so its very late in the game. And if so, they can't get it to spread.

5) I rarely see AI missionaries.

6) I rarely see cities with multiple religions.

I have a few suggestions that may be considered:

1) maybe the structure for the Holy City can be built normally by hammers like any other structure (as a Natl Wonder), so that GP Prophet isn't needed.

2) maybe Rel Buildings can produce missionaries just like how Wonders produce GP. A new Progress Bar can be added just above the GP Bar in the City View, lower right corner) so that over time missionaries are automatically produced, just like GP. The benefit is that the AI would automatically create missionaries to spread it's rel. This would create a plethora of reli activity.

3) if #3 is plausible, then maybe the spread of a rel would be a lessor extent of cultural spreading which I really don't understand, and more of missionaries that are automatically produced using a Progress Bar by rel structures adding various points.

4) maybe missionaries can do battle with other missionaries, or root-out another rel's ( maybe a weaker inquistion) pressance in a give city?

5) maybe some/all missionaries would be invisable like spy's. Would allow a missionary to convert a city that is at war with you.

6) maybe GP could be partly produced by regular buildings (ie a Temple produces .5 GP pt, a Fort prod .5 GP general, etc)

These are just some things that have been on my mind for several years. It appears the BTS has taken great quantum leaps, and recently with RoM and AND it has catapulted to a truely reamrkable gaming experience. Now we have arrived at a point where the religious aspect of this game can be taken to a higher level. Thanks to all! Comments will be greatly appreciated.:goodjob:

@mussbu

I agree that all of things listed are questions on the game AI.

As for your suggestions they make a lot of sense.

The one idea I had but seems will not come to light was a new commerce for them to be used. Basically missionaries and inquisition units could act more like spies, but use a new spiritual commerce. I was thinking it would take so much spiritual commerce to perform the missions and at the same time they gain XP for promotions. The promotions then could help reduce the cost on spreading religions or removing religions with the unit that has the promotion. Everything to do with religions could focus around the spiritual commerce. But yes that is a wild idea I suppose. I don't think that is going to happen.

Anyway I just wanted to say your made a lot of good suggestions.

Then what of Wicca? Granted it's a little over 50 years old ( a little older than scientology)

I added Eurebius religion icons to RoM's gamefonts - thansk johny for the templates. :) There was couple pixel mistakes in the templates but since I know how to edit those files, these small issues didn't cause any major delays.

You can grab the new gamefonts from here.

Thanks for your support!

PS. On Wicca--it doesn't have buildings and hasn't influenced the course of civilizations, so I would question whether it has a place in the game.
